Property Owners Paylng Up to Avold the Penalty That Comes in July. City taxes become delinquent this year the first day of July, and there is a constant stream of peovle passing to and from the of- fice of the city treasurer. The total tax for this year amounts to £000,000, and of this amount about $30,000 has been paid in. Tt is expected that by the st $100,000 wiil be ro- ed. The amount in this year so far is in excess of that received for the same period of last year, After July 1 there is a penalty of 1 per cent per month for nonpayment of taxes, Yet there is invariably but 4 small amount of taxes paid in previous to the date of do- linquency, and the property owners do not manifest much of a desire to escape the pen- alty. The largest day's receipt at the treas- urer's office was on the day of the recent run on the savings banks, On that day 20,000 was passed over the counter, Collcetions at the close of the current year generally foot up 80 or 85 per cent of the total tax “Ihere is a great change taking place in the payment of taxe said Deputy Coulter, *“I'he time was not long since when we rarely trausacted business with a woman and they were infrequent visitors in our ofice. Now it is eutirely different. Fully two-thirds of the taxes are now paid by the women, and if it keeps on our transactions will bo almost wholly with the fair sex when it comes to paying taxes. Ican't say that object to the change. Wo find thein very reasonable and lovel-headed 1n most instances, and they conduct themselves in a very businesslike way. In fact, many husbands might learn very valuable lessons in business and affa- bility from their wives. | attribute the chauge to the fact that the men are busy, and as it requires considerable time and is quite tedious work in securing the tax lists, they shift the responsibility to the women, e No foreign substance euters into Cook's Extra Dry Imperial Champagne, It's the pure Juice of the grapes nuuufi’ly fermented) PRESIDENT CLARK 1S SICK Foroed to Quit All Work and Worry for the Time Being, WILL SEEK RELIEF IN PENNSYLVANIA Mead of the Unlon Pacific Leaves for an Eastern Resort and Will Not Return Until e 18 Tmproved In ‘Health—-Rail Notes. Talking of Maximum Rates. The rate makers of the Nebraska railroads are attempting $o adjust the maximum rates fixed by the new state law to the conditions surrounding the soveral roads. This work. it is said, is being done that the directors of the roads may know the exact offect of the enforcement ‘of the new law. Whether or not they will contest the law in the courts can then be determinea. Two sets of tariffs have been prepared by the rate 's, one giving Omaha the basing point the other making Lincoln the point of vantage. But the work devolving on the rate checkers does not end here by any means, as they still have to check up rates from local points based on the new differential as well as propare comparative statements for the benefit of the presidents. All this takes time, and it will be two weeks before the work is finished. Today the West of the Missouri Froight Rate committee meots in Kansas City to select a successor to Mr. George Me- Fadden, who takes the position of gene freight agent of the Paducah, Tennessce & Alabama railroad. So far as known by the Omaha lines thero is not a candidate for the position and it has been suggzested by & freight man that the members of the committee elect a bundle of baled hay for the place. The committee hus served its purpose and outlived its usefulness. A stronger agree- ment is needed to _hold the lines intact, be- cause rates are being cut in the transmis- souri country that the roads may have use for their idlo freight cars which crowd the yards of the companios and line the sidings along the systems. In view of the meeting today in Ian- sas City the gentlemen who are working on the maximum rate bill will resume their duties in the rooms of the committee thero instead of continuing to pay rent at the Millard, while their quarters in Kansas City stand idle, Messrs, Wood of the Union Pacific, Crosby of the Burlington and Merchant of the Elk- horn left last evening to attond the meet- ing. Hall owned alot out at Twenty- fourth and Farnam and was allowed $200 damages by the appraisers, W. J, Kennedy, Lhomas Swobe “and A, L. Strang. The amount was not satisfactory and he went into court, and for nine long ars the caso has been pending, though a sottlement was effected many months ago. The Klkhorn quarrels were among tha cases which disuppeared trom the ecourt records, both factions being willing that they should be dismissed. Three yoars ago Gus- tavo Kaessner, by his conduct, did things that were not in strict accord with the pro- visions of the ordinances of . tho town and as a natural consequence he was arrested and thrown iuto the villago bastile, which happened to be in close proximity to a large sized and healthy hog pen, the stonch from which Gustave averred smelled to heaven. Patrick’ for £15,000 against the city of Omaha was brought into the legal field about as long ago as some of the old residents can remember. JUDGE OGDEN WILL REYIRE. nst Douglas e price puid on Financial Attractions of the Distriet Bench Aro Overshadowed by the Work. It now develops that there is another one of the judges of the district court who has tired of the labors of the bench and will step down and out, retiring to private life as soon as his term of office expires. This man is Judge Charles Ogden, who presides over one of the law divisions. Judge Ogden has an- nounced that he will not be a candidate for renomination, simply because the salary and the labors of the oftice do not go hand in hand. He declares that the salary of $2,500 ver year is too little, and that he can make more than double the amount by resuming the practice of law. Inthe criminal court only is a jury en- goged in the hearing of evidence ana there the case of the state against Robert Park is the attraction.
