Oct. 10.—The speculation on the Stock exchange today was chasacterized by an increased activity and the transactions were in heavier volume than for a week past, but there was nothing healthysin the tone of the market and the movement of the ¥ s was not concerted. The dealings were spusmodic and while good buying was in progress 1n one pool there was brisk sell- iug in another. At the opening of the day’s business the general list was unsettled, the first sales showing fluctuations both up and down, Louisville & Nashville making a break of 115 pev cent, followed by a recovery of # per cent to 4575, then reacting to 434, rallying to 4415 and closing av 43%, a declin of Bl¢ per cent on the day. While there was some selling of this stock for London account, the sales were mainly for local bears and were based in the new 1ssue of shaves, there being no other known vnfavorable influences. During the early morning the rest of the market moved up- ward, the industrials tuking the lead, but the raid on Louisville had the effect of rad- ually depressing the entive list, and befor 11 o'clock a reaction haa set in, whicl carried prices down a fraction. Th was followed by a rally, which was quickly succeeded by ' another downward movement, which ran through the afternoon, the prevailing ten- dency being toward lower figures, and the close was decidedly heavy, prices comparea with yesterday's sales being a dacline 1 the active list, ranging from 3¢'to 13{ per cent, the exceptions being Whisky, Northwestern and Sugar, common and preferred, which show an advance on the day of 3 tol per cent. As noted before, Louisville & Nash- ville led in the downward movement, Evans- ville & Terre Haute following with a drop of 215 per cent. Selling orders from Bos- ton for Union Pacidc led to the re- nowal of rumors of an impending re- ceivership for that cowpany and a raid was made on the shares, sending them down from 187 at the close’ yesterday to | at the close today, & loss of 2% per cent. Missouri Pacific was also weak and closed at a decline of 13; per cent, Reading is down 115 per cent, Chicigo, Burlington & Quincy and General Electric 13 per cent, Nortwestern 3¢ per cent, Chicago Gas, Atchison, Balti- more & Ohio and Rock Island % per cent, and St. Paul % per cent. Exceptions to the general wenkness were some of the usually inactive shares. American Tobacco pre ferred recorded an advance on the day of 1i per cent, American Cattle and St. Paul, Minnecapolis & Manitoba 13 per cent, Pull: man 11g per cent, and Consohdated Gas 1 per cent. The Post says: Last winter gold went out at the rate of £3,000,000 to $4,000,000 a week and as most of this, by the use of treasury notes, was taken from the treasury tho: government’s gold fell §25,000.000 within six months. Without gold exports the federal gold reserve is now shrinking at aratenot far from $1,000000 a day. The reason for this more rapid fall is that the government has now practically o working surplus except of gold, There are some fa tors distinctly in the treasury’s favor. One is the very slack demand for currency to move the crops, western monetary centers Dbeing now well supplied as a result of tho direct gold imports. Some of the observers at Washington thiuk, too, that pension ex- penditures have reached a maximum, and will henceforth decline. But it would need contraction in expenses much greater than this to offset the enormous and continuous surinkage in customs and internal revenue, “The following are the closing quotations of the leading stocks on the New York ex- change today Afchisg 8} I Adams ? itie. profil Altc W D20 [U.P.
