New York, Oct. 17.—There was a fairly active speculation on the Stock exchange today, and large blocks of Distilling, Read- ing, Sugar and Burlington changed hands. But it was a brokers’ market almost entirely, and the dealings, even during the brief periods of strength, which served merely to stem the downward movement temporarily, were feverish aud irregular. There was at no time during the day what might be calied strong buying except in Distilling, which was supported from the inside, and which was bolstered up by the repeated story that the Distribution company had been brought to terms and that favorable congressional action was to be anticipated. The stock closed at 3135, a deciine of 11 per cent. Reading declined steadily from the opening on- heevy selling. The close was within 11§ per cent of the best figures of the day, but | per cent below yesterday's final sales. The gen- eral market wus stronger and higher at the opening and an advance of 11 was made, in which the industrials were leaders. A sell- ing movement was developed, however, within the first fifteen minuces of business, under the influence of which the values depreciated, and with an occasional feeble rally the tendency of prices was downward during the rest of the day, the close being heavy at declines ranging from 1 10 2 per cent, the latter in Ch'cago, Bur- lington & Quincy; 13¢ per cent in Rock Isl- and; 114 per cent iu Manhattan consols and | American Tobacco; 13¢ per cent in Chicago Gas, General Electric, Lake Shore, New York and Northern: 1 per centin Missouri Pacific, and 1 per cent in Reading. " Tuespay, Oct. 17, So far this week compared with last there has been an increase of about 2,500 cattle, no change in hogs and a decrease of nearly 4,000 sheep. The cattle ‘market was §low and dull throughout, but prices were httle if any lower than on Monday. Receipts were lib- eral and there was the usualscarcity of beef cattle. Tho supply was sufficiently large, however, to spare buyers for local dressed beef houses any anxiety on the sub- ject or filling their orders. Fair to good 1,060 to 1,400-lb corn-fed na- tive steers sold at #4.25 and §4.05 and at least one bunch would have brought & or better if it had sold. The western cattle included quite a few very decent beeves and prices ranged from $3 to £3.90 for fair to choice stock, while there was some here good enough to sell at considerably over $1. The feeling was weak and trading slow throughout. Cows according to buyers sold at steady to strongor prices, while according to sellors prices rulel steady and weaker. There were not over fifty loads on sale and the movement was rather sluggish, poor to choice cows and heifers selling at from $1 to $2.80, with the bulk of the decent stuff at around $1.80 and §2.25. Calves were in good demand and steady at from §2.25 to $4.50. There was no particular change in tho market for rough stock and common to good bulls, oxen and stags sold at from § to £2.50. The stocker and feeder trade was fairly active with not much change to note. Good to choice heavy feeders sold perhaps a shade stronger, while light common st cattlo were not in much demand, although hardly noticeably lower. The demand was very good from all sources and a large volume of business was transacted. Good to choice feeders are quoted at from $3 to §,50, fuir to good at from £2.60 to &, with common and wnferior stuff at around §2 to $2.50, Repre- sentative sales: DRESSED BEEF.
