IN AN ABANDONED SHAFT How Two Prospectors Tumbled Ontoa For- tune in Colorado, | RESULT OF A FALL IN THE NIGHT Romantic But Real Story of the Turn that Led Two Young Vermonters Into Wealth Beyond thelr Fondest Expectations, The sunsets of the Rockies are a house- hold word among tourists, and it is next to unnecessary to deseribo them in th story. About the middle of October, 1880, when the setting sun was gilding the mountain peaks, two young men started from the town of Buena Vista, Col., across the Grand Park. Both were undoubtedly prospectors, evidenced by their riveted duck suits and the gunny- sucks they carvied on their shoulders, loaded with isions for their camp. As the ruck into the park the sun was sotting just above “Mount Yale," and was reflected in roseate hue on “Buffalo Peaks. " “Gilbert,” said the youn the two, “that beats old Vermont, does it not? “Yes, indeed,” replied the other, even such seenery as that has littlo feet on me this evening.” The two men were old college who, like thousands of othe drifted to Colorado during the Leadville excitement, and, by dint of practical ex- { perience, had found that gold and silver were not to be found broadeast, but that only by the use of pick and shovel and the blast of “‘wiant powde Gilbert Graydon, the elder, had received his education at Dartmouth college, Ver- mont, had graduated with honor and dis- tinetion, but an insatiable desire to se new countries had taken him to Colo- rado, In 1879, ur cover th the “but chums, had ed on by the Leadville dis- ‘tenderfoot” as he was, he had done fairly well as a mining engineer. He wrote his friend, Digby IFoster, in glowing terms of the country, and the two had been for some time together prospecting in the Saguache mountains. So far their efforts had not been crowned with success, as the claim they had already worked the assessment on had yielded nothing but low grade mineral. Such were their prospects as they neared the foothills of Mount Yale and the long shadows of the mountain peak ne creeping down the “benches.” Gilbert,” said young Dighy, “we are going to get caught in the dark if we don't make better time than we are doing now and I would hate to get lost on the trail, as ['ve only got two matehoes | with me and these guiches look all ever fear,” responded Gilbert, I think I know my way well enough, matehes or no matches: and they would be of little use, anyhow, as the timber is toodamp after last week's rain to ve as fuel. ily had the words left his lips when € . who was in the lead, dis- appeared as if the carth had swallowed him up. Dighy Foster stopped aghust, not knowing whether to advance. Remembering h two matches, he struck one and peered into the darkness dhead. The mouth of an old abandoned shaft met his gaze. It had been ¢ cealed by the underbrush and rubb and a smothered groan met his ears. " he cried. The answer came 11 right. old fellow; no 13 but I think I've fallen twenty-five or thirty feet. The camp can’t be more than a quarter of a mile from here. Push on and get a lantern, and make your guide marks as you go. t that “old spare bucket rope, und come back as quickly as you can, for I don't care to lie here all night. Digby started away on a run, but did not negleet, in the almost Bgyptian darkness, to mark 1 way as he went, He reached the camp, and providing himself with a fresh supply of matches, a lantern, the rope, and a flask of whisky, he hastened back to the shaft. He finully reached the spot, where his friend lay buvied, and perhaps seriously injured. The rays of the lantern cast their glow down the old abandoned shaft, as he peered anxiously into it. “*Ah!is that you, Dig?" cried a voice from the bottom. *Thank God, you are here; it seemed an age, but then you know I'm somewhat bruised up and shocked by my fall. Did you bring the rope?” he added. “Here it is,” said Digby, as he lowered the old bucke “Take a turn of it around that old stump, and just brace yourself,” shouted Giibert. “This old "~ shaft is full of ridges, and I can use my feet half the way up.” In a few moments he was standing once more by the side of his friend, very pale in the dim lantern light, but col- lected. “I brought something up in my pocket,” said h “After you left and T recovered myself I began to grope avound for something to strike our last I didn't know for surve but I used to be able to tell good mineral in the dark.” “You had better get back to camp and rest up,” said Dighy, “‘and we can exam- ine it by daylight." “It's not the best kind of light, but let's look at it anyhow he replied. Then taking out his jack-knife he began to whittle the little specimen he held in his hand. *“Ruby silver, by all that's holy,” he gasped. ‘*‘Seo 1t bleed,” he added, as he pierced it with the point of his knife. * know this mineral, Dig, and if there's any kind of a lead our fortunes are made Well, let's get back to camp and rest up, and we can come down in the morn- ing,” suid Digby, ever anxious about his friend’s condition. **We'll leave a mark s0 that we can’t miss it, and kick all the rubbish over the hole that you can, so that no other prospector may fall into it and gain what profit theve may be in the shaft."” The camp was reached, and soon the two were wrapped in slumber, Th rose at sunup, and took a breakfast. “Hurry up,” said bert. 1 am anxious to solve the mystery of my last night's disastor.” Breakfast finished the two started for the scene of th s experience of the previous night, fully equipped with ON’T HESITATE. You know the old saying, “he who nhesitutes is lost.” It certainly applies with great force, in some things. When you know vou are right, don’t hesitate to say i when you know what you want, don't hesitate to DEMAND IT. When you go to buy abottle of CARTER'S L1TTLELIV- ER PILLS, don’t hesitate Lo suy you want CC-A-RT-E-R--S on’t hesitote to see that you