14 LITERARY MEN AND MATTERS Wise Words from Bret Harte on the Fields Our Authors 8hould Glean. NO LACK OF “LOCAL COLOR" IN AMERICA_ Muardering & Masterplece — Reprehensiblo Methods of Ch lishers—Com Sense orship - Trans- atlantic Literary Tattl ago P n an New Youk, Jan Tue Bre.)—There is 10, —[Correspondence of no doubt that the west is beginning to make itself felt in the world of books and letters. The number of pub- lishing houses is increased monthly, and the quality of the output isof & much higher order than ever. The mechanical appearance of some of the recent books would do credit to eastern houses of greater experience. But with this healthful growth there has been born a tendency which, if it is further de- veloped, will do incaleulable injury to the west from a literary standpoint, It is true that this tendency does not emanate from the recently established book houses of honest principles, but these nouses will find it to their interests to combine and endeavor to put down the tricky methods resorted to by literary outputs in Chicago, particularly which should be closed p. Chiengo's Liters Chicago cannot afford placed its ¥ Stigi to have the brand name, which for so long o time New York, of being the largest output of flash literature, That this | is true today of Chicago, no one who literature at all can avoid seeing the largest percentage of the fve books to be found on newstands bear the imprint of some Chicago house New Yori i measures with which it suceessfully coped with this class of litera- tare, and Chicago can do likewise, It is not editable to the World's fair city that is looked upon in eastern circles today as the most likely place to which to send the manu cript of an erotic story. Again and again, during these past few months, have I known of manuseripts which New York publishers | have declined to handle for fear of seizure, to be sent to Chicago and accepted by houses | there for publication. Any city building a publishing trade has this to contend v But Chicago, in its history, is unlike any other city in the world, and it should retain that aistinction in sceing that its growing power is not used for the dissemination of a class of books which will put back its liter. ary growth and place a stigma upon it as a Jiterary mart that it does not deserve as yet, but will justly merit before very long unless proper steps are taken to eheck the evil, Mu 1 n Masterplece. Only in my last mail there comes to me a copy of u book bearing the imprint of th “Mclbourne Publishing company" of Chi cago. T know nothing of this house, but I will let the public judge of its methods. The book is called “The Cloister and the Hearth," and is presumably a reprint of Charles Reade's best work. His name is on the title page. But the story has been mutilated ina manner that scems " incomprehensible. vi- dently the house wished to have the book on its list for the credit it might reflect on it but probably found it could not afford to re print the whole book. So whole chapte were omitted, others were hacked to pieces whole scenes are missing from the middle of the story, and probubly only the beginuing and the close are there as Charles Reade wrote them. The result is that the book makes a mess of nonsense, and one of the greatest stories in the English language is | deliberately murdered. Under our sublime copyright laws. or rather the lack of them, no legal process can be had against such despoilation of a great book. But there ought to be some redress against literary murder of this sort, and those in authority in Chicago should see to it that the book at least be prohibited from circulation, It is bad enough to reprint a book without reim- bursing an author or his estate, but to steal & man’s brain work and hack it to piec adds murder to theft, Common Sense for Our Authors. Brete Harto uttered s great truth the other day when, in reply toa question wh he lived in England, and yet always chose American incidents and characters for his stories, he said: Because 1 believe the Snglish should write of the English and the Americans should write of Americans,” There is an astonishing amount of thought in that sentence for American authors to ponder over. The fact is, that our Ameri- can writers are by far too ready to seek for- eign scenc acters for their stories, while if they looked closer home they would fina material which they seem so reluctant to believe ts. There is a vast amount of American material for the Ameri- can author—enough material to make a | thousand great books. The fiction of the | civil war is all yet to be written. The south, in its romantic interest, offers the most tempting material for the purest of storic and sweetest of songs. Our social condi- | tions have not been wtroduced into a single novel of recent date with effect. The west offers an abundayce of material. Bret Harte himself has shown this. A greater part of Charles Egbert Craddock’s success was due to the fact that she made us acquainted with a 13'5 of whose existence we had barely heard. Up in the northwestern part of Peunsylvania there is a type as distinctive B8 ‘- that Crandock, Hart. o Riley has grer given us, and yet not o pen has touched it upon rested upon ollows By far Sty suggest today th ny Domestic Literary Materlal, The American public has never been ready to receive the Ame as they are today. Take the greatest successes of recent days on_stage or in book and they have been American types and characters. Bronson Howard made™ thousands of dollars with his play of **Shenandoah’ and he is in a fair way to make many additional thou sands with his “Aristocracy.” That beauti- ful poem of the south, *Alabama,” won on the American theme. “Colonel Carter of Cartersyille” in book form and on the stage touched the American heart and its pocket at the same time. American themes have never been more populay or sought after as they are today, and while our more far-see ing authors recognize the existing fact, too many of our writers are reaching out for foreign scenes, forcign plots and foreign characters, unwilling land for the best material at their command. The American novelist can have no broader fleld than that offered by his own country, its distinctive institutions and its eculiar conditions of life. The successful ines in fiction today are American lines and that author is wise who s what lies around him and utilizes it for his work., As Bret Harte truthfully says: “To write what you have lived is, to begin with, one secret of success.” The American novelist should write American fiction, and, as he does this, so in proportion will be his success. 0 Two New Story Writers. There are two name quite frequently in 1y best magazines. Th re those of Beymour Wood and Georgo 1. Putnam, both of whom are regarded in literary circles hore as bright and promising writers. Mr. Wood is & lawyer, about that have figur cent numbers of our years of age, a graduvate of Yale college, and is now | practicing law in New York His first story, A New England 3 Ingenue,” appeared in Beribuer’s Magazine. 'This was followed b other stories in various magazines, one of the best of which is *“The Story of an Beau." His first book, ““Grammercy Park," was published last yoar by the Appletons His secord book, Daughter of Venice, has just been issued by the Cassell company, | who also have in preparati which will contain several of Mr. Wood's later magazine stories, to be issued soon under the title of “The Old Beau and Other Stories,” Mr. Wood's work is notable chiefly for its studies of life and society in New York cit, He has made this o sy of observation, und his stories have accuracy and vigor, Mr. George 1.
