IRRICATION N NEBRASKA Noarly a Million Broad Acres Have Been Already Reclaimed. ONE DITCH THAT IS FORTY MILES LONG That Canal Wil Water Fifty Thousand Acre: —Ten The Culti. vation of Results Achieved by Ditehing. and Alrendy Und, The story Many people know in a Srrigation enterprise in the general west way of but few probably know in detail what is being done | in this state to redeem its the practical effects of th in that direction have been Hunt, who gave up a legal practice to en- gago in irrigating enterprises, is interested in one of the most important undertalangs of the kind in Nebraska and in conversation with a Ber representative offered many structive facts and figures drawn from experience. Snid he e in the eastern portion of the realize the wonderful trans formation that has already b and the work has only begun, 000 acres have been reclaimed in this state within the past two or three ye and other canals are projected for the present year which, when completed, will water more than that number. There is a wonder: ful and growing intecest being manifested both fn this method of farming and this character of investment. Within a few years an agricultural empire will arise within the arid belt where but recently the cattle baron held undisputed sway.' “What are the limits of this arid belt and how much of Nebraska lies within it?" It is bounded by the 100th meridian on the cast, the Pucific slope of the Rockies on the west, the British Dominion on the north and the Gulf of Mexicoon the south 1,800 miles east and west by 1,200 mi and south. Loeation of the Arid Belt, “A line drawn along the 100th meridian on id lands or what first experiments Mr. G. J in- his n wrought early 1,000, rs, '8 north the east would throw about two-thirds of | Climate Nebraska within this belt. But that portion lying immediately west of this line distance of 150 miles, or as far west, say, the junction of the North and South P! rivers, is within what is termed the humid® district, or wh enough rain in the coursc of the year to mature a ¢ but it isn't evenly distributed; that is, great deal of it falls early in the spring and Iate in the fall and very little during the growing season, to which fact are due the re peated drouths’ that have proven so disas trous to the farmers of that section and for which reason they raise a fair crop about once in five years and a third of a crop about every three years, and during the balance of the time their labor is unrequited and their mortgages are defaulted.” Can all the land within this area pe irri ated ™ No. There is not water enough for one- third of it. Omitting Alaska, it comprises one-half the total area of the United States It is estimated that about be irrigated. Outside of this region, the to number of acres in the United States that are productive is 255,000,000 Now, one acre irrigated will produce from four to six times as much as an acre of the very best soil any- ‘Where within the rain belt, and when this ‘vast area is reclaimed and cultivated its agricultural product will be at least & times as much as the total yield of the United States tod When our deep ha bors are completed and the Nicaragu constructed this area west of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers will feed Europe opens t ield to the immigrant “It will afford,” continued M. “homes to 50,000,000 of farm dwellers. tendency in every irrigated district is to small farms and intensive cultivation—a farmer of forty acres being able to raise more than the best farm of 100 acres in the rain belt can be made to produce. Irrigation Solyes the Problem. “There is no other occupation on earth, outside of farming,” Mr. Hunt went on, “that brings as much comfort, prosperity and certainty as this system of farming does to those who work byit. The element of uncertainty is removed and agriculture is given the certainty and exactness of a scien- tific industry. The farmer reaps, as he sows. He knows at the beginning of the season not only that he will raise a full crop, but that his yield will be four times as much as he could expect from the best field in 1llinois, and of such quality as to insuro him the highest market price. He also knows that there will be no rain to retard his work; nomud to keep him from market and no storms to delay hisharvest. s irvigation very extensively practiced at the present time “Yes; to an extent little dreamed of by Americans. Th Act is, the United States has the largest cultivable area on the face of the globe where crops can be matured by rainfall. There are very few nations that do not resort to irrigation, and many are en- tirely dependent upon it. Two-thirds of the agriculture of the globe at the present time is dependent upon it.” In speaking of the effect on the price of land conscquent upon the construction of an irrigating canal through it, Mr. Hunt said it depended on the latitude and the charac- ter of the products. *“The horticultural lands of California and Arizona, where the yearly product of fruit acre is worth from £500 to 2,000, cannot considered in discussing the value of farm land lying east of the Rocky mountains; but ‘when you can take such farm land, which, without water, is practically worthless or only valuable for pasturage, and by water- ing it make it yield from 25 to $125 per acre per year, you can estimate its value. The farmer, of course, doesn't figure as does the merchant or capitalist on a per cent basis of the yield. Taking the average selling price, fepm the completion of the canal until the community is settled, the figures range from $5 to §150 per a the latter, of course, being the price in the older com- munities, after improvements are con- structed, or, in other words, from three to five years after the canal is completed." “What are the products usually grown in this latitude?” “'All that are cultivated in eastern N braska and some additional ones—wheat, rye, barley, oats, corn, flax, broom corn, beans and potatocs, and the king of crops under ditch--alfalfa. It is the hardiest and least expensive crop handied and the farmer a count on cach acre of it being worth to him from 5 to $100 per year. It seems only 1o thrive in dry climates and requires a good flooding n fter each cutting. It is the crop for western Nebraska, for there is to be found the finest grazing land insthe world, and as only a small per cent of it can be watered — the st will never be culti vated but will remain pasturage, 80 the farmer under the ditch adjoining will soed his ground or a larger portion of it to alfalfa us tte sub- falls Hunt, minimizes, ithe expense, stances are by 10 means rare where the first year's trop has paid for the land, a perpot erright and all expensé connected and in- “In Cheyenue county on the south the North Platte valley. The canal is over forty miles long aud 1rrigates about 50,000 acres of fine tand. The land was all entered by settlers as early as 18, when they thought it could be cultivated without irri gation. 'The canal was completed last year and most of the settlers remained until then, though many of them were compelled to leave long before, but have already begun 10 return, *‘We have about 10,000 acres, about one- fourth of italveady under cultivation, with laterals constructed, ete., and we expect to re tenants or purchasers who will cul- ivate overy acre of the remainder this year.
