Ed Bailey, the prisoner charged with bure glary, scoms to be rather anxious to gef away from South Omaha, He asked for a speedy hearing yesterday, and wanted ta know if he waived examination if he could not be taken to Omaha. Bailey is a tall, ratherlight built man about 2 years of age. He claims to be & railroad man, but admitted to a Bee ro- porter that he had not done any work for bout three months. The trongest, and in bout the only evidence against Bailoy is that the watch stolen from Mr. Brayton's residence on Monday night was found in hi possession when ho was arrested. Whon asked by the reporter where he got the watch Bailey said that he got it in Washing- ton, D. C., and had carvied it ever since he left his wife, which was about seventeon months ago. “1 was never in South Omaha in my life before,” said Bailoy. “‘And 1 never saw ‘Kid) Blair until the night wo were arrestod. On Monday night 1 slept in a voom at the Northwestorn fiwuw in Council Bluffs and can prove it." The police have no doubt whatever but that Bailey is the right man. The watch of Mrs. Brayton is inscribed on the inside of the case as follows: “Presented to my wife Susie, Jan. 20th, 1880." On the outside are the initials “S. B." Bailey will waive a pre- liminary hearing when arraigned. My . Reed, tho lady who got o glimpse of the burglars Monday night, 2alled at the station house yesterduy to seo if sho could identify Bailey. Her opinion is that Bailey is one of the men, who was in the room, but not the one who held the revolver in her face. He is much taller, she thinks, than tho individuat who gave’ her such a fight, Blair is shorter thau_Bailey and answers the description given by Mrs, Reed, but so far he has cscaped arrest since goetting away from the Omaha police. Bailey was arraigned before Judge Fowler sterday afternoon, buv waived a prolimin- ary hearing and was bound over o the dis- trict court in the sum of £2,000. He will be taken to the county jail today. New Way of Cotlecting n Debt. The commission merchants in the wost wing of the Exchange building are having considerable sport over the ignorance dis- played by a certain lawyer from the rural districts. This lawyer, however, has been honored by his people in more ways than one, and for three terms he occupied a seat on the district beneh, A few days ago the lawyer had a bunch of cattle tosell. He owed a banker in a neighboring town F1,04 He shipped the cattle from his own station in the name of the banker he owed, there attaching a bill of lading to a draft, add drew on said banker for the full amount of his debt, thinking to square the books by so doing. Reaching South Omaha he received figures on what the cattle brought, and finding thero Wwits £220 more than the $1,046 coming, he de- manded the commission merchant who sola the cattle to fork over that amount. When he was refused, as the cattle were not con- signed to him, e became angry, and after waiting four hours for a telegram from the banker, left the yards in disgust. His novel way of paying a debt by drawing on his creditor for the amount he owed is what amuses the commission men. “St. Agnes’ Entertalnment. When the ladies of St. Agnes’ church undertake to do anything they invariably make a success of it, and their dinner, sup- per and entertainment given at Blum's hall yesterday and last evening w no exception to their past reputation. At noon time a great many persons dropped in and dined with them and av the supper hour the number was far greater. All who purchased tickets for a meal wero given a return coupon and allowed to enjoy the even ing entertainment without extra charge. The affair was gotten up by the ladies for the benefit of the city poor and a neat sum s realized for their efforts. Both Father rity and Father McDeavitt assisted in making all v weleome, The hall was chuvmingly decorated with flags, byytin and flowers, and the stage piesenfe Ag especially attractive appea Among those who took part in the cntertainment were: Mrs., W. Being assured by Ch Beckett that Lacey was still “on the hill," the woman lefy, happy in the knowledge that in three brief days she would again enjoy the gentle companionship of her own dear John, Paving on J Street, The work of paving the west side of wenty-fourth street from A to J streets will be commenced ina few days.
