ART STUDENT LIFE IN PARIS What Ambitions Americans Encounter in Their Pursuit of the Beautiful, IMPRESSIONS OF ONE WHO HAS BEEN THERE J. G. Borglam's Historieal Masterplece Sog- l gested by Wiiliam ¥ Prescott's “La Noehe Tri Pletures He Will Have on Exhibition at the World's Fair, “An artist should paint as he talks,” was said by one of theold masters, and its epi grammatic force is constantly being seen among the modern wiclders of brush and palette. not only here in America, but on the other side of the pond 1. Whistler's ntle Art of king Enemies" showed that that eccentric genius can write as weil as he p and Tadema has written one o two brochures that make perfectly charming rending. Holman Hunt has done much ad mirable talking and writing and others of " t1e sume school illumined the literary | | a8 w ts. hiave page as well as painted themselves into th hearts of art lovers the All this, however, is raiser” for recor “ ple resentative of Tue Bee Gurtu rlum, who days v visit to three the art old wor While Mr. Borglum is stilla young man | hie talks well upon a multipiicity of subjects but naturally to best purpose upon those art subjects which have been his wuking and his sleeping dreams for years. And, what is quite as pleasant 1o record, he pamts as well as he talks The three years Mr. Borglum spent in Paris, Madrid, Toledo and in Holland pursuing his art studies have been fruitful ones to him, and he comes back to his friends a cosmopoli tan, in bright contrast to the provincial who knew little when he left America except what he_ had learned amid the fields and flowers of southern California. But associa tion with Julian, Bouguereau, and active participation in the work of the best of the modern sculptors and painters of the old world have done much to broaden the horizon of this gifted young painter, who is destined to bring American art iuto more prominence than ever before. rrounded by sketches made during his rs of study in the continental cities, covering nearly all of the of th room in which this in was. aceorded, with hundreds of unmounted photographs showing details of arches, entresols, col- unms, taken from the Gran- ada, of churches and palaces which are the wonder of the world. pure examples of Moorist urchitecture, strewn about in artis- tic disoraer, Mr. Borg told Tue Bes of his work in Paris Must Unlearn to Learn, “The American art student in about the hardest time possibl takes him a very Jong time to und been done before reaching Paris,’ Mr. Borglum. ‘“America is a country, and I can say very cor that I come back a better when 1 left, but we ¢ much along urt lines before we will standing in the art court of the world. Of course, there are Americans who are famous painters and sculptors, but they are quite the exception. “I presume it is the ambition of every young American artist to havea picture in the Salon, either the Champs de Mars or the Champs sces. He works with this pur- pose in vie elf, lives in dirty. illy-ventilated house on the fifth or sixth floor, takes one or two meals a day. his pocket money happens to be, sy i sh in hiring models and \is~ teacher, so that he mav +4n painting a picture that will be #_.ble to the hanging committee of the Salon: And then, when he gets his name 1 the Salon catalogue, he comes back to Amer- ica a full-fledged painter, and is ready to exact fabulous sums of money for portraits, land- scapes, and figures on the ground that he ‘was in “he Salon. 'While 1 do not, by any means, despise the Salon, for I have been honored with having ictures in both Paris Salons,as well as ha g my work in bronze highly spoken of by the connoisseurs, still the Salon does not make a painter by a great sight, and some frighttully poor work gets into the exhibi- tions every year. Foryears the gentlemen of Champs de” Mars refused to give the gold medal to Corot on the ground that his figures ‘were not true to life. Yet Corot demon- strated that he was one of the greatest artists of the century, and of course is hon- ored today as he deserves to be. his shows that even a director of the Paris Salon may err sometimes. The Salon is only useful in that it brings your work into close proximity with your neighbor's, and under the best possible conditions, so that study is made very easy, but beyond this I think the value of the Salon is largely overestimated. Still, 1 shall have something in the Salon of the Champs de Mars every year, because I mean to be a painter of no particular place, although California will undoubtedly be my home, for there are dramatic possibilities for the artist in that country found nowhere else in America. It is full of veauty, of n- spiration to the person who cares to search for it, and as I am passionately fond of all oatdoors I believe my best work can be done upon the shores of the Pacitic Details of the Student's Life, Passing to a study of the life of an art stu- dent in the gay capital of France, Mr. Borg- lum sententiously remarked: “A Paris art student is about as bad as a medicat student. I have scen things done in Julian's studio, which ~ is the dirtiest place in Paris, that an American student would shudder at: yet nothing is thought of it. Malo and female models, when not pos- ingg, occupy the time in_telling risque stories and behaving like a lot of semi-lunatics. Instead of retiring to their rooms after the artists are through work, they will stop and chat with one another, little caring for the propricties that ought to govern in such places, forgetful of thew scanty clothing, | oblivious to everything. Of course, the the form of the model and n becomes accustomed to the freedom the studio and falls into the ways | of thosc who are his associates. It is a life of absolute freedom; you are an art student, and that covers a muititude of short- comings. The best art students in Paris are the Americans. They are hard workers, conscicntious, never forgetful that they are gentlemen, und they are universally esteemed for their good qualities by those who direct them in the minute details of art As for living in Paris, outside of clothing and cabs, it is quite as dear as in America. Butter like that one cats here sells from 40 to 60 cents a pound; good beef steaks, not horse sted are worth 83 cents to 50 cents, depending upon the cut, while rents are quite as high. The person who tells you that he can live just as cheap in Paris as in any of the big Aerican cities is mistaken. Woolen goods are cheaper, but you have to pay just as much for a shirt, collar or pair of cuffs as here in Omaha, Painter of the “Return of Spring," *‘Bouguereau is one of the most compan- | fonable men I ever met. He is short and fat, with a jolly good-natured face, and he comes into Julian's studio once a week to ®ivo lessous in painting from the nude. He chats with you about your work, sug- gests 8 bit of color here or a redue- tion of color there, and instead of impressing you with his eminent ability as 1o the great and ouly Bouguereau he really appeals to youas u friend. Heis politeness ersonified and one of the brightest lights u the galaxy of great names,” Then Mr. Borglum spoke of his visit to Spanish Toledo and the exceptional advan- tages accorded him by the priests in charge of the famous cathedral in permitting him 0 sketeh the interior, and even the copying of & picture of Don Tomas, one of the caions | in charge of the “room of justice,” and this sketch Mr. Borglum will have on exhibition at the World's fuir i conjunction with his well knowns “Cowboy” study and the “Poiut of Pines" at Monterey, owned by a New York collector, together with two bronzes—oue a study of & horse and Indian, the other an Indian group—both of which received “honorable mention” in the Salon of the Champs de Mars. world over, “curtain a rep- | purely a 1sant chat had with Mr. John | was in Omah: few s father after centers of the | cars spent in Paris has and it | said wonderful cientiously American tha yet to learn have any | theircries | hasy | twenty-eight But the picture which be speat two years on, and which he hed hoped would be his crowning work, will not be exhibited at the World's fair, the size being entirely too large for_the spaco assigned American artists. The tidings spread from man to man that the frame work could not be raised. All means of re- treat were cut off. ely hope was left. Each thoughv only of his own life. Thus the second gap was passed over to be repeated at the third and last gap—and here the artist begins his picture, Prescott thus describes the scgne ‘The first y of the morning was now coming over the waters.
