Krause of the dry goods firm of Bicomingdule Bros. appeared in the Tombs police court today und reiated an interesting story to the yre- siding judee. “Apart from my interest in the firm of Bloomingdale Bros,” said Mr. Krause, “I have for a long time been dealing in commercial pa- per, and have had a good many transactions with the late Samuel Adler, who had a marble yard on East Fifty- seventh street. On May 7 last his son Oscar brought me a note purporting to be signed by L. F. Rob: son & Sons, 30 Spruce street, for §750, pay able at four months in the Hide and Leather National bank. It was endorsed by Samuel Adler, arfd 1 had no hesitation in discount- it, believing Jt to be genuine. ¢ in June 1 ascertained the note was a wd 1 complained to Inspector Me- Loughlin. “I held at that time about §20,000 worth of Adler's notes, and T began to investigate Whether they were all right or not. These are about one-sixth of the total number of textile mills in Philadelphia. It was found that out of a total of nearly 50,000 men normally employed in the 120 mills only o few more than 6,000 are atwork. In sixty wills of Kensington, 12,762 are unemployed, while 1,670 are working on from full time down to half time.
