COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Rumors of Gold Imports Btrengthened the Grain Market Materially. - WHEAT OPENED BELOW TUESDAY'S CLOSE Opening Trades In Corn Were at a Deoline Over the Previons Day's, but a Re- action Followed and the Close Was Strong. * ORICAGO, June 21.—A roport that #1,500,000 1n gold was engnged by New York banks for shipment by steamers sailing to England to- day converted n very wenk graln market into astrong one and wheat and corn both recovered from breaks they made in the first hour. Pro- visions wenkened on heavy receipts of hogs and closod at considerable declines sinco yesterday. In wheat the opening was about from e to %c lower than the closing figures of yesterday and with only slight fluctuntions prices de- clined e for July and %c for September, held rather steady and the closing was the samo as yesterduy for July and e higher for Septem- ber dolivery. Tho decline early was a con- tinuation of the wenkness which oxisted yesterday, helped along by tho weaker and _lower cable advices and tho report on the French crop in an English journal, which sald the dumage to the French crop had been overestimated, There was considers able selling at the start and a falr quantjty of wheat was bought out on the break. There was a good demand, however, at the decline and a sharp rally in prices followed. There was talk of o good huying of cash wheat here, but interested partivs were reluctant about giving any publicity to the transuctions. In- uiry at the banks brought the information what all the principal institutions would con- tinuo to carry the wheat they had already ad- vanced. ning trades In corn were at from ¢ to e loss, but the very favorable Washington weather crop bulletin, toge with bettor aavices from abroad and ased offerings, caused muny shorts to cover on the lnte up- tarn. Owing to this luck of support, the mar- ket soon sold off %c more. At the decline there were Increasing buyers on hund, sup= posed to como from the @ust, which started prices up, und the cstimate of receipts for to- morrow conng ight sided in helping prices, The market reacted from e 10 &e, ruled steady and at the close hud lost nothing. In some - quurters it was clatmed that the big buying orders, instend of coming from the pust, emanated from a local speculator, Chur- fey Wright. e fentire in onts was the buylng of July and selling of September at from e to 31, diffcrence. Prices were confined to ¢ range and the close was at a slight decline for July, but at about tho sume price as yesterday for Beptember. “Fiie proviston trade got another dose of the same medicine as_ yesterday. The hogs were ostod, not at 18,000 or 10,000 as estimuted, ut at 28,000 to 30,000, Tho Chicago Packing company and other packing interests aguin undertook to sell short ribs.” Agaln Wright's brokers sola the market off. " Then on the call Wright went in und bought fully 75,000 1bs. ot ribs. Lard was quiet and 6d oft” at Liverpool, Pork was quoted lower, but there was scarcely any business. Closing prices were close to tho bottom for the duy.
