I'here is no record of it in the archieves at Washington, and General Sherman, who ordered the attack, ignored it in his official report of the paign and makes no mention of it in his memoirs, writes Cantain . J. Mackey in the New York Advertiser As it was tho most desperate assault made by his troops in that memorable campaign and subjected them to fearful slaughter, throngh a failure duo chiofly to tactical orrors, it eoid hardly have been obliterated from his memory by tho after glovy of his far march from the blue mountains to the blue sea. 1t was reported, however, by General Joseph B, Johnston, who commanded the confederato army opposed to that of General Sherman, The battle was fought on May 1864, and was brought on by o ment on the part of the Fourth corps, commanded by General O, O, !lu\\m‘«l. to turn the vight of the confederales and take theiv position in reversoe. The confederate forces consisted of Cleburne's infantry division nd Wheeler's dismounted cavalry division, They were entrenched along the erest of a low vidge about two miles west of the town of Dallas, Ga. The attacking force comprised f brigades, cach composed of from sov to nine fall regiments, thus aggic the numerical strength of three ordinary divisions. The attack, instead of being made in column aceording to the skil- fully devised plan of the corps com- mander, the brigades moving within casy supporting distance, was a series of detatched assaults, the brigade that opened the battle being unsupported, and each advanced at long intervals after the other was driven back. The brigade of General W. B. Tazen, an id soldic¢r and the trae hero of the battles of Stone River and Mission Ridge, advanced first to the assault. For neavly an hour it battled with a valor and fortitude worthy of its renown, under a fire as tervible as any that sol- diers ever faced. While retreating under ovders, fiving vesolutely as it foll back, the color sergeant of the 124th Ohio, the regiment on its right, com- manded by that typical Amorican officor, Colonel Oliver H. Payne, stepped from the ranks and planted = the colors of the regiment as a rally- ing signal within twenty yards of the confederate lige. As he did so, and before he could remove his hand trom the staff, he was shot dead and the colors fell with him, their folds part ally covering his body. Another soldic of the same regiment then advanced, and as he stooped to lift the colors he 100 was instantly killed. A third rushed forward to save the treasured ensign, and mingled his heart’s blood with that of his devoted comrades. A fourth soldier from the line of the [24th Ohio then advanced at double quick toward the fatal spot. He was a corporal, wearing his sword, but with- out his rifle, and apparently about 20 years of age. He had a tall, lithe figure and his face was handsome despite the powder stains upon it. As he reached the point where the colors lay many o the confederate soldiers called out to him to surrender. He smiled at the summons and taking off his cap with his left hand waved it toward them, and then bent down to grasp the color staff with his vight. Many a deadly bead was drawn upon him by the unerring marks- men, whose rifles were gleaming in the move tain William . Nowell of the Fourth Texas Rilles, in front of whose company the fallen flag lay, cailed out in a clear, metailic voice thut rang along the line: “Don't shoot! For God's sake, mon, let the brave fellow take the colors!” His appeal was heeded and, although the line continued its fire upon the re- tiring union troops, the daving corporal was considerately spared, and bore the blood-dyed Nlag back to the ranks of his regiment [ venture to say military history, lofty chivalry —displayed by both sides on that ceeasion has been illustrated in war only by Awmeri- can soldie With a li nivalric spirit, a few weeks later, the Forty-fivst Ohio infantry, while on picket “duty, RR[LWP\Y ‘I’IME{ GCARD TON & Q| Aviv _Omaha nt student that the as a dil of 1501 813, ~..Chiie ‘Chicagh licazo & Lo B L00als 3| BORLING TON & MO0, RIVER Na | Dop5t 10U and Midyi Sii. Recant Military Dev.ces. gn nations give g employment of “cable,” as the wive called, in rapid marches and for sers vice in tho immediate front whero delays incidental to the insulation of naked wire could not be tolevated. Cable requires no insulation, can be trampled on, run over and laid in watoe without impairing its action. The cables of different nations differ alightly, |u|¥ ave very similar and aredivided into five classos, as follows: Tho *‘ad- vance post,” cable, the “field,” the “light field,” which is the lightest, the “eavaley™ and the “river" cable. he advancs post cable consists of a copper conductor insulated with gutta perehaand covered with cotton, This is wound spivally with eight fine coppor wires, which serve as a return cons he whole is braided with hempand hasa diamoter of .18 of an inch. Within the last few yoars