DUN'S AND BRADSTREET'S | Olearing COonditions Now Prevail in the World of Finance. WHAT HAS BROUGHT ABOUT THE CHANGE Favorable Action by the Senate om the Ropeal Sull Helping the Good Times Along—Many Signs of Re- newed Prosperity. Nrw Yonrg, Oct, 27.—R. G. Dun & Co. weekly review of trade will say: Port is in sight after a long and stormy voyage and the prospect of a speedy ond of the struggle over repeal has brought bright hopes to busi- ness. Ttisstill too soon to expect much effect iu trade and manufactures and though monetary obstacles are to a large extent ro- moved there still remain other legisiative questions which creato uncertainty, A fact of real encouragement is that railroad earn- ings for the third week of October show an increase of 8 per cont over last year, the first increase for a long time. Wheat rose 2 cents, although exports fell to 1,100,000 bushels for the week, against 1,900,000 bushels last year, in part, because western receipts were but 5,863,000 against 8.900,000 last year. Corn declined an cighthof a cent with better roports of the yield, coffeo de- clined three-sixteenths of a cent, pork pro- ducts made only slight gains and cotton feoll one-fourth of a cent, receipts being 60,- 000 bales greater than last year. Incrensed Distribution, As yot there is seen_only a contimuance of tho alow increaso in the distribution of products which hus been noticeablo for sov- eral wooks. Nor does this gradual revival in demand extend to all branches. Most of the increase yet seen in_cotton and shoe manu- factures may be exptained by mere cxhaus- tion in stocks of dealers, as frequent ro- quests for immediate delivery show, but there is also reported & somewhat botter de- mana_from consumers, and four more cot- ton mills havo started and seven increased forc ainst seven docreasing. A similar demand has increased by six the number of hosiery and knit gouds works reported 1n operation. The shipments of shoes from the st in four weoks of October wus 28 per cent less than last year, against 83 por cent in September, sbut against eight compara- tively small_woolen mills starting five have stopped, including one of 3,000 and another of 1,000 hands. The total sales of wool at three chief markots, including several cases believed to bo for speculation, have been 9,724.211 pounds in throo weeks, ngainst 21,875,000 last year. Two additional iron furnaces have gone into blast and the present output may be a little larger than at the beginning of the month. Some rail mills have resumed manufacturing, evidently to provide for furiher, rather than present wants of their customers, and there is some addition to the number of na1l_and iron works and machine shops employed. But the demand for most products is_small; steel billets are called firmer at §50; ship plates are delivered at Philadelphia yards for $155 and bar sells with decreasing demand at $135 at Chicago. Hopes for the Future. It is hoped that monetary ease and security may encourage railroad extensions and improvements and more architectural work, but the shrinkage in_ demand is not wholiy due to the state of the money mar- kets. The number and magnitude of fail- ures decreased less than had been expected, tho linbilities in three weeks of October amounting to §15,072,920, against $7,000,000 for the same - period iast year. This week there have been 872 failures in the United States, against 187 last year and forty-four in Canada, against twenty last ye: In- cluding one bank and two~ western failures for $1,000.000 or move, there were sixty-fiva with liabilities exceeding $5,000 each, BRADSTREET"S REVIEW OF TRADE, Many Cities Report an Incrense fn Business —Omnha's Good Showlng. A conspicuous upward movement of prices last week is succeeded by a corresponding list of decreases, among which are quota- tions for [ndian corn, oats and cctton, due to heavy raceipts: in coffee, a reaction from extréme high prices is noted, and also in hogs, lard, wool, in some iustances, and lumber, particularly with the south, where it has been sold about normally figures. New YORK, Oct. 27.—Bradstreet's tomor- row will say: The changed situation at Washington and the assurance that the un- conditional repeal of the purchasing clause of the Sherman act will pass the senate has caused & marked revival of speculitive ac- tivity and bullish sentiment. Kurope ap- parently has some misgivings about the withdrawal of opposition by the silver fac- tion and has been a seller rather than a pur- chaser of Americans today. This, however, has not had any appreciable effect on the temper or tendencies of the markets. Buying by commwission houses has once more become a feature, while large operators and professional bull peols have found abundant help from that source in adyane- ing various specislties. The advance of values hus been general and though the covering of short contracts results in a large reduction of outstanding bear accounts, the operations of that party have been so ex- tended there is still a largn unprotected short interest in the market. The leaning rates for active stock furnish amplo proof of the above fact. While the market has from time to time