NETTED HANDSOME PROFITS Qost of Production and Output of Three Noted Mines, SEVERAL MILLIONS PAID IN DIVIDENDS Dald Mount stible Wealth-A The Chinese Boycott in M Western News, al Park tana The cost of silver mining is discussed ex tensively by eastern papers, particy those urging the immediate re Shermau silver purchase act. Statistics are presented in support of the argument which are intercsting, apart from the conclusions drawn from them by the New York Times The Last Chance mine, Creede, Colo., which Mineral | id &N | was opened in November, 1501, paid £750,000 in dividends between January, 1502, and Sep- tember of that year (we have no record of the payments after the latter date), and the cost of production, all the outlay upon the property being include the ex- penses, was 241 conts ounce With the total original included in the expenses, tho cost of pro ductidn in the Amethyst mine for the same year was 44 o bat so much h been spent in improvements and the pre ations for inexpensive mining in the futy had been so complete that at the end of last year thers we in this mine sev- eral million ounc taken out and marketed at a cost of only a few cents per ounce. The Mollie Gibson mine Aspen, Colo., has paid £2.850,000 in dividends in loss than two yoars, The cost of produc tion in 1801 was 16.6 cents an ounce and in the last months of 1802 it had fallen to less than 14 cents The Granite Mountain in )000 in_dividends, although it ook possession of the property only twelve years ago. The company's report for 1836 8hows that up to May 1, 1881, there had been expended for development 7,7 port ulso shows that the compan or its silver in _the year ending July 1886, the sum of #1,334.686.60, and out of tho profits paid £40,000 in dividends. It appears that in the same year the company depe ited in_ bank ‘#1237 5 of undivided profits. The report also set forth the ex- penditures for mining, smelting, supplies and all other items of cost, the total amount- ing to &106,470, or a little less than 1234 cents per ounce, in only an 1ts an ounce reossible s which could | Montana has Chinese Must Go. The anti-Chinese war has broken out afresh in Montana towns. About a year ago the labor organizations of Butte, Anaconda and Missoula waged war against the employ- ment of Chinese, and threatened to boycott citizens employing them in any capacity or patronizing Chinese laundries or restaurants. Since then the fight has been kept up by labor unions, A few weeks ago a citizens mass meeting was held in Anaconda, with the result that a committee of citizens, not members of labor unions, was appointed to help drive out the Chinese. The result has been that all but one restaurant has been closed and half the laundrymen have gone out of business and are leaving town. [n Butte the same policy is being pursued with telling result. No_violence is resorted to, but the majority of citizens have determined that the Chinese must go. Men who are koown to pationize Chinese laundries will not be employed in the city works nor by any of the lirge mining and mercantile companies. Since the movement was inaugurated the Chinese population of Butte and Anaconda shows a falling off of nearly one-third Bald Mountain Wealth . The mining expert of the Deadwood Times estimates that the blanketiormation of Bald mountain, covering an area of eight miles square, contains in the aggregate 150,000,000 tons of ore. This estimate does not include the sroond contact known to exist ‘below that, from which our producing mines draw their supply. This enormous body of ore is practically inexhaustible. Theabove figures do not not' could not give any idea of its magnitude, To reduce this pile of ore it would requires nearly 5000 100-ton daily capacity reduction plants working night and day to reduce in a year. These figures are given to convey to the uninitiated the mag- nitude of this one contact. In value, reckon- ing the ore to average 20 per ton, the body represents n y #1,000,000,000, and yet some say there is no ore in this section. A Great Natlonal Park, In accordance with the law authorizing the president to reserve from the public domain such land as in his judgment is necessary to protect headwaters und which possesses great natural scenlc attractions, the famous Mount Ranier or Tacoma has been designated as a reservation. The re- serve is forty-two miles square, an area of 1,764 square miles, and will constitute a na- tional park not inferior to the Yellowstone park, and in some respects more remarkable, 28 It possesses glaciers of great extent un- surpassed within the United States, except- ing onlyin Alaska, and has the additional attraction of magnificent forests and streams. From its heights the waters of the occan and Puget sound are plainly visible. This combination of mountain, forest and sea form together an unsurpassed panorama of the beauties of nature, Western News. A gold nugget worth $170 was picked up in an ubandoned placer in Oregon recently. The new Butte directory estimates the population of that city and vicinity at 43,065, Tow on the east side of the range in Montana are rolling in two feet of snow. The mereury is out of sight. \English capitalists contemplate purchas- ing 100,000 acres of land near San Diego and engaging in the cyltivation of sugar beets on an extensive scale, An investigation into the affairs of Berger & Hayblum, collapsed clothiers, Cheyenne, shows that much: of the stock was shipped out of town before the firm failed.
