BUSINESS IS BETTER IN ALL SECTIONS While Every Indication ef for the Best Re- ©Come At Too Late & Day ~Conditions of the Great Industries, Nrw Yorg, Nov. R. G. Dun & Co.'s woekly review of trade says: The repeal of the silver purchase act does good already. The business world in every part of the country reckons it helpful and the tone of the trade is more confident. It is hardly time as yet for the effects to be felt to any great extent in manufactures, but banke are more liberal in accommodations and merchants more hopeful in purchase. Itis well to remember that the act will do less good than if it had been passed early in the spring or without delay after congress assembled. 1t cannot now prevent soveral thousand failures which have already oc- curred or relieve creditors from resulting embarrassments. It cannot now save from loss a multitude of manufacturing establish- ments which have closed becauso the futuro seemed uncertain. 1t will go far to restore business confidence, which was much needed, but many expect from the measure larger results than can at this late day be realized. Does Not Ald Speoulation, ‘The action of congress has less visible in- fluence upon the speculative markets for producis, becauso the foreign markets ob- stinately refused to accept the higher valua- tions which speculators had tried to estab- lish. Though people across the water award unstinted praises to those who secured the passuge of the repeal bill, there is little dis- position to pay higher prices on that account, for wheat and cotton. In view of the groat abundance of money in speculative centers, the weakness®f markets 1s more significant. Industries could not be expected to make any material gain as yet, but the demand for textile products has to some extent im- proved. The metal-working industries man- ifest little intorest as yet. The minor metal markets are weaker on the whole. Voluwe of Domestic Trade. The volumo of domestic trade gains but little, exchanges, outside of Now York, beine 22.06 per cent lower _thar last year for the week. ‘The exports of products for the past month have been about $1,000,000 largor than last year's, while 1mports have been about $19,400,000 smaller, which indicates an excess of exports of 30,000,000 or more for the month. - The railroads have been doing o little better, though returns do uol, yet come up to those of last year. Failures for the weelc ‘number 338 in tho United States, sgainst 233 last year, and twenty-eight in Canada, against thirty-one last year. Only five concerns failed with linbilities exceoding $100,000 cach. Tho ae- gregate of liabilities for the week ending October 26 was larger than of late, amount- ing to 87,400,000, against $5,800,000 for tho previous week. BRADSTREET'S REVIEW OF TRADE, Improved ‘fone in Financial Circles Noted Since the Repeal Bill Vassed. New York, Nov. 8. —Bradstreet's tomor- row will say: Telegraphic advices from many of the more important business cen- ters are that some effects of the passage of the silver purchase repeal law are reflected in an improved tone in financial circles and the growth of confidence of merchants in the outlook. But it should not be disguised that the repeal is too late to have any effect on fall trade. ‘The earli¢st reported effect of repeal is seen in an improvement of demand for com- mercial paper ut New York and some other centers. The only improvement for general merchandise this week is slight at Minne- sota, Wisconsin and Iowa cities. In the cot- ton growing districts of the south collec- tions are improved. Lee, who was one of the trio of poli- ticians who secured a half-barrel of beer for campaign purposes and sold it to a Thir- teenth street saloon keeper, had a hearing yesterday morning before United States Com- missioner Anderson for wholesaling liquor without a license. He was discharged, as the testimony failed to disclose that he had any connection with the transaction other than furnishing a team to baul the booze. The other two, McNamara and McFarland, were held to the grand jury, but were released on their own recognizance. e Rheumatism originates in the morbid con- dition of the blood.