get “‘C-A-R-1-1-R--S,” and don’t hesitate to refuse anything of- fered to you ns ‘‘sawmo us A-R- T-E-R--8"" or **just as good as *C-A-1t T-E-R--8’ "—There is nothing so good a8 “C-A-R-T-E-R--8.”" They never fail, Don’t hesitate to say so when imitations and frauds are offered to you. Don’t hesitute to demand the genuine Caie TER'S LIrTLe Liver PUiLs, A POSITIVE CURE FORSICK HIEAD- ACHLE, Small Dose Small Pill Small Pric { and the'tinal ** | guarantee all that they might need in the dovelop- ment of the new found claim, 'lhl-y arrived without diffieulty at the spos, and found it just as they had left it “In the first place,” said Gilbert, “let's cut down that young cottonwood and lay it across the mouth of the shaft as a support for the ropes, Gilbert desconded first, Dighy holding the slack of the rope, which was over forty-five foet long. At last, when about thirty feet had been paid out, Gilbert shouted: “All right: I'm at the bottom; wait a few minutes.” Digby stood in in- tenso expectancy, when suddenly he heard his partner shout, “*Eureka! We've got a teue vein of vuby silver, old man. Our fortune's made: wait till 1 come up with the specimens.” "T'was but a few moments ere ho reached the top, then, gasping more from emotion than from the exertion of climbing out, he said: “Look at that for boauties, and there's a two-foot lead. Oh! Dig, old bo we'll seil this ovt in Buena Vista and get baek to God's countey. U'm sick and tired of this hand-to-mouth life: let's make the most of this.” Those who have suffered the privations of a pros- pecetor’s life, and know so well their hopes and disappointments, can woll ao- preciate the feclings of the two parties as they stood looking at that mineral. Good hard work the new found property did not begin until the follow- ing day, as proj ons had to be made to sufticiently develop the claim, ang to seo whether the vein continuous o not: but at the expi of two wecks faithful work, Gilbert Graydon and Digby Foster knew that they could foly o to Buena Vista und place their property on the market, It did not take long to find an eastern purehaser, who willingly took a half in- terest in bebalf of the company he repro- sented, and who paid all expenses for fu- ture development, ete., leaving the othor half interest to the original dis- coverers, The claim did not disappoint them, as it is today one of the most pay- ing fiosino veins in the Saguache rango. Its original owner was never heard from, but it had probubly been abandoned for lack of funds to work it, the fate of so many good claims in the same section. Gilbert Graydon and Dighy Fostor re- turned to their Vermont homes richer, both in experience and this world's goods, and are today the leading law firm in a prominentzVermont city. Such was the actual history of two young prospectors. ety s The plain truth 1s good enough for Hood's Sarsaparilla. No need of embelishment or sensationalism. Hood's cures, BEAUTIFUL TO SEE, on was on ome ot President and Clevelan utiful to see” is the free transla- the name of the pluce where President and Mrs. Cleveland aro to make their summer home. This is the original name. It is better known to the present generation as the Middle- ton hou Oviginally there were 101 acres in the estate but now there aro only forty-five. This is the most beauti- fully wooded land to be found about the suburbs of Washington. A long, wind- ing carringeway leads up to the old- fashioned entrance After ascending four or five steps the visitor finds him- self on a small porch, from which a low door leads into the corridor. Immedi- ately to the left of the door as you enter is a flight of steps to the next floor. There is a double arch at the foot of the stairs ornamented with fretwork, one of the arches forming what might be called an entrance to the staircase and the other leading to the dining room and thence to the conservatory. The long porch at the rear of the houss commands a magnificent view of Wash- ington, which lies below it, and on a eloar d ay the Potomace may be seen for miles. 'The apartment upon which Mrs. Cleveland expects to bestow the most at- (muwu is the music room. It is half circular in shape and will, it is said, be finished in white and gold. A door leads from this into the library, where Mr. Cleveland will probably ‘spend a good deal of his time, as those who know him do not expect that he will stop working even during the summer “vacation Belvoir only four miles from the white house, and this will enable the president to reach the executive man- sion in about twenty-five minutes. Another reason which is sald to have influenced the choice of this place as a summer home is the fact that this region is full of squirrels, and the presi- dent during his summer sojourns at Red Top,” which is only a short dis- tance away, was fond of going into the woods with his gun and a couple of friends similarly equipped. ‘T'he most important reason of all, however, for the sloction of this place was the fact that it was just suited to the necds of Baby Ruth on account of its extensive grounds and pure atmosphere, There an abundance of shade trecs and a play house is to be built for Miss Ruth's spocial benefit on a little knoll immedi- ately south of the house. The place will not be ready for occupancy for sev- eral weeks The mansion was built by one of the Key family away back in the last cen- tury with bricks imported from Europe, as the brickmaking industry was not yet developed in this country. [Franeis Scott Key, author of *The Star-Spangled Banner,” spent most of his youth there, and his name still stands carved in one of the window frames in the front hall, S al presidents have made Belvoir their summer home, including Van Buren, Tyler and Buchan: S - North Galveston Fish Nowrn GALyestoN, Tex., April fishing at North Galveston is now the business pleasure occupation.
