FIGHT ON THAT OLD DIiFFERENTIAL Council Blaffs Merchants Aroused—Th Rook Isiand’s Pusition in the Fight rospects of w Bitter Strug- &le Over the AMair. Commissioner Utt after reading the od- ftorial in the Council Blufts Nonpareil of yes- terday morning regarding the bridge arbi- trary, telegraphed Congressman Morcer to redouble hjs efforts in having thediscrimina- tion against Omaha removed. The editorial, which contains many misstatoments, roused the commissioner considerably, and hoe pro- coeded to don the gloves for another go ab the railroads. Mr. H. A. Snyder, general agent of the Rock Tsland, who was liberally quoted in yesterday's Ber, had also somothing to add to the literature of the bridge toll question when secn by & reporter. Speaking of the history of the recont struggle to abolish tho arbitrary, Mr. Snyder saia: “When the special meating of tho ronds was called in Chicago to discuss the bridge arbitrary the Rook Island was the only road voting in favor of its abolishment from Omaha to pontsin lowa. We have not deviated from the position then taken re- garding this question, and my interviow published in Tue Ber of July 20 still holds good. When we met antagonism from other roads the only thing left for us to do was to quietly wait our opportunity to absorb the arbitrary. and undoubtedly that will oe done eventually. Conditions, howover, have been against © us and | whero ' we ox- pectod sympathy we have met with lukewarmness, and in some cases strong opposition. The reflection on the Rock Island in T Berof yesterday is un- warranted and unjust, because Omaha's in- terests are our interosts. Wo have con- tended all along that agitation of this ques- tion would not bring about a change s5 soon as astill hunt, and that is our position toduy. Wo have not tried to carry wateron both shoulders, us intimated in Tz Brr, but on the contrary cite you to the proceedings in the special meeting whero tho Rock Island was the only road vouing for the chunge, If © we are allowed to proceed in our own way I have not the lenst doubt about the final termination of this problem in favor of Omaha. Council Bluffs and Omaha are really one city and both should enjoy the same rates. That is the Rock Island’s position in a nutshell. 1 have explained this to Commissionor Utt and many of the leading business men of Omaha, and wonder how our position could havo been so misunderstood. It has all along been Mr. Sage’s intention to abolish the arbitrary from Omaha to lowa points, but he wanted to do it quiotly instead of go- ing into a fight with othor roads and getting knocked out. Molasses catches miore flies than vinegar, and that accounts for the ap- varent slowness in_accomplishing what we have always regarded as right.” WILL RESTORE RATES, Central Trafio Association Lines Will Have No Further Cause for Complaint. Cuicaco, Sept. 7.—Lake and rail rates are to be restored September 18 to the basis originally agreed uvon for the season. Pressure brought to bear on the lake lines by their trunk line conncetions has brought about this vesult, which will remove the grievances of tho Central Trafe association lines. It bears out their contention that tho wrunk lines can control their lake line cos nections when they want to, and when the; refuse to do so they are responsible for thei actions, ‘The restoration of rates will end much bickering and strife and prevent any more loss of traftic by the Central Traflic as- sociation lines on account of the unequal competition to which they have been sub- jected for the last two or three weeks. A party of railroad men and exporters lefu the city this evening for Newport News, Va., in charge of Edward F. Cost, general northwestern agent of the Chesapeake & Ohio road, to participate in the inauguration of that company’s new line of transatlantic steamers, to run from that point to Liver- pool, London, Glasgow and European ports, By the placing of these steamors in commis- sion a new direct route is opened up be- tween Chicago and the great centers of trade and commerce in Great Britain and Europe. It is expected that the imm effect will be a material ncrease in Chi cago's export trade. Six five new steamers are to be placed on the lme, Thoy have been constructed especially for this trade and with a view of their use to a very la extent as live stock boats, ‘The inaugura tion ceremouies will be heldat Newport Nows Saturday. There 1s some hitch an this arrangement and a meet- ing of the southwestern lines has been called for tomorrow to straighten it out. ROMANCE OF THE XIDWAY Oupid Doss & Turn at the Great Colambian Show. ABDUL LATEEF WINS AN AMERICAN BRIDE etty Jennle Nammond Meots Her Fate Wt the Fair in the Person of the Dark-Eyed Ohief of the Turkish Fazaar, CHICAGO, Sept. 7.—At last Midway has a genuine romanco and thero 1s an undercurrent of excitement in the Turk- ish village over what promises to be- comb the sensation of the World's fair season. It is nothing less than a lovo affair of the most interesting charactor between Abdul Lateof, a swarthy, darks eyed subject of the sultan, and Miss Jon- nie Hammond, a blonde-haited young woman of Bellaire. O., who came here with ner parents to visit tho fair about threo weeks ago. Abdul is chief of the bazaar in the Turkish exhibit. It is learned that he met the young woman on the third day of her visit to the fair, when she was viowing the strango sights of the Mid- way in company with her father and mother, and he fell “deadly” in love with ner at fivst sight. There was no chanco that day for love- making, but the warm glances from Abdul’s dark eyes were not lost on the maiden, Whilo she was examining va- rious trinkets of Turkish _jewelry, such as bracolets, brooches, rings, ote., he managed to show his interest in her by a few words of broken English, which the parents thought were spoken in jest, and asked her to be sure and come " back to the Turkish viliage. The invitation, it soems, was accepted in earnest. Many visits followed. So constantly were the young woman's steps turned to- waid the Turkish village on each day's visit to the fair, thav her parents, who were slow to suspect such s strango in- fatuation on the part of their daughter, could hardly believe their own sonses when the truth dawned upon them. No sooner did they satisfy themselvos that there was Somothing more than a passing fancy in the attachment than they took prompt steps to put an end to it. With reproachful words they strove to disenchant their danghter. They ap- pealed to her sense of pride and o her religions convictions. = At first she seemed to yield to their persuasions, but from what followed it is seen that she was not as deeply impressed with their pleadings as she pretended to be. M. and Mrs. Hammond had to return home without their daughter, she beg- ging to remain a few weeks longer to see the fair. She promised them, how- ever, that she would not go near the Turkish exhtbit. From what Abdul and his friends say, howevar, it is doubtful whether Miss Hammond will ever re- turn to her Ohio home. The romantic courtship has progressed, it is said, to the point where Abdul has proposed and has been accepted. Abdul, who is said to be well-to-do in Turkey, will settie upon his bride-elect a sum of money, besides a number of camels and sheep. One-halfof the dowry must be paid in money when the mar- riage contract is sigied; the rest after the marriage has been consummated, By this marriage Miss Hammond, who is quite good looking and not much over 20 years old, will takeupon herself vows never to appear in public without veil- ing her face. This is the Mohammedan law, not given as a command of God, but as arule of Mohammed, his prophet, which is good to be carried out. She will be compelled to wash her husband’s feet with scented water and serve him with sherbet and coffee whenever he ae- sires such refreshment. = Fine boativg, Courtland beach. e BI1G DEAL 1.
