NEWS FROM COUNCIL BLUFFS Doctors Take Up for Disoussion the Subject of the City's Drinking Water, PRESENT QUALITY ROUNDLY DENOUNCED Wil Try to Enjoin the North Omaha Sewer- Strictares on the Company -Dr. Macrie Defends the Missouri as & Bource of Suppiy. A meeting of the regular physicians of the city was called for Wednesday ovening to considler the water supnly question, which has been agitating the people of Council Bluffs for the past few years. arteen re sponded and a lively discussion was had upon that all-important topic. Some of the physicians took the water company to task in extremo terms for the filthy condition of the water which is dished up for drinking purposes. Dr. C. H. Pinney even went o faras to offer to buy $10.000 worth of stock in & company to be orggoized for the purposes of digging artesian wells and conveying the water from the vicinity of the famous Mynster springs. ©The recent opening of the North Omaha sewer at a point several miles above whero the water supply of this city is taken from the Missouri river was mado the subject of a resolution requesting the city cil to take some immediate action toward having such a state of affairs provented by legal measures in the United States courts if nec- essary. The same resolution recommended that the council compel the water company to filter the water furnished the citizens. ! 1 the A City Physician Macrae, in ) on the subject yesterday, stated that he did not think strong languave against the Missouri river as a source of drinking wat supply was justified. “T'lie Missouri river water is the best in the world,” said he; “whatever fault is to bo found ‘must be laid at the door of the pany. 1 presume that there is six feot of filth in the bottom of the veservoirs, and it is to that fact that we must ascribe the oc- casional finding of o fishscale or some other uncanny object in the water we are supposed to drink." Dr. Macrae intends to have a analysis of the water made by chemist in order to determine whether or not it is actually unfit for use from a sani- tary standpoint. Samples will be taken from the river at u point as far below the tw cities as the source of the preseut water supply is be- the mouth of tho North Omaha wer, in order to ascertaln whether the river scours itself in that distance. Other simens will also be taken from the hydrants and a thorough analysis will be made. He had accepted some of the loftiest traditions about womanhood that men sometimes read and talk about, and he looked for his ideal companion. One night he met her in the drawing room of a London friend, who, without his knowing it, had brought the young lady to meet the eyes of the great writer. It was a June night: he was looked like a Greck goddess, He was dazzled. She was a tall, ful girl of 19, with a face and figare as faultless as one of the statues of old. No one ever expected Ruskin to fall in love and he did not. She was poor, needed a home and its comforts, and so they were married. Their wedded 1if e friendly, kindly to the highest degree, bat there was not a spark of affection t She admire the great man she had married and was geateful for the wealth and comfort he Showered on her. He worshiped her as he would the marble made lifelike by the seulptor’s chisel. ‘'here was nothing human about the life they led as husband and wife, and she was o woman who, in her heart, like all true women, laughed at the tradi- tions that made her sex love distant wor- ship. One day Ruskin brought paint his'wife's pieture. And the man was Millais, and he was a bright, cheery, handsome fellow, human, every inch of him, with a great and absorbing love for the beautiful and a willingness to tell of his love. He began to paint the portrait of the magnificent woman, and when he had finished he was in love with his friend’s wife. Womanlike she saw it, and perhaps she was not full of sorrow and reproach. It was the first tribute of real manly love that had ever lainat her feet. And Ruskin! His wide s suw the romance that was weaving around those two lives and his heart zed how lit- tle affection he had tolavish on the woman whom he had made his wife. How he told her the story of his pride in her and the sacrifice he “was to make for her, while she lay prone at his feet, is one of the things which only he or she could te It is difficult to obtain a divorce in Ingland, but John Ruskin secured it for her, and one bracing morning in the carly winter, a month after the divorce was granted, Ruskin stood beside the couple in one of London’s quiet churches and saw them made man and wife. That was a good many years ago, and since then Millais h become rich and famous and is now Sir John and nis wife is my Lady Millais. OThe warmest, sturdiest friend the struggling pasinter had in his toiling days was the man whose wife he had marricd, and through all the years of Millais’ later success and greater honor John Ruskin has been the welcome guest and almost daily visitor to the man and woman whose lives ho so unselfishly erowned with happines It is a strange story, and the world knows little about it, and some men have condemned him, as some women have censured her. But the two men and that one woman who knew best have been happy and contented with the change that John Ruskin's pure unsel- fishness brought into their 1 And s0 the world should not complain. - Roducing Expenses.
