CARING FOR THE \PTPRA\\‘ @enerous Provision Made for Towa's Needy Qomrades. THE SOLDIERS 'HOME AT MARSHALLTOWN ith How Prepar: for the Nine Annual ampment Keokuk Colonel Was Kaved— A Su ful Game of Bin at the ccens- The follo: renar issued by the committee of the soldiers home of Towa, | has been approved by the department commaunder The ten cottawes Pwenty-fourth by the at the are com provided for general assembly soldiers home at Marshalltown, pleted, and are now ready Only ten veterans and their wives can oceupy them, but there are over forty applications on file, from those who desive to do so. The cottages are well built, convenicntly ar ranged, and their appeat vory credita- vle indeed, and they add illy to the homelike appearance of grounds Meantime, there arc man our nee comrades and their wive who shou be provided with juse cornfort able howes, without waiting years, or | until the logislature meets again. To this end you are asked to continue the work alreddy begun, and build more cottages as 800n a8 possible, There should be at least twenty more cottages built ithin the next year, and this work can casily be ac complished if we only put forth the neces sary efforts, What post will have the credit of buildiug the first one? : 1t should be understood, that as uniformity i essentinl in building thesc cot that pians must be approved by the commis sioner of the honie In due time, after fun. | are raised or pledg ient to build three or four cottages, n plan will be adopted and information sent out as to the cost, which will not be less than more than £30 each But no the time to commence work in this line, and it is recommended that every post procecd at once and start a fund for this purpose. | Those posts that think they ave too weak to undertake the crection cottage alone, n raise funds that will be applied to the purpose, under the direction of the commis- sioters of the home, the funds, of course, passing through our department treasury and disbursed as dther funds appropriated to charitable purposes. ¥ The cottages already built are furnished, throughout. with the exception of stoves, by the Women's Relief Corps of our depart- ment, and 1t is sa say that they will do the same for such as may hereafter be built 101 cccupancy nce mater the of such two lu\\u'I)n]mrlnn-n( Notes General order No. 9, issued by Sleadman, department commander of Towa, confains important information for Towa veterans The department commander desires to announce that the arranged for holding the nineteenth annual encamp- ment, Department of [owa, Grand Army of the Republie, are Tuesds \\ ednes- day and Thursday, April 25, 26 and 27, 1803, 1t is the purpose of the citizens of Keokuk and the comrades of that eity to make the nineteenth annual encamp- ment one of the most notable in the his- | tory of the department. The natural en- vironment of the city, its beautiful sur- roundings and its hospitable people in- sure a most satisfactory and interesting session. | Many comrades of national reputation have been invited to attend the enc amp- ment, among whom are General ho- field, commander-in-chief of the United States army: General Noble, secretary of the interior: General Weissert, com- mander-in-chief; and Major Warner, past commander-in-chief Grand Army of the Republic: General G. M. Dodge and General Prentice. From some of them have already been received a posi- tive assurance of their presence, while it is confidently expected that all will attend. The presence of these distin- guished men, with others, who will be invited, makes it absolutely certain that the encampment will beé resplendent with oratorical talent. A movement has been started which will result in bringing to the encamp- ment on the day of the parade several thousand comrades from Missouri and Illinois. It is expected that each of these states will have in_line on the day of the parade a lurger delegation than | attended the national encampmen. at Washington. These visiting deloga- tions will be under the command of their respective department ofticers and itis the purpose to make the parade on the first day of the encampment a ve- petition, so far as it is possible, of that memorable parade witnessed on Penn- sylvania avenue at the national encamp- ment. It will be remembered that many of our comrades have been laid to rest in the National cemetery at Keckuk, which is one of the most beautiful in the United States. Excursions on the Mississippi river will be given to \mmls of historic interest, and in general it may be stated that no expense will be spared to give the comrades of Towa a royal weleome. District commanders should at once put themselves in communication with staff officers in their respective divisions, to the end that every post in the depart- ment may send a large delegation to thi encampment. The Col Must Be Saved. A Louisville Courier-Journal reporter once spent three days in the early sum- mer at the Rockridge Alum springs | during Colonel Thomas Peyton's ad- ministration, and those three days will always be remembered asthe pleasantest that he ever experienced. The colonel talked incessantly, und was always sur- rounded by a group of eager listencrs. One of the colonel’s stories concerned Colonel Blank, who commanded a dash- ing Virginia regiment in P. Hill's corps. On one cceasion this particular ~ regiment had been de- | tached on special duty and was some distance away from the main bedy of Lee's army and without support. One day the command was in camp on the bank of a small stream, a little too deep, howe to ford, The colonel’s tent, with thoso of cne of the companies, was on the side of the stream away from the enemy, who were known to be not far off. The other companies were on the enemy’s side of the creek, which was spanned by a small wocden bridge. Dur- ing the day pickets brought in news that the federals had begun a rapid advance in force and would soon be upon them. There was considerable ccnsternation and the captains of the companies on the enemy's side of the stream were preparing to cross it to the | other side when, to their surprise, they saw some of their own men attack the bridge with axes. Inall haste they ov- dered the work to be stopped and were talking with the workmen when Colcne Blaunk rode up to the opposite side of the stremmn in a great rage. “Cut down that bridge tomwm of thunder. “Hut, colol onie of the @inate officors interposed. Sever mind, sir!” shouted the colonel, p/l it the fuce with wrath, “Never wind, sir! | know what I am doing! Cut down that bridge. But the 1:”\!‘!' officers took the matter into their own hands and the bridge remained intact until the last confeder- ate soldier had crossed and then it was cut down, The enemy soon came up, but were checked long enough at the stream to allow Colonel Blank and his reghment to regain the main army. - 1 don’t want a torpid ta bad complexion; you don't want a bad breath; you don't want a headache.
