AT THE MERCY OF A DESPERATE GANG Dravery of an Expross Messengor in a Time of Peril-Soverely Wounded He Re. malns Tras to His Trust— Exciting Incldents, Saxta Fe, N M., June 11.—[Special to Tur Bee] ight before last witnessed what in many respects was one of tho most remarkablo train robberies ever porpetrated by any band of outlaws. The California limited oxpross moving westward on the line of the son, Topeka & Santa Ko road. It reached & little town of 200 or 300 inhabitants in the southwostern part of Kansas, where thero were a depot and tele- graph office, about 1:20 a. m. The train stopping there a fow minutes the conductor went into the telograph oftice to attond to some businoss. While ho was thus engaged two highwaymen mounted the engine. Both were armed with Winchesters and covering engincer and firoman with their guns they commanded that the train bo moved on, throatoning immediate death if an outery should be made or their command disobeyed. About the same momenta brakeman going out the front door of the passenger coach was covered in the samo way by two other men. The train began to move. This being observed by the conductor he ran aftor it at tho top of his speed and got aboard before it was under full headway, Ho then learned after going 10 the front end of the train that it was in the hands of robbors. Being unarmed, he could do nothing. When the train reached a point about a hatf mile distant from the town it was stopped. ‘Tho 1 a pieco of open, level prairie land, The night was fair, the stars shone, but the moon could not yot be seen, though it becamo visible shortly aftor tho desperadoes disappeared, Tho passengers were ignorant of the condition of things till the train was stopped. They then soon learned what was going on. A number of shots were fired. Awful bursts of profanity were heard coming from tho robbers who, by threats in loud, determined, angry tones, were forcing engincer and fire man'to do their bidding. lyvery now and then Atehi- A Volloy of Snhots rang out upon the midnight air, sonding terror through the already fearstricken passen- gers. The leader of the bandits was occi- sionally heard to say, “Shoot down instantly the first man who sticks his head out of window or attempts 1o come out of a car. Vociferous cursing, swearing and throats ac- companied all his commands. He seemed to speak as one clothed with authority. The two men who had in the first instance mounted the engino compelicd the en- gineer and fireman to go with and assist them. The mail car, the aoor of which was open, cntered first, but finding it was not the car they were evidently looking for they quit it at once. They next went to the baggage car, which was closed and lorked. Thoy commanded the express agent, 12, C. Whittlesey, to open the door, threaten- ing to kill him iustautly if he refused. Ho refused. I'hercupon five or six shots were firod into_and through the north side of tho car with Winchesters, throwing heavy balls. Pausing a moment they demanded the agent again to open tho door, again threatening death if he refused. Ho again refused. Again five or six bualls were sent through the side of the car in quick succession. But the manon the inside continued to refuse. Demands to oven the door, refusals to do so, and volleys of shots, were fired till thirty-four bullets had been scnt into the car. The besicged hero still refused to open the door, though seriously wounded and bleeding profusely. Hisassail- ants seemed to realize ho was disabled, so they coerced the engineer and firemen into breaking down the door for them. This done, thoy entered. The faithful express agent lay helpless on the floor weltering in_his blood. The scene appears to have softened tho hearts and excited a touch of sympathy in the murderous naturcof the fiends who had shot him down. They lifted him up, placea himon a cot, gave him o drink of water and proceeded with theiwr search for valua- bles, as the wounded man even in his deepest extremity would not tell them where the coveted tre re could be found. They got about 1,000 in silver and some jewelry, the value of which I was unable to learn, Hiding the Swag. ‘While the missiles of death were flying thick and fast through the car the norvy, dauntless agent was busy hiding that which he knew the desperadoes wanted, He suce- coeded. He put $40,000 in such concealment they failed to get it. Tho silver they got was in a bag and quite heavy. They probably thought it ‘gold and thero- fore, doubtless, went uway feeling much elatod over their success. Isay such was doubtless their feeling, because about the time the silver was discovered one of ,their number on the outsile proposed going through the carsand making the passon- gers *'shell out,” but the fellow who had the bag of silver said, “No, we are all rignt now; no use to bother passengers.” On completing tho robbery they disap- peared in the darknoss in perfect com- posure, without the slightest noise or com- motion. The the trainmen then took their places and the engine and cars were backed to the station. 