S S e COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Despite Bearish Influences Wheat Olosed One-Half Oent Higher, CORN WAS FIRM ON LIGHT RECEIPTS Reporta from 1he Country that Farmers Are Relactant to Sell Their Corii at Cur- ent Prices Wasa Sustain. ing Tnflaence. Cnrcaco, Nov. 15, —~Covering by shorts, re. ports of drouth and lighter northwestorn r¢ cepts favored wheat today. and despite | many bearish influences Decomber closed 34c higher than yesterday. Corn ruled firm on light receipts and small offerings, and oats gained ‘o on corn's firmness, Pro- visions took a reverse courso'to thatof the grain market, notwithstanding the smail re ceipts of hogs. log products were weak pork scored a break of B0c, lard and ribs 1c. Wh opened near yesterday's figures and for the first half hour showed an up- ward tendency. Receipts in the northwest were light and drouth was reported in the winter wheat belt But weaker cables caused a reaction and Bradstreet's re- hort showing A heavy incroase in Jnited Statés stoc! ombined with smaller export clearances, caused a break, and December wheat went to 60J{c. Neur the close covering by shorts caused a reaction, and with moderate buy- ing by Walker and Wren, helped the market to a decided improvement at the close. 1t was said Bryant bought 50,000 bu, of May wheat at 08¢, ana that a lot of wheat was coverea for ths Pardridge & Smith uceount before the close, December cpened at vester- day’s figures, from 60%¢e to 6lc, sold up e, reacted from !je to fge. climbed from ¢ to 3,0 to the close, Corn began firm at yesterday’s prices on light receipts, and some of the heavy local shorts covered freely. Revorts from the country that farmers arve reluctant to sell their corn at current prices also acted as a sustaining influence. Offerings were light. May opened ut 41c, rose i{c, gained dnd lost 3¢ several times, rose %c above the opening, lost it, rallied aud closed av 417%c, }jc above yesterday's clos . Oats foliowed corn in its fluctuations, with very little trade. Harry Scull bought 100,- 000 bu., supposed to be for a short account, ard his he to fivin up the market. May started at $1'5c, where it closed yesterd gained 'ge, lost 'gu, gained from’ i{e to and closed at 817 c. Provisions openied at a slight advance on smaller receipts than exvected, but on free selling by Hately and Roloson and others prices broke badly. STOUKS AND BONDS, Securities Were Dull und Attracted Little Attention Yesterdy. W Youk, Nov. 15.--A duller or less in- teresting duy has not been experienced on the Stock exchange in months than was to- day; i fact, the only activity was among the rumor mongers, whose fecundity was abnormal. And as usual the reports put in circulation were intended to devbreciate values, and though in most cases Speedily denied, served the purpose of the authors to make quick turns on the short side of the account. But in spite of all the efforts of the bear traders to establish a lower range of values in the face of an in- active market, a remarkabvly firm undertone characterized the dealings and in making up the balances for th day a greater number of shares were placed in the column of advances than in the de- crease columns, The reason for this 1s to be found in the timidity of the shors inter- est, which is now disposed to leave its lines long outstandingz and seeks to secure its profits by covering at each moderate decline. The purchases for this account, supple- mentad by new buying, even though In small volume, serve to restore valucs, and as the market in its present smper is more sensi- tive to & purchasing than 1o a selling move- ment it requivesa lighter volume of busi- ness Lo move the market up than to send it down. The bears are not, therefore, doing a very profitable business in the market as it stands and they do not scem to consider tho conditions ripe for a more vigorous and nec- essarily more risky campaign. Iu the early dealings today an attack was made on Manhattan on the strength of a report that to provide funds for neces- sary repairs consolidated bonds held in the company’s treasury would have to be sold: the shares yielded 24 per cent, but speedily recovered all but % per cent or the los only a very small amount of long stock being bought out, all of which was rveadily ab- sorbed. Au_attempt was_made to frighten hoiders of Louisville & Nashville by the circulation of a story allezed to have come from London, to the effect that several of the directors intended to resign. This was denied at the company’s oftice, and a report that the Chesapeake, Ohio & Southywestern deal had been declared off was