shown a tendency to be- come dull, the reactions have been brief and the prevalent disposition has been and re- maius favorable to the establishment of a higher range of quotations, i Positive economy, peculiar merit and wonderful medicinal power are all combined in Hood's Sarsaparilla. FITTING END 10 A BAD LIFE Doo Taylor, the Famous Virginia Outlaw, Hanged for One of His Crimes, WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR ONE GOOD DEED When No Une Elss Dared He Bronght iy Arch-Enemy and Hrother Bandit to Justice and Goarded the Court House During the Trial, MortoNn, Va, Oct. 97, ated his awful Doo Taylor expi- massacre of the Mullins family on the scaffold at Wise Court House, Va, a few momerits after 2 o'clock this afternoon. Ha met death boldly and under the noose, dressod in a st of pure white linen, preached his own funcral sermon to the crowd of assembled witnesses of his doath, "o die the murderor's death on the gallows was the onlyend fitted to the cowardly career of a man like Marshall Taylor, known in tne regions where the states of Kentucky ana West Virginia join hands as Doc Tay- lor, dead shot and relentless on the teml ot those who had incurred his enmity. Yours before the desperando, Talt Hall, whose red record. furnishod display head: tines for every nowspapor in tho couatry, ended his crimes on the gallows at Wise court house Septembar 1, 1503, thers had existed a bitter feud between the followers of those two outlaws, Tho death of ono ot both of them in a duel was tio expected climax of this enity. A reward was offerod for the avrest of Hail on account of the mur. der of Oficer Hylton, for which crimoe he was vlll‘llllfll‘d and ho was arrested at Memphis, ‘enn, Taylor Captured Hali, But Hall became so much of a terror that no one could be found to take the requisition papers and bring the outlaw back for trial, It was during this juncture that Doc Taylor came to the front and oftared to undertake the dangorous mission. His services were prompuly nccepted, and he not_only brought his man back, but he guarded him with a large posse in jail and to and from the court house during a trial that lasted over a week. All this time Wise court house was in o state of siege by g bana of Hall's followers and outlaws from Ken- tucky, who threatened to rescue Hall. ‘T'ay- lor headed a heavily armed body of citizen: and by presenting a determined front do: foated the purpose of Hall's sympathizers. Doc Taylor's alliance with his enemy, the law, and the arrestor his greatest onemy caused him to carry things with a ligh and bloody hand among the mountainecrs. His last cruel aud inhuman crime, of wh he was found guilty by a jury. was the massacre of the Mulling family. Ira Mullins, his wife and two children, and a driver were returning to Virginia in a wagon from Kentucky. Muliins had all his possessions with him, including some $100 in_cash. The family was set upon in the neighborhood of Pond Gap by Doc Taylor and his gang, and uot one of them survived to tell the tale; father, mother, chiildren and the driver wers murdered, the bodies rifled and tho wagon robbed of its contents, “The nows of this crime sproad the people of the entive surrounding thosceno became first alarmed and next united in a determination to hunt down Taylor and his gang. Every man became a law officer, and aftera pursuit that was closo and marked by sevoral skirmishes, Taylor was finally captured and placed in the Wise county jail. He was tried and speedily convicted. Was One of Morgan’s Raiders. Taylor belonged to the famous cavalry band commanded by the dauntless John Morgan during the war of the rebellion and was conspicuous for doeds of reckless daring. When the war ended he returned to Kone tucky and innugurated a reign of terror in the moutains. Murders wero the dmly amusements = of his gang and although they were fre- quently arrested, the terror whi- they inspired nsured their acquittal when brought to trial. It was well known that any juror who voted to conviet any of the despersdoes would be marked for venegence by theic friends, and as a conscquence they always escaped. ylor ran his bloody course and it was the utrocity of the Mullin murders that caused the people of a whole region to rise up against him, and made his conviction, onco he was in custody of the officers of the law, certain, Ho wag very eccentric and had queer re.agiou- ideds, a kind of faith which may cause some to think his mind was unbalanced. It is said and generally believed hore that Taylor was hired to kill the Maullins and that he gota large sum of money for it. He wasa very eccentric man of spiritualistia ideas. Ho would hold spiritual seances at his home where he claimed to perform won- derful feats through the influence of the spirits. pidly and WOULD-BE SLAYER WILL BE SLAIK Roselans Jullen Seoking to Kill His Broth= ors* Lynchers 18 Himsalf Droppea On, New OrLEANS, Oct. 27.—From information received hero it is believed that Roselans Julien, ‘the murderer of Judge Estopinal, whose thres brothers were lynched by a mob Just after the muvder, is surrounded 1n a drainage machine at Boutte station, thirty miles above the city.
