New Yok, Nov, 20.—The stock specula- tion hus again settled down into its accus- tomed quiet and orderly procedure. The tariff question, while still an issue in a very important group of the share list, is be- ginning to be regarded with a milder sort of agitation. The street is endeavoring to accept the inevitable with resignation. In many quarters there is & subdued fecling of thankfulness that the situation is no worse. Already there are conjectures as to whether the tarift bill will pass in its pre ent shape, and were it reasonably certain that the senate would accept tho measure even as it stands, the speculative situation would be materiaily strengthened by that assurance. It is the uncertainty t affords Wall strect traders opportunities to manipu- late stocks and to play upon the fears of timid holders of speculative propertie: When the expected event happens its effeet is usually of little force upon share values, having been discounted long before, and in the present instance the probability is that when the new tariff is put into effect the propertics whichare now so badly shaken up by the announcement of its provisions will be found to have adapted themselves to the new order of things without serious injury. At the opening of business today a gen erally firm tone provailed and the nr«‘ quotations were higher than yesterday'$ sules. Failing of any support from the inside Sugar common broke 23¢ per cent an d whe preferred 1 per cent. When the pres- sure to sell was removed the common rallied 1} per cant and the proferred 1 per cent, but the fmprovement was not lasting. On a enewal of the selling move.nent there was a reaction of #ly and 2 per cent respactively, followed by a recovery in the final dealings of 1; per cent on common, the preferred remaining av the bottom figures. Durine the early part of the afternoon a distinetly stronger teeling characterized the dealings and the prices rose 2 per cent, the latter in Tobacco. At the delivery hour there was evidence that dealers were anxious to carry smaller lines of stocks after the holidays and others were taking profits, the result being that prices receded 1y to 177 per cent, with Distilling and General Eleétrie in the lead. Toward the close the fizurcs began to move upward again and the final dealings e firm in tone Compared with* yesterday’s closing the final p y show but shght changes outside of the in trials. Thoseof 1 per cent and more down : Sugar, 23 per cent; Sugar preferred, 145 per cent: To- bacco common, 2 per cent; Distilling, 1% ver cent; and Burlington and Manhattan, 1 per ceat. Advances: Tobacco proferr icago G per cent; N Engiand, 15, per cent preferred, .17 per cent; and Northwestern preferved and Oregon Improvement, 1 per cent, The Post says: hing of a holiday tillness spread over today’s stock market. en in the industrial stocks active manipu- Iation ceased and ther none of Mon- day’s or Tuesday’s wild fluctuations in the prices. But tho strength of the general market was once more plainly manifested, not least by the quick abandonment of one or two efforts by the traders to depress the lovel. Western [ nion stock was the note- wocthy point of strength, but there was some noticeable buying in of shrts in the industrials. Sugar certificates began with & two boint drop, but recovered isiiliing certificates forlowed while Chicago Gas and advanced from the fi Afte avly trading the market lapsed into total inactivity.