denied on the authority of Mr. Bel- monv of the Louisvills & Nashville directory. Neither canard had an appreciable effect on the stock. Western Union was sold down 13¢ per cent on a renewal of the reports of decreased earniags, and it was rumored that a combination had been formed to bear the stock. When the pressure to sell was re- newed in the atternoon a recovery of 1 per cent was made. The industmals were raided on private dispatches from Washing- ton suggesting unfavorable tariff changes. Sugar yielded 15¢ per cent, Cotton Oil pre- ferred, 1 por cent, und Cordage preferred, 4 per cent, the latter being unfavorably af- fected by the anticipation of a bad state- ment from the receiver. Union Paclfic hela up well under the heavy decrease in the Oc- tober earaings and actually closed a small fraction above yesterday. ‘The general mar- ket was irregular and unsettled all day, fluctuating frequently betwoen strength and weakness, but in the main making toward better figures, At the closea fairly steady tone prevailed and the active list was gen- erally a fraction higher than at yesterday's closing, while Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis showed an advance of 315 per cent and Minneapolis & Louis 1% per cent. The shares which recorded the heaviest de- clines, not already noted, ave New York Central, Canada Southern, 11 per cent; St. Paul vreferred, 1'; per cent; New Jersey Central, 12¢ per ¢ 5 Michigan Central, 2 per cent, and Green Bay & Winona seconds, subseription per cent. The Post says: Since outside investors are virtually doing nothing in the security market little is left to watch but the move- ment of professional speculators. In this contingent it is clear that only the be- liavers in lowor prices are aggrossively ac- tive. Much of the situation is undoubtediy in their favor, not least of all this apathy of outside buyers. Yet 1t is very no- ticeable that the oporators for the decline are taking wo large chances On the contrary each successive raid against the market is checked as suadenl) n8 it is begun and is followed by a recovery rather indiscriminately distributed among This was the case today when the movement of prices varvied with curious irecgularity, the grangers holding practically firm. while other stocks, notably Sugar certificates, yielded again. The conclusion from the market situation is that speculators are in doubt whether congressional uncertainty, the trade stagnation, the diminished rail- 'viay earnings and the possibility of another commercial fuilure in the year's finaneinl settlements are not offset by the immense advantages conferred by the restored sound mouey. Cattle Trade Weakens Slightly Heavy Recelpts of Poor Stuff, WenNEsDAY, Nov. 15. ceipts for the past three days, as com- pared with the first half of last week, show an increase of about 1,000 cattle and 3,000 hogs, while sheep receipts have fallen off fully 8,500 head. ~ There was little that was new about the general cattle market today. Receipts were somewhat heavier than they have been for the past ten days and the quality of the offerings showed no particular change. The rather liberal offerings produced a weaker fecling, but with a good general demand all desirable beef cattle met with a ready sale at strong prices. Fair to good 1,100 to 1,350-1n, cornfed steers sold at from $4 35 to $.70and fair o choice western rangers readily sold at from $3.40 up 1o #4. Hall- fatted natavs and westerns that were neither good enough for killers nor feeders were in poor demand and sold slowly at shaded prices. Natives of this character weighing ull the way from 900 to 1,800 ibs. soid at from $3.30 to $3.85. There was a good. firm tone to the trade for anything fat fnd & good and reasonubly early clearince was effected. The cow market was very ictive and gen- erally stronger. There were closs to 60 loads on sule, but in addition to the usual active demand from local houses both Morris and Armour of Chicago had buyers in the yards after supplies. Common to prime cows and heifers sold at an extreme range of from £1.50 to §3.75, but 2.156 to ¥ bought most of the fair togood stuff. Calves at from &2 o #4.50 were fully steady and the same was true of rougn stock at from §1.00 to §2.8( The feeder tradepeemed to be lackiug in life and snup, and prices, if anything, were a shade lower, Supplies were excessive, and aside from a few country buyers and sellers the demand was not heavy. Good 10 choice feeders ure quoted at from $3.20 Lo §3.60, fair to good av from £2.75 to #3.10, with in. ferior to fair des at from $2.25 Lo $2.75. Representative sales: DRESSED BEEF.
