ERCIAL AND FINANCIAL s Wheat Lost One Oent on Heavy Increacesin Elevator Stocks, THAT CE-EAL OPENED QUITE STRONG After n Cons g Vric Estimated Ree ~Stocks and rable Drop from the Op: Rencted Laght s for Todny e on onds. Cnrcago, Nov. 14.—Wheat lost 1c today on & heavy increase in northwestern country elevator stocks, ieavy northwestern receipts, an unexpected increase in United States stocks, small export clearances and free selling. Corn was weak, but less radically so than wheat and the loss at the close was from }jc 1o fge. Oats were jc lower und provisions 80¢ off for pork, 15¢ for lard and lower for ribe Whent opened near yesterday's closiog figure, but immediately began to decline. Northwestern receipts continued heavy. The stocks in elevators in Minneapolis, Duluth ana in the interior back of those places were reported to show an aggregute Increase last week of 3,288,000 bu. and this completely offset the reports of smaller farmers’ deliveries, Oporators who have bought on the better feeling of yestorday be- gan to unload and the price continued to go down. The report that Bradstireet's statement will increase the United States stock tomorrow by over 4,000,000 bu. was another dey g factor. Some buying of shorts caused temporary reaction, but it was b sh influence, small exvort clear- ances and discournging cables continuing. The general tendency of the market December opencd where it 1 yesterday, atfrom 017gc to 62¢, sold off lc. gained 14, reacted e, sola up e, lost 'e, went down f¢and rallied %cto the close at Blc. Corn_opened weak at lye below day's close on heavy receipts. After a siderable drop from the opening price there was u reaction on light estimated receipts for tomorrow. The recovery was m tained for a time, but the price finally yielded to the extreme weakness of wheat and closed %c below yesterday's elosiag. Muy opened at 41c. sold off 1jc, lost another Jge, veacted e, lost Yc, rencted S, lost it and closed at from 4034 to 4lc, or from !je to 9c below yvesterd close. Outs opened fairly uctive at yesterday's closing firure, 8lage. but large offerings of long stuff and corn's weakness affected it. and after losing ¢ 1t rallied 'ye to the close at 81'5¢. Provisions opened farly wenk and ex- perienced an rly slight advance, due to smaller heldings=than exvected, but free offerings and corn’s weakness sent it down. istimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat. o, 310 cars ; oats, 162 cars; hogs, 6,000 head. New York, Nov. 14.—The assignment of Thurber-Whyland & Co.. announced today, made no particular impression on the New York markets, having been more or less dis- counted in well informed-commercial circles, owing to the protracted depression in the value of goods as well as the volume of transactions, coupled with the difficulty in making collections and supplementing the silver panic last summer. The market opened with less animation than usual, despite the fact that the granger roads hud agreed to mainain rates during the winter, which could not be looked upon otherwise than in a favorable light. The changes in the list at the opening were very slight, and in the early dealings fractional fluctuations were made on both sides of the account. But the speculation soon warmed up under the influence of a good buying movement in Sugar and New England, prices advanced from i to !y per cent, the two stocks named leading. The advance in- duced sales of New England, re- sulting in a reaction of 1 per cent which extended to the general list, a was followed by a steady upward movement ranging from i to 1% per cent, in which granger stocks werc most prominent, ‘The tigher level was not maintained very long, Manhattan dropping 2 per and Louis- ville & Nashvilie 1l§ per ¢ The other declines were unimportant. Some thirty minutes before noon the market became active, London was a small buyer, a Bur- lington & Quiney dividend had been de- clared and room traders were mainly on the bull side. The improvement led to realiza- tions of profits, which encouraged the bears to attack values and before 1 o'clock the market was going down hill again, The depression continued throughout the afternoon, mevely because there were no strong buyers in tLe field, while there were 4 number of sellers anxious to make a turn Heaviness was the prevailing tone to the close. ut which the depreciation in prices had ranged to 8% per cent compared with the final sales of yesterday, Cordage com- mon making the greatest dip. This morning the motion was once wmore upward, though o decline in prices had begun again before the afternoon had far advanced. here would quite probably have been an upward reaction at the start today, even had there been no news to en- cournge buying. At it happened, however, there was some actual food for encourage- ment. The Burliagton & Quincy directors gathering in Boston declured the full quar- terly dividend, an uction which fulfilled lusy week's expectation and which, it may be hoped, was Justified by the company’s inan- cial outlook. Of much importance was the news that granger railways had entered on u compact L0 mumtain rates through ihe winter season. This isa move to check such a rate demoralization as was tirenteaed by the close of World's fair tratic. As usual of late, the buying was made up largely from the coveriug of professionai docal shorts. and when this movement ceased the market n <old | THE OMAHA DAILY lapsed, first into renewed into tofdl imactivity and then weakness.
