GOD 1N Interesting Proceedings at the Monthly Meet- fng of the Omaha Ministerial Union. REV. T. J. MACKAY REPLIES TO REFORMERS THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS l‘ e Would Not Have the Bible la the Public Schools and Would Dread the Results— God Not a Movable P Farniture, The attitude of Protestant churches to- ward the public schools of the United States was the principal topic for discussion at th regular monthly meeting of the Omaha Min isteral association, held Monday in the Kountze Memorial Lutheran church. At the mecting in January the same sub. Ject sed considerable warmth on account of the rather unlooked for stand that some of the brethren took. Rev. Dr. Hellin o the First Baptist church, Rev. C. G Sterling of the Lowe avenue Presbyterian church few others stoutly in favor of placing the bible in the public schools and even went so far as to say that if the time had c when all religious training was to be omitted from the publi school cwrriculum then they were in favor falling back on the parochial ouly remaining plan by which generati could b heid back ruinous Llizht of atheism Rev. T. J. Mackay of All Saints Episcopal church took a positive stand in favor of the present plan of conducting the public schools, and then and there snnounced it as his in teution 1o present a paper on the subject in opposition to the sentiments he had heard expressed by the brethren who seemed to think that public schools without the bible in them would work the ruin of the coun The reading of Rev. Mackay's paper w jooked forward to with keen inteiest by the ministerial brethren, A number of them were in accord with him and it was expected that there would be some rather warm a gument after the paper had been presented His Own Views of Schools. “The subject of education is what is at- tracting the attention of all thoughtful men today."” run Rev. Mackay's paper. ‘‘Among religious people much alarm is expressed be cause of the absorbing importance of what are termed ‘secular studics.’ The complaint i8 thut so much time is devoted to these sec- ular studics that the children have but little time left for religious education, so called, or the siudy of the bible The speaker said he approuch this part of the subject first as a citizen of the state and then asa clerryman. He had no antipathy toward private or parochial schools until they were made the entering wedge for the purpose of destroying the present of public edu cation, and then he felt it his duty cry halt. He was in hearty sympathy with the higher schools of the various churches, such as Brownell Hall, here in Omaha, conducted under the direction of his own denomination beeaus @ such schools did net come in con flict with the public schools. He had no fault to find with the Cathohe people on account of their peculiar views with regard 10 the essity of maintaining parochial schools. If they thought that was the only plan to pursue with safety they certainly had o perfect right as citizens of a free coun- try to estab and _maintain parochial schools, The loss would be to the Catholic people, who failed to take advantage of the facilities afforded by the public schools, but if they thought that the advantage of hav- ing their children educated under religious influences veculiarly their nwn over balanced the additional expense that the parochial schools entailed upon them there was no ro0m, he thought, for Pretestants to quarrel ith ‘the Catholics about the matter. , “It has beem a matter of surprise to me, ‘howeyer,” said the divine, “being a for- ielgner myself, how any thinking parent who must know the disadvantage under which he labors on account of his foreigm training should desire to perpetuate the same trouble in his own chiliren and compel them to associate with their own kind as if they vs to remain Irish or German citi- zens instead of Americans.” The speaker them undertook to answer the charge that the public schools are god- less schools. He held that the present s, tem was the best and only possible system of public schools that could succeed in a government like ours. State Must Remain Neutral. “Ina government guaranteeing to every ecltizen civil and religious libercy,” said Mr. Mackay, “it is manifestly impossible for the state to prescribe a religious education which shall be satisfactory to all the various religious organizations, Should the time ever come when all Christian churches shall agree upon the essentials of the Chris- tian then relig 0 y become a art of the curriculum of our public schools, R smidl then the # 1st perforce main- tain a policy of neutrality and confine 1ts ef- forts solelv to the training of the moral faculties of its rising citizens. The state must continue in this neutral position or abandon the field entirely to the parochial schools of the various denominations. 1f the latter plan is to be adopted then there will be no security that the work of education will extend to the whole | opulation. In such a case what would {:‘«\me of the ehildren of those who elect to remain outside of all churches! If the state shouid attempt toassist the various churches in their educational work then there ygould be 1o end to the difficulty that would aris It would be ten times greater than the dis- satisfaction that has been brought about by the governwent undertaking to assist the <hurches in the education of the American Indians. This dissatisfaction and jealousy has grown to such an extent that several of the leading churches have recently refused to accept any further aid from the government for their Indian schools. It was caused by the apparent inequality of the distribution of funds. The Komau Catholic church re- ceived nearly 500,000 annually, nearly twice as much us all the other denominatiors com. bined. Imagine the confusion that would arise if the state should attempt to dis- tribute funds for the support of parochial schools.”” Faribault System Must Fail. The speaker held thut the plan of Bishop Jreland, in what is known asthe Faribalt scheme must fail for a like reason. To adopt Bishop Ireland’s scheme would be to wipe out the grand publie school system of the United States he speaker beld that the argument that peaple who sent their children to parochial schools were obliged 10 pay a double tax for educational purposes was fallacious. They were not obliged to pay double. They puid only one tax for educational purposes; the other was a voluntary religious con- tribution. Tt was just as much a religious coutribution or offering as was the amount paid for pew rent or for the poor and the cry of “double tax” would meetwith no sympathy from the American people. ‘Those who wanted schools more in harmony with their own peculiar religious views than were the public schools might have them if they wished, but let them have them at their OWR COst, Mot b the expense of the public. What is & School. {Does the exclusion of the bible from the public schools stamp them as godless schoolst Not necessarily. One brother has remarked that he took his children out of the public schools when they took God out of them. Is it possible that he considers God as & movable piace of furniture! 1 can- not think of God as standing apart from any of the beautiful relationships of life. T tendency of the age is to widen the sphere ‘of religfon $0 that it will include the whole of Mfe. We would not call a fac- tory operated by Christian wen a godless factory becanse there were no prayer meet- held in it. A wan is not necessarily a less man because he does not keep a bible his desk at his place of business. Why, then, should the public schools be called less because the bible is not tuught there! iy not secular studies be pursued in a moral and religlous spirit! As a matter of fact our public schools do teach morality. It may be said that morality is not religion, but _3tis & very large part of it, nevertheless. 1f Ihave to choose between bare morality and veligion without morality, I will take former every time. That the state re- 1e and a were schools as th the rising from the would endeavor to Godle alizes its duty as & teacher of morality there £an be po question. It provides laws for the Buppression of vice and immorality; it pre- vents the circulation of obscene literature; it upholds the virtues of truth and honesty restricts where it cannot abolish intempes ance and lust and rew. heroie by promotions to places of honor. " The speaker said he did not lose sight of the fact that the effectiveness of morality depended largely upon religion. What he wanted to show was that there was no con- flict between morality and religion, but that both were elements of strength in society He thought that it would be unwise to i duce the bible into the public schools for the reason t people not agree as to how should interpreted or empl the school Religion could be taught in_the schools without the bible. He would rather have his taught from a plain ate- chism their duties toward God and man than to run the risk of placing them under an in- competent teacher with the bible in his hand. it be d in Was Generally Approved. The address was very long, but intensely interesting, and when the reading was com- pleted there was @ general approval ex- pressed from nearly all present. Even the brethren who had expressed apparently op- posite views at the previous meeting seemed to swing ‘round and commend the paper. Rev. Frank A. Henderson was the only sue who seemed to hold to his former posi tion, and that was on account of the fact at the public schools in Omaha were sup- ported largely on funds derived from saloon iccnses, He repeated that so long as that vas the ¢ he could not conscientiousiy nd his children to the Omaha schools Kev.
