COMMERCIAL AND FINANCI Wheat Opened a Fraction Higher on Light Northwestern Receipts. ON SELLING A DECLINE WAS SCORED Corn Developed Some Firmness at the Btarr, o Sympathy with the Im. provement in Whent, bat soon Weakened. Ciicaco, Nov, 16.—Wheat opened 3¢ higher today on light northwestern receipts, but lost its gain and ¢ more on heavy sell- ing by local operators and the poor export outlook. Corn, oats and provisions were all iu Jine with the wealkness of wheat. Encouraged by light receipts in the north- wost there was a lively demand by traders for December and May wheat atthe opening. T price was evened up a trifle, but ¥ ridge and Leeming appeared as sellers and the decline began, Pardridge’s sales for the day were estimated at over 1,000,000 bu., 260,000 bu, going in one lot on a buying order from New York. The seaboard clearances were comparatively light, there was tittle encouragement in cables and reports said that Russian wheat was being offered at prices that would materially hurt American exports, With all this againstit and but very little bullish news, the market declined after its firsy break, with very few reaction December opened at 62, sold up lge, went down 15¢e, rallied from ke to lye, to then close at 605 c. Corn opened e higher and developed firmncess at the start in sympathy with yrovement in wheat, but soon weak- encd on larger receipts than the estimates, It was helped in its decline by heavy esti- mates for tomorrow’s receipts and the crop reports showing an increase and with wheat rattied down. at the ciose toa point e lower than ye day's close. May opened at 42i4c, sold off Ye, rallied 1ye and then de- clined, with few raliies, to the close at 4015c. Outs opened at 8137c, yesterday's figures, and on offerings by longs and corn’s weak- ness, declined until May touched 3le, vally- fng dic at_the finish, toa close at 8ligc, or ¢ lower than it started. The provision markct was weak ona re- port from the yards of a drop in the price of hogs, and after gaining a little near he opening on a temporary demand, prices went down. New York, Nov. 16.—The departure for Europe of Assistant Treasurer Conrad N. Jordan, accompanied by ex-Secretary of the Navy B. F. Tracy, revived the reports which were current some time ago that the govern- ment was negotiating a $100,000,000 loan in Loudon. Although denied at the subtreas- ury, where it was stated that Mr. Jordan waiis on leave of absence to attend to private business, the incident was used to bull tho market. The prospective bond issue was accepted as tavorable to speculation in values. A covering movement was the re- sult and there was also some buying for the long account, which imparted a strong tone 10 the early dealings. It did not take long, however, for tha street to realize the im- probability of the bond story und then the traders took the other side of the market. Rumors unfavorable to General Electric coming to hand that stock was hammered down 4 per cent. It was first stated that the company’s books have been examined in the interest of a party of stockholders, and had disclosed certain disagreeable facts, and this being denied it was asserted that the stock plodged or a loan was being liqui- dated and that an amalgamation with the Westinghouse company was about to be con- summated on terms more favorable to the latter concern than to General Electric. When the pressure to sell was removed the stock recovered 1 per cent. The general market was.not seciously af- fected by the raid on General Electric, and about 11 o’clock a good many Buying orders were sent in to the board, which had the effect of advancing quotations 1§ to 1% per cent, Manhattan, New Jersey Central, Sugar and Cordage hl“ng most prominent 'in the upward movement. Toward noon the market became quite stagnant, and 1n the absence of buyers prices generally sagged off a fra tion, ana Manhattan dropped 27¢ per cent. There was a fractional recovery about 1i followed quickly by a partial reac- tion, but during the last hour a firmer tone prevailed, accompanied by an improvement ranging to 11§ per cent, a small fraction of which was lost in a few instances in the final sales, but thegeneral market clused firm at an advance on the day of from % to 2 per cent, the latter in Rubber common: 1}¢ per cent’ 1 the preferred and Nashyille, Chat- tanooga ; nera cent in Cordage and Cana- dian Pacific; 115 per cent in Now Jersey Central, ..\lull[ rcent in Cotton Oil, T bacco, Minneapolis &St. Louis preferred and Kanawha & Michigan. Some few shares showed a decline compared with the final sales of yesterday, notably General Electrie, 2% per cent; Manhattan, 1! per cent, and Pittsburg, Cincinnatf, Chicago & St. Louis, 1 per cent. The preferred stock of the Peninsula Car company sold at 58, the last previous sale, made on September 18, having been at 92!, The Post says: When the stock market opened today the buyers were more pressing thun the sellers, and prices advanced. Trivial iucidents may serve for guiding forces in such a market, and some use wus made this morning of the announcement that the United States treasurer at New York would wvisit Europe. This was as. sumed by board room gossip to mean a gov- ernment bond issue, and such a move is looked on as a factor for better prices. Whatover may be thought of this reason- ing, it encouraged numerous speculators to cover shorts, and for an hour or two the market rallied. An attack on General Electric checked this movemeut and at- tracted selling of this particular stock by operators, among whom the word had passed that unfavorable news regarding this com- pany was about to be announced. The sell- g, though for the moment heavy, was any- thing but confident, for every intelligent ob- server knows thut neis miy some day be- come public on this stock which Wall street would take as favorable. At the close the tone was stroog throughout, especially the industrial group. Oue notable advance was that in Louisville, concerning which in- formation now appears to show that the Chesapeake, Ohio & Southwestern purchase was by no means a bad stroke of business, but why, if so, the dotails and purposes stould have beon officially concealed, ns though the Louisville managers were ashumed of it remains o mystery. Truispay, Nov. 16, There was anovher fair run of stock to- day, the, four days’ supply showing an in- crease of 2,500 cattle &nd 5,000 hogs, while sheep receipts have decreased nearly 5,000 head. The cattle market presented no new fea- tures. Offerings were very largely rangers and the few native stecrs here wero not a very desirable lot. Foranything the dressed beef men could use the demand was good and the market firm, while common and inferior stock, @as usual, met with un indifferent demand and sale, although prices were quotably unchanged. faivish 1,406-1b. natives brought 4. westerns and Texans went at anywhere from §2.80 to .55, The movement w tolerably free throughout, and a fair clear- ance soon cffected. There were all of sixty loads of cows on sule, and, while the desirable grades met with a ready sale at good, firm prices, the superabundance of common canning stuft in the yards made tne market lower for the under grades. Prime heifors sold up to &3 ana canners as low as &1.50. For fawr to good butchers' cows prices ruled mostly around 8210 to $250. Calves av from $150 to # were about steady and the same was true of rough stock, sell- Ing v from $1.35 to §3. The stocker and feeder trade was rather dull_acd generally lower. Smooth, fleshy stock was in fuir demand and about steady at from $3 up to £3.60, but the ordinary run of ‘sbuft moved slowly snil largely at from £2.40 to 82 These prices are from 10c to 25¢ lower than 4 week ago.
