Work of the Season About Completed by During the past six months the farmers of Douglas, Sarpy and Washington counties have deyoted a good deal of their time to watching some surveyors who have been running lLines and attending strictly to minding their own business. Being unable to discover the object of making the surveys the tillers of the soil have imagined new railroads, canals and about everything else, though there is-nothing of this kind in work of the men with chains and compasses. The real facts in the case are that they are government employes and are working in accordance with ‘the recommendations ¢ Manders who® some 'y that a topo- y should be made of the sub- region lying between the British pos- us and the Mexican border and be- cn the 07th and 100th parallel, Acting upon the recommiendation of the Ne- braska ~ senator, John H. M, Renshaw is now in the city. He came here for the purpose of lookingover the work in Douglas county. When seen last night id th ompletion of the survey meant a g 1 for the western count as it would rosult in having a complete and correct topographical map of the entire coun- try, The map would show every stream and the flow of water in each ; it would show farm and every tract of vacant land, as well as showing the contour of the entire co of the sub-arid belt. To do this ele- vations had been taken every twenty feot, and h time the sea level was shown, When completed these maps will be for distribution and will be filed in the ofices of the county clerks, that they may be used for reference. T'he map of Doiglas county will be on a scale of one inch to the mile and will show all of the cities, towns, roads, farms and water courses, The surveyors working in this distrie have taken the measurements of the Platt und Ellchorn rivers, but s yet they havo not made their deductions “which ~ enabl them to determine the amount of water in either of the streams, hence Mr. Renshaw is at o loss Lo suy whether or not theve 15 sufiicient quanti f water to furnish the power which is claimed by the Platte River Canal company. This survey, the ofMeial geographer claiws, will bo of great value to county com- missioners who have a desire to build good roads in their respective counties, ‘The maps of the Platte valley from the Missouri river to 4 point 'as far west as North Platte will be completea and ready for distribution some time during the coming winter, With the completion of the present survey the work of the government will not end, as this is only preliminary to what is to follow. As soon as this surface work is done another force of surveyors will be put into the field for the purpose of making u geological sar- vey of the entire country covered by the present forces. The work of these men will be to determine upon what minerals underly the surface and at what depth flowing wells may be obtained. This work will be com- meiced next season and will be proseuted until completed. Pills that ou Little Early Risers.
