HAWAII AND CANADA MAY BE TAKEN IN | Alleged Evidence that Mr, Cleveland is Not Unfavorable to the Union of the San, wich Islands With the United States—Some Opinions. CHICAGO, T11., March 6. gram to THE BEE. | ~A Washington spe- cial says: The representatives of the Hawaiian provisional government will, earliest favorable moment, cull the attention of the administration to the pending treaty of annexation. They do not expect that the treaty will withdrawn. Of course, Mr. Cleveland may withdraw it from the senate as he withdrew the reciprocity treaties with outh American states which President Arthur had negotiated when he entered upon his office eight years ago. One of the Hawaiian commissioners said yesterday, however, that he did not anticipate such action. The fact that the treaty was not considered owing to democratis opposition in the senate was not to be interpreted, in his opinion, as indicating that the democratic party would oppose annexation as a policy. It simply meant that it desived more’ time to eonsider it, and that the demo preferred to have the islands annexed they are to be annexed at all, under a democratic rather than a republican ad- ministration. Moreover, there some reasons for thinking that Presic Cleveland is disposed to have a commis- sion sent to the islands to make a thorough investigation and report the condition of affairs before a final decision Il be reached as to the policy the present administration will recommend. The arrival of Princess Kaiulani, the so-called heiress-apparent to the throne of Hawaii, is not likely to have any marked effect or influence her Tk guardian of the young princess, Mr. Davies. said one of the Hawaiian commis- sion, is ‘‘an English fanatic,” who seems to be very much elevated by the fact that he has us a ward a princess of the | Sandwich islands. The commissioner had called upon him in New York and found him exceedingly supercilious and arrogant in manner.” He undoubtedly has made a grave mistake in the inter- sts of his ward in coming here to America, especially in exhibiting his of- :nsive British manners. He has given emphasis to the fact that those who are opposing annexation are acting in Brit- ish interest. Recent statements made here by the direet representative of the deposed queen, Mr. Neuman, would seem to indi- | cate that he will not make a very earnest effort in her interests. He w ked whether or not the queen expected a restoration, and he answered most em- phatically that he expected the island would pass sooner or later into the | hands of the United States. It is evi- dent that his object here is to secure the best terms possible with this country. The views of Mr. Cleveland himself have not been expressed on the subject of Hawaii, neithersince he was president nor before. The representatives of the Hawaiian government, however, point to & mere passage in his message in 1889, as indicating that he believes the ulti mate destiny of Hawaii is to be a part of the United States Some of those who are in the im- mediate surroundings of Mr. Cleveland, notably Don M. Dickinson, are carnestl talking in favor of annexation. Mr. Dickinson, who by reason of his residence near the border in Detroit, has become very much interested in Cananian matters, has expressed the opinion that before the Cleveland ad- ministration is ended a movement will be inaugurated which will inevitably re- sult in the annexation of Canada. M i some to be an en- thusiastic annexationist and there are many eminent democrats who will not fail “to call the attention of Mr. Cleve- land to the fact that all the annexations of territory which have ever been made to the United States, except that which resulted from the purchase of Alaska, have been accomplished under demo- cratic administrations, and that the party which has opposed them is the one “which has generally met with national defeat. e Brace Up is a tantalizing admonition to those who at this season feel all tired out, weak, without appetito and discouraged. DENISON, Tex., March 6.—[Special Telegram to THE BEE.|The whole of northern Texas is agitated over the dis covery of a petrification in the Guada- loupe mountains., The discovery is now in o glass caso at Gainesville and it will be brought here for identification as the remains of the famous Bruce Younger, by a sister vesiding heves Last November a man named William Adr- heart went with three associates to soek and fortune in the mountainous region of southern New Mexico, just north of tLe Texas line In the course of their explorations the party came upon a cave in what is known “dark canon,” @ place desti tute of highways, apparently unknown to anyone excepting those residing in the immediate vicinity. In the cave was found a human body. Thirteen days were consumed by the men, who worked incessantly, before the body could be taken to the light. While the fossil lay in the room at Gainesviil Mrs. John T. Biflle, the wife of a reput ble stockman of that place, had occasion to view it. She looked but a moment when she called those present side and informed them that it was be yond doubt the famous outluw's body. Mrs, Biffle is a cousin to the Younger and 80 positive was she that she telegraphed Frank James, a ssociate, and the remaining Younger relatives to come and view it. From them no answer has yet been received. Close by the body, when it was found lay a gun’ of rathier ancient type and supposed to be loaded, This she identi- fied as Bruce's gun. In connection with these facts sho related the following story “About fifteen yea ficers were hot after the James and Younger boys, Bruce Younger left his home in Missouri and took refuge in a ave in the Guadaloupe mountains in southern New Mexico. A negro whom the Youngep family had raised went with him :uu{ regularly carrvied food and ammunition to th wve and she and Bruce's sister visited him. On one occa sion the negro made his regular visit to the bandit, but he never returned, and from that time nothing has been heard or seen of Bruce Younger.” By close observation a_gunshot wound is clearly distinguishable in the right side directly under the arm.