nearly every prominent nation in tho world has oquipped itself with excellent field cable. On account of the great cost of good cable the United States has failed as yet to procure a supply at all coms mensurate with its needs. It would seem, however, as though the new field telephone would prove the most satis- factory instrument yet devised, though thero s still room for improvement, It is probable that the introductjon of the bieyele as a part of the equipment of the signal corps will canse o reorgan- ization of the field-telephone service. As a means of transporting the wire and in- strument the bicycle is unequalled,as the vecl can be so placed on the machine ag not to intecfers with the rider, who car- ries the instrument case slung from his shoulder. With the bicycle but one man is required to lay and operate the line, while without it two men are required, In laying the line the signal-man rides sarcfully or pushes his wheel to avold straining the wire by any choking of the recl. An attachment will soon be ed by which, in taking up a line, is automatically recled up the bieycle proceeds. It is estimate that with a wheel a signal-man can lay four miles per hour, and on a spurt six miles. a Why Soldlers Desert, Were not enlistments so brisk, owing to the hard times, that more good ves eruits offer themselves than the army limit will admit, there might bo more anxiety over the disclosures in regard to desertion, says the New York Sun. Some facts bearing on this subject are contained in the veports of the officers of _ the inspector general’s lelmleonS Colonel Hoyl, in the Department of th Missouri, reports 183 desertions thore for the last fiscal year in place of 146 the year before, heing an increase of about 25 per cent, although there has been & decreaso in- the average enlisted strength. Out of the I83 noted the cause for desertion was unknown in 04 cases, while in 38 it was put down as 1 dissatisfaction,” and in 20 more as “to escape trial and punishment.” The remaining known cases were so miscelluncous as to give little clew to the reason of the increase. Major Vroom, Department of Te. reports an increase of desertions there, and thinks “‘heroic treatment” the rems edy for the evil. Lieutenant Colonel Bacon, Department of the Platte, shows 110 desertions there against 70 last year, being an increase of 38 per cent. He recommends the repeal of the law pros hibiting the enlistment of privates who have served ten yeavs: also the paying of & higher interest than4 per cent on soldiers’ deposits of money with the gov- ernment, and finally, & return to bi- monthiy ggyments. Major Humilton of the Department of the Columbia r«hm\.wm increase in de- sertions from 175 lust year 1o 218 now; That is about 25 p v eent. For 183 ouf of the 218 desertions it was found imi possible to assign any cuuse, Of the whole number 151 deserted in their first year. Henotes the important point that the increase in desertions had wa'nu be fore the passage of the ten years' law. Restlessness and the lack of suitable punishment for desertion scem to him connceted with the extent of the offence. He questions *‘whether prison discipline administered in the army isas cflicacious as that adwinistered in eivil communi- is as, Licutenant Colonel Young, Fourth cavalry, commanding at Jefferson bar- racks, says that most of the desertors at that point are recruits who have en- listed fraudulently and fear trial Colonel Carlton, Bighth cavalry, thinks it would bo well to send recruits at ouce to their regiments, Colonel Burr, Pwenty-fifth infantry, and many other officers think that one trouble is that 100 many people sympathize with and shicld the deserters, us if they were es- caping from tyrannical treatment, Colonel Townsend, Twelfth infantryy has this noteworihy suggestion: Stop the uasoldierly labor and do away with the inequality of service and pay. Buk this work must be done. The quarterinaster wust have his mechanics and laborers, and the adjutant must have clerks. Thiei enlist specially for such duty, glving pay for the work, the men uot enlisted a8 soidiers, but as mechanivs, clerks and la- borers. Lt soldiers b2 soldiers, una if they have to labor, let it be military labor. 1t they handle the pick and shevel, let it be for intrenchments or something in the liue of their profession. If 4 company numbers sixty men on the rolls. there should be sixty men for dvill und paraee, less the si those on guard, When ho comes off guard, there should be uo old-guard fatigue. ‘Ihe ouly futigue work for him should be keeping his premises clean. He should always be for military duty. 1f he enlists to be a soldier, let him a soldier, and nothing but o soldier, Then we shill have contented soldiers, it there be any such. | These are all interesting suggestions, and perhaps they may bear {ruitin sos curing remedies tor the evil of exces- sive desertion. ——— When a good mau prays, every dolar be, hias says amen, :
