HEGETS A JAG AND GOES ON THE WARPATH Three Officers Mave a Dificolt Time in Taking Him to the Lockop-A oroe and Desperate Straggle on the Street, John P. Tinley, a young lawyer of this city, created some excitement on North Main street yesterday afternoon. He had been drinking just enough to make him want to fight some one, and two colored men happened to be the ones closest at hand. He chased them up strect and into Price Gib- son’s saloon, driving blows in their direction which would have had telling effect if they had hit anything but the air. In the saloon there was a pitched battle, it requiring the combined strength of several men to pre- vent Tinley from braining his opponents with a chair. John Sandel, the driverc of the patrol wagon, soon reached the spot in response to a telephone message, closely fol- lowed by Deputy Marshal Fow In the melee Sandel fell with ‘Linley on top of him and would probably have been hurt had not Fowler held one of Tinley's fists. The pris- oner was at last overpowered and taken to the station, although on the rbad he became very fractious and not only refused to walk, but insisted on fighting the two officers and Deputy Marshal James Anderson, who had come to the rescue. nsiderable criticism, after the i r, of the action of Deputy Ma Fowler in using his fists on the prisoner’s throat in oraer to compel him to submit. For nearly two minutes he choked off Tinley's wind, and when he at last re- leased nim Tinley's face was purple and he could hardly walk the remaining short dis- tance 1w the jail. Ho soon recovered his breath, however, and used up & large amount of it in abusing vhe officers. A good many of the bystanders ventured the assertion that thr able-bodied officers ought to be able to pick up 4 man like Tinley and carry him off bodily without having to choke him into submission. But even in his second childishness the fast fading old man can fine much amusement and entertainment in the Encyclopedia, which has done so much to educate him and guide his steps through the seven stages of his life. The Britan- nica is full of beautiful and interesting pictures—pictures of birds and fishes and roptiles, things that children love to look at, and which please the old man, now that he has become a child again. Who knows what reveries float through hisbrain as he seeks again the stories and pictures he so loved as & child?” “Your young men shall sec vieions, and your old men shall aream dreams,” says the text, and the drveams of the old man are sure to revert to the many fields of knowledge and usefulness and beauty that have been pointed out to him by his faithful friend, the Encyclopedia Britannica.
