HAS T0WA ANY NATURAL GAS Report of the Btate Geological Board Cov- ering the Bubject, NATURAL PHENOMENA ARE ALL PRESENT General Co 1 of the Rock Steata Underlylng the Stute Make the Existence of Petrol Tanks Extremely Probable, For several years past considerable excite ment has been occasioned now and then by the discovery at different places in Towa of natural gas in small quantitics, The gas wells at Letts in Louisa county and those at Herndon, northwest of Des Moines, are per- haps the most notable. At both of the places named the gas has been used for years fo private purposes. All of the wells are the results of boring for water and hence are very shallow, containing, says Dr. Ke nothing but the surface gas. They there- fore represent but the possibilities of the state in the Hne mentioned In nearly every county in the state time or another the gas agitatior peared in one form or another. At different times of late it has broken out in Jefferson, at Carroll and Glidden, at Redfield and Rock Rapids. In boring for water inalmost all the sections of Towa, at one time or another, g has been accidentally discovered. This fact leads the scientists to presume thatthere must be a quantity and quality of the pro- duct down deep in the earth that is equal to the gas of the castern states. In response to this general belief the geological survey of the state provided for at the last legisla- ture includes the investigation of the mat- te Charles R. Keyes, assistant state geologist, has just made a report on the sub ot. In his ofticial discussion of the subject the geologist suys: With gns and ofl in abundance in the neigh- boring states; with a close similarity of geo- logical