Tsham, who h deputy collector of custon the throe years, visited all the big mines, and from the records obtained data showing that Alaska is annually adding to the wealth of this country about #7,000,000. He camo down from Sitka furnisted tho Post-Intolligoncer with the first customs data that have over been given out with reforence to Aluska, Commander Ludlow, of the man-of-war Mohican, estimates that this yeass sealing catch from polagic soaling will by about 00,000 skins, which is reasonably valued at £20,00. This does not include 7,500 skins taken by the lessees of tho seal islands, which would_increase the income from seal: ing to about #1.000,000 annually, Mr. Isham says the gold product this year is about $1,000,000. 1t s difficult to ascertain ctunl output, for the reason that it 1s impossible to get the exact figures from the miners on the Yukon river, They come out of that country with from $2,000 to $6,000 each iv gold dust, and as a rulo they do not re to state their oxact earnings. The Treadwell mines, however, turn out §700,000 in gold bullion each year, and it is to sum the other gold product up at about &500,- 000, In spoaking of the fishing industry of Alaska, Colonel Isham said: *As I understand the matter the can- neries that belong to the combinations en- tered into an agreement not to put_up more than 400,000 cases this year. From re- ports received to September 1 I esti- mato the catch at 250,000 cases. The in- dependent canneries have packed ubout 50,000. The wholo output will not exceed 300,000 cases. I adaition to this combina- tion there areseveral sailing yessels engaged in codfishing for private parties, notably the Lizzio Colby of Seattle. The catch in 1891 was 1,350,000 fish, valued at 09,000 This output _will be considerably increased this The fur circular issued by Secrotary slo has been posted throughout Aleska by the customs ofticers and white men are not trapping fur-vearing animals so much this yoar as heretoforo, This will b tendency to deciease the fur shipments. Hard Times Fish, Probably humpbacked salmon were never cheaper or thicker in Tacoma than they are right now. All sizes, from threo to six pounds, are selling for 1 cont per fish. A vateh of 107 were sold 10 an enterprising ex- pressman the other day for 81, says the Ta- coma Ledger. About 3,500 fish were brought in during the day by fishing boats. Chariey Eggers, the fisherman for the Puget Sound Fishing company, brought in a scow load containing about a ton of fish at ono time, About chree tons were sent away by it packed in ic The fish whicn for the past two weoks have been playing in schools uround the bay are now beginning to go up the river and the creeks. Their meat on this account is not as good as it hs been herctofore. Fish- ermen say that they will soon disappear up the streams and the silver salmon will put in their appearance. Two or three of the boat loads just brought in were caught in the channel of the Puvallup river, The dif- ference iu the meut of those and tho meat of the ones caught out in the bay could bo plaiuly seen, The meat becomes whiter and is less firm. About sixty silver salmon were also brought in. They aro a most veautiful fish now and aro in their very prime. Instead of selling at the rate of five pounds for 1 cent thoy are selling for 5 cents per pound, and there is a good demand for them at that price. People continue trolling for them outin the bay, though the most of them roturn without any fish. In tho courso of a few days they will be numorous in the harbor, as they invariably follow close upon the humpbacked salmon. The silver salmon in turn give way to the hideous dog salmon, which will not appear for several weeks yot. Copper Rock Gold. Copper Rock s _situated eloven and one- holf miles from Boulder on the Union Pacific railroad. The scenery is not surpassed by any in Colorado. The village of Copper Rock, though only a few months old, has a thriving population of about 100_people, con tains & postoffice, oxpress office, lotel stores and a weekly newspaper. “The name Copper Kock is derived from a dyko of eruptive porhyry that is stained with copper of so bright a green that it can be scen for miles. 1t may require the ex- penditure of a great deal of money to develop this camp, but in tho course of time it will be done. The district offers strong induce- ments for the investment of capital, and some prowinent men have besn giving their attention of late to this camp. Within the past few weeks soveral Philadelphia par- ties have invested largely. Many of Denver's most_enterprising business men aro also largely interosted. The owners of this property have recently refused 2a offer of §0,000. The Jordan tun- nel goes into the mountain ut the rate of six and s half feet per day. Good minoral veins havebeen tapped in running this tunnel. The owners are well paid for their labors thus far. A fow days ago the president of a com- pany mining at Copper Rock said that mag- nificent oro had been opencd up in i certain mine owned by the Colorado Cousolidated Tunnel company that was equal to anything yet discovered in tho Orphan Boy. Thisis worth about $40,000 per ton and is shivped east for refining. The $15.- 200 now brought in s the result of u threo weeks run. Tho ore runs from $15 to $#40 per ton, and a good deal of it yiclds above §25. 'I'he mine is now working seventy men and this number will be increased since the ore grows richer a8 the work progresses. A great many peo- plo have gone to Maiden during the last few weeks and the camp continues to prosper. Only a few days ago an officinl went through hiero with a gold bar from tho old Spotted Horse mine valued at §1,000, Closed for Repairs. Love, at present a vesident of Gassey guleh and which became famous as a producer of values and was known as the “bob tail ox arasta” from the fact that the motive power was furnished by an ox with an abbrevinted tail who had survived tho overland teip from “old Missouri” und lived to take an important part in the first su cesssful reduction of gold quartz in Colorado. These machines aro being built to work the dirt from the Silver Panic_placer, sit- uated on the saddle est of the Victor mine, This dirt all pans well and contains a good deal of quartz which1s quite vich in gold and is freo milling. ‘Iho owners believe that tho scouring the ores will be subjected o will brighten it up so thata much higher saving will bo made than on astamp mill. The vein opened is eight feot wide and has two nay streaks, ono on each wall, and each over twenty inches wide. Tho quartz is unlike that found in the Raven, being crystallized to a greater degreo and to some exient is stained with flourine. A prospector recently, by accident, came upon his habitation and entered it. 'he cave being rather darlk, the visitor was not at once observed by the hermit, and tho miner had a good look at him. Immediately upon realizing that an intruder was in his home, the hermit made a dive for the open- ing, uttering no sound save a savage growl. He was followed by our hero to the opening and was observed ruuning like a deer over rocks and previpices, finally disappearing in the brush. ‘I'he hermit is described as a man about 60 yoars of age, tall and slim. Ho was entirely naked, but covered with a thick growth of hair. His hair and beard completely covered tho upper portion of his body, and his eyes were wild, filled with a flery expression. ‘He ovidently subsisted on game and berries, and his food ‘must be cooked in a most primitive manner, as no utensils known to the civilized world were visible, After Wolf Sealps.