1 there got out of the passenger coach ana went to the baggaze - car to seo the express agent, He was yet on the cot where the highwaymen had laid -him. 1 later helped remove him from the car where he was shot to a car in an east-bound train « ing to his homoe in Kansas City. 1saw his gaping wound when the aoctor first on the ground removed his garments to examine it. He had been Plerced Through and Through in his left side by a large ball from a Win- chestor, It not then thought to be fatat by the physician, - He neither moaned, roaned nor complained, although he must have been 1 great pain, This was true even at the time others and mysolf were bending and twisting him in all sorts of shape while moving him from one car to another. How he escaped instantancous death is almost 8 marvel, Four or tive balls were fired through each end of the car and about twenty-Lwo through the side. T'he holes showed that about half the bullets entered between the middle and rear end, passing through it diagonally toward the front and about half eutered be- tween the middle and front end, passing through diagonally toward the rear. He was thus between two streams of bullets crossing each other diagonally. There must have been, I think, not less than six of the robbers—the two who mounted tho engine and went through the bapn.'xl{e bar, the two awho stood at the front end of front car, one on each side to assist those breaking the car if required and Lo provent suy one coming from front coach, and two others, one on each side of the train, going back and forth, firing shots GOUGH DON'T: PELAY: nom.cm. It consisted in A Wasto ot Ammunition, round 80 a8 to ter There was not a single passengor in the slightest degres anxious to get on tho oute sido and a twentieth of the firing done for that purpose was amply sufficient to keep them all inside. The foregoing are the facts asTin part saw and hoard thom and as I in part gathe ered them from inquiries made right on the ground immediatoly after the ocourrences took place, While tho foregoing docs nos stato all the facts, yot it wets forth the more important ones with as much correctness s it is possiblo to give them. To describo how pas- s feel and how they act whon on & ing held up at midnight and expect- ing every moment to soo their car enterod by highwaymen with drawn rovolvers, tells ing thom 1o throw up their hands, turn over thoir moncy, rings, breastpins, watches and other valuables, would extend this article boyond reasonable limits, T thereforo desist. Besidos the objection to doing 8o just named, clements of ludicrousness would bo brought to light which would, perhaps, bo fndelicato to contrast with the soriousness of the fores going narrative, in one and the same lotter. If no subscquont dovolopments shall dis close any material inaccuracies as to the statement of facts herein enumerated, then Mr. E. C. Whittlosey, the oxpress agent, may justly be called a he i the Dbest senso of tho word, nd it he rvivers his injuries, it seems to me it would be eminently proper ho should, by a testimonial of some kind, bo made to feel and know that tho manly courage and noble fidelity with which ha stood at his post and performod his duty, grandly welcoming death itself rather than prove rocreant t the trust and confidence reposed in him, has boen and is observed and appreciated. If, as aresult of such injurios he should die, then, it appears 1o me, his wifo and children, if such there be, should receive a testimos nial. If it be right to condemn and punish vico in its basest forms, thon it would seem equally right to recoguizo, commend and re- ward true horoism of the highoer order by whomsoever manifosted, even though it be an_humble, modest, unknown employe on o railroad car, J. With the singie exception of the Omaha Savings bank there was nothing in the vicinity of any of the savings banks of the city vesterday to remind one of thoe lively scenes of yesterday. At that institution the run still continued, and tho paying teller was kept busy during the forenoon paying out deposits. 1t was a noticeable fact that almost without exception thoe depositors who called for their money wero of the poorer classes, whose accounts averaged be. tween 50 and $100, whito very fow exceeded £200. It took about as much time to pay a smull aceount as a large one, but the total amount paid out during the forenoon did not begin to be as large as was paid out during the same length of time Tuesday, while the amount that went in through the receiv- mg tellor's window was far in cxcess of what it wus yestevday Thore was acarcoly any crowd about the bauk, and at no time during the day were there more thau thirty people in line. All were quict and orderly and there was no ex- citement. One woman 1 line fainted from the heat while standing in line outside in the sun, but ‘recovered quickly after being taken into the directors room, and after re- ceiving her monoy was ablé to go home without assistance. The first comer this morning was a_Bohemian woman, who took her place at the door at 7:80 o'clock and re- mained there until the bank opened, which was about a quacter of un hour before regu- lar banking hours. A numbor of frightened dopositors woro satisfied with th onal endorsement of officers or stockholders of the institution y contented with these, some- of apparent during the entire forcnoon ruu was constantly gotting lighter, and that toduy would see the lastof it. At noon the line had disappeared entirely, and there were but half a dozen people along the Yeosterday there were but few in- stances whero the money was immodiately redeposited by people actuated by the pres vailing craze, but today there were nearly, 1f not quite, & score of such cases, the Arst being a man who drew out $00. He sat down in the window and, after thinking over the matter for possibly flve minutes, walked up to the window of tho roceiving teller and handed it back, with the roquest that he be given credit for the deposit. e Chamberlain's Colie, Cholera and Diarrhma Romedy.
