e e e ——————— e - 2, . 2 e At S, et e S COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wheat and Bilver Went Down the Incline Together Yestordag, ALL PREVIOUS SLUMPS WERE PASSED Tmmediate Cause of the Demoralization of the Grain Market Found i the Enormous Increns India’s Crop. CH10AGO, Juno 20.~Tho fall of Lucifor was about tho ouly thing on record in the way of descent that was not outdone today by wheat and silver. The unfortunato staples went down into the depths together. While silve was selling in Now York at 62¢, the lowest figure evor touched for the white metal, wheat was being offercd here at 62%¢ a bu. for July, & prico fur below all previous slumps. Wieat was beaten like an fll-favored or- phan. Noone scemed to wish to take care of ftand it got turned over from hand to hand. The chief and fmmediate cause of the demor- alization was the surprising announcement made in Beerbolim’s eablegram that India had produced in five sections of the country 66, 0)0,000 bu. more wheat this year than in 1802, All previous reports from that country had lel to a belief that the Indian crop was u short one. It yet remains to be seen whotl er the other districts of that coun- try have nct taled in production to as wuc oF greater extent than the five sections men- tioned by Beerbohm, Liverpool was quoted chenper to effect sales, hut the London con- tango market was quoted firn tinentil demand at 8d ndv and Walla Walla white wheats. The opening price tor July wis 03%c, or ox- actly lc per hu. lower than it closed yestordny. Bepfember started at 69igc, which showed o decline since the previous ifternoon of about ige. Tn the conrse of half an hour July made another dive to 621c and September to 68%c¢, Teaving i gapof G on deliverics, an altoget previously unheard of carrying churge and smashing the records of cash wheat. The panic in silver was, of course, the leading source of wenkness, but aside from this ne regarding Indinn wheut there was news of helptul rains fn the northwest. The decline further aided by speculative Tongs, who were forced tosell thefr July wheat, oW ing 10 the proximity of the month. Pard- ridge and other big shorts bought heavily at the bottom and stopped the decline. Reports of ieavy declines in silver and the clearances Of K00.000 bu. of wheat in kernel and flour helped to steady the market. Tle market at the opening for July was from fc to le lower sad for Septeniber from %e to e lower thin esterday’s closing, ruled weaker and prices turther declined 1c for Tuly and e for Sep- tember, then rallied slightly, July advancing ¢ ind September fic, gain gased off and the closing was easy from i 1 the bot- to Trading throughout th y was, PIIP- tieularly during the bad decline, marked by conslderuble nervousness and excitement. Corn was weak, the nction of wheat and continuous favorable reports and liberal re- ceipts all hiving that tendency. A good deal of chunging was indulged in, sciling July and buying September, the difference at the open- init elng About 13§¢, and Intor widened (0 2. First trades were from e to 3¢ loss and upon free offerings worked down e more. At the decline a fair rally took place and the market heldsteady, showlng an advance of lac, but July weakened and at the close had lost from 3e 1o %e, while September wus steady und un- ehanged. Outs declined e for near futurcs, The drop was duo to the increased offerings and in syni- pathy with wheat and corn. There was good deal of selling of July und buying of Sep- tember thit made the former weak, but hela the latter strong and it closed '4e over yester- day. ‘ine feature of tho speculative market for provisions was the widening out ot the ng clirges for lard from Tuly to September 10 80¢ early. At the close charies were from 70c to It was claimea th those who ‘have bought for July cannot fin the money to enable them to curry, and th Dbankers refused to n advances on the basix of the present price of the product, so the buyers are, ficuratively speaking, in w cleft stick—they must elther p: B/lln' premium demanded or tuke the stuff. New YOuk, June The early dealings at the Stock exchange were characterized by great depression owing chiefly to the appre- hension felt in regard to the money market and the difficulty experienced by borrowers in securing accommodations. At one time 1t was not n question of sales, but rather one of ob- taining funds on any terms. Small loans wero made as high as 8-16 per cent per diem and Interest equul to about 2 per cent per annun, and even then no round amounts were obtainable. It was not until certaln of the bankers decided to take out many millions of clearing house lonn cortificates that the acute strin showed signs of reiaxing. Added to the money difliculty wus the renewed de- vression in silver both here and in London. While storiiug exch was decidedly weuker, bankers did not see their way clear to mport gold. The bears took advantage of all these conditions and hammered the list vigor- ously with the view of shaking ouf weuk holders of stocks.
