St i s STRLEET CAR FENDER, Practieal Exhibliion of a Lifo Saving De- vice, the most remarkable exhibi- ith in one's own ingenuity and apparently utter disregard for the fear- ful consequences should the invention prove defective, was seen in Rocheste \. Y., recontly, when George Foster, the inventor of a life saving device to be attached in front of the electric cars, 8tood up bravely before a swiftly move ing car and allowed himself to be canght in the net which he had devised. The exhibition took place on the track which crosses Otsego street and connects the barns ofytho eleetric railway. Car No. 352 of the Monroe avenue line was equipped with the wire net aud rubber tubing of which the life saver is made. Mur. Foster then took his position on the track, having no thought of using dummy Mr. ster shouted to the motorman to come ahcad at full speed, but the latter was afraid and allowed the car to approach very slowly. The stretchea tubing struck Mr. Foster’s ankles and, knceking his feet from under him, threw bim in a heap into the netting. The inventor and demanded that the next tr be made while the car was going at full speed Still the motorman’s courage failed, but after the fearless inventor had heen rolled into the net several times withont receiving a ateh, the moto put on hix mettle and sent the car acro the stroteh of lovel track at full sp The inventor scemed to make an extra revolution or two hefore falling into the net, but still n with no m. It will be remembered that City Engincer Rosewater declared that the ground was springy, but tho parties who originally owned it und wanted to sell it to the gov- crnment ridiculed the idea, and insisted that all the water scen there was “surfuce water,” and duc only to the rains. Archi- tect Latenser hasabout made up his mind that these parties were right and that the water is due to rains, but he is ready to ad- mit that a rafu six months old will serve to keep the water flowing just as well as ono tnat fell only twenty-four hours ago. Water continues to flow out of the ground inside the walls of the foundation, and it has been found necessary to put in a sewer connection to take carc of the apparently uuending supply Mr. Latenser s springs oxist ther the water could , 82,00 and $2.50 Also ladies’ Toe $1.00 a and Omaha trip cents, T 30 Discovery the block esterday morning that i that'the flowing of ily be discerned. The present discharge from the springs is said to be fu small as can be expected. as it is midsammer, and the ainiall light, yot the discharge has re- mained the same tor tho past four months. Mr. Lateuser is of the opinion that in the avly suring it would be much haavier. A great deal of money was spent in making tests, driving pilesat various points, and in other waya, aud the opinion of the experimenters was that the ground would support a weight of a ton and a half to the Squave foot, and the footings of the columns and walls were enlarged to moeet that re- quirement. The walls will not be unusually heavy, being much lighter than those of “Lire BeE building, and about the same, com- \tivoly, as the Paxton block.
