i , | ‘ CHAT WITH THE BOXERS The Oity's Gun Olubs and a History of the Same, THE STATE SPORTSMEN'S TOURNAMENT The Roudster Club's June Meeting—Whis- perings of the Wheel—Breezes from the Ball Fleld-Sports Afleld und Miscell otes. ous Oscar ( sailing under the cognomen of the “Omaha Kid,” and who has been cutting a rather wide swath in western pug circles recently seoms to be absolutely unknown in this city unless he is the young man who forme worked for the Peycke brothers and for a few months as Danny Daly’s sparring partner. Whoever that youngster was he was very clever, and evinced all the symp- toms of & hard nut to crack. Still there is bus little evidence that they are one and the same and it may be that Gardner's selection of the nom de guerre under which he fights was prompted simply by his knowledge of the stiff character of this city’s pu product. Be that as it m Kid has demoustrated that he has tivst class stuff in him and long will evidently be knocking at the door of some of the first rate little fellows. Last Monday night before the St. Paul Pheenix club the Kid was pitted for six rounds against Solly Smith, the conqueror of Danny Daly and Johnny Van F , and the man who has on some sort of a match with George Dixon, the champion feather- weight of the world. Just what young Gardner did on this occasion told in the following extract from the Pioneer Pre: *It was a great surprise to Smith backers. It a big surprise to the crowd. It was considerable of a surprise to the Kid himself, and when the gong rang at the close of the contest he was taken up on the shoul- ders of the enthusiastic crowd end given three eers for his pluck and ¢ rness. It was re- markable exhibition of rapid sparriug. There ‘was no dallying at any time. ither. man was afraid and the audience was treated to one of the cleverest goes ever seen in this city, It was thought the Kid would act en- tirely on the defensive. The idea was that he was to get a geod purse if he managed to ay the six rounds, Accordingly all he had todo was to keep away from Smith, and let him do the work. Instead of this the Kid surprised bhis backers and really did more work than Smith. He brought all his cleverness into play and it was often effective. Smith entered the arena with an air of confidence, and appeared o think he would have no trouble disposing of the Kid in a round or two; but after the second round he changed his mind and became cau- tious. The betting, or what there was of it, was entirely in Smith's favor. Few there were who dreamed that the Kid would last even three rounds, as Smith's cleverness was well known, but he fooled them all and wis there good and strong at the end of the sixth, having bested Smith at every turn shroughout the entire bout. And_ Solly Smith is the man Zick Abra- hams has brought across the contiuent to taail Champion Dixon's colors in the dust. He'd betier tage him back to the slope, for he'll make littfe more th ine bag for the doughty colored bo, Solly in his setto with Owen Harne; Orleans novice, the night of th 3 ud’ made just such an es- timate then, for the Crescent City lad had all the best of it, both as to ring generalship and points scoved. It has finally been settled that Boston Billy Smith and Jack Dempsey will come to- gether on the Wt of June 30 before the oney Tsland Athletic club, Since the riolis one's conquest over Australi ‘Williams he has been throwing flowers at himself, and the Coney Island peonle had about_despaired of “sceing his match with the Nonpareil clinched. The Crescent City club of New Orleans tacked on an_extra thovsand to Judge Newton's $6,000 purse, and Smith gobbled up the bait something after the fashion that the first trout of spring goes for o fly. He ha: nted, however, and yielded 10 the judge’s ratiocinitive p and at last it has been writ in the books that the battle will come off at the big cottage by the sea as pep the original schedule, fora purse of 6,000, and on the last night of the rosy wmonth of June. What about the outcome? That is o pre- sumptuous query to put. Billy Smith nas surely shown himself to be the peer of all latt fighters in hi and Jack Dempsey hus scen e knew no equal. But when you put this and that to- vether it a horse of dif- ferent color, When the Nonp: speckled specimen of antc mwana, Bob Fiwzsimmons, his my of friends said that he had gone back prior to that illfated occasion. But I don't believe it That his old time supreme confidence. in his own invincibility re i a sovere when braggart La Blanche knocked him out, however, s believe, ‘That was the first defeat in a half hundred battles and it ull but broke his heart. On the night he met Kitz, physically, I think he w as good, if not botter, than ever before, barriug a slight adominal disarrangement at the time His general makeup was flawless. ‘That he con- clusively proved by the remarkable fight he made—the longest and the best that has ever been made on these shores uguinst the lanky monstrosity from the under world, ‘here were thirtecn rounds of it. Maher, the much lauded Hi- bernian giant, quit in eleven. and phenome- nal Jim Hall was knocked mto a cocked hat in less thun four. On what lines, then, is it claimed that Dempsey had gone buck? iru- If the Nonpariel has retrogaded, it h. taken place since that historic night, J was great then, and there are none so bold as to dispute and ey toproverit, Iwill admit, though, that since’ then there is o strong likehood that Jack has been on the decline. The sting of those two downfalls lefy the most IncMaccablo marks of the terrvible work they wrought. He went into retire- ment briised in baby and mind, and if i tales are true he did more to augtzent than mmeliorute his his woful condition in his manner of living for veral years there after, But now they say that he is re- habilitated, gone through some sort of a reformation, and that the Nonpareil of years agois the Nonpareil of today—that “Jack Dempsey is redivivus, If this be so then 1 am inclined to ugitate my think tank to the ex- tent that Boston, Billy Mysterious Council Blufts Boyle Smith is in for a decidedly rude reception on the night of Junc 80. If 1t be otherwise, why then 13, B, M. C.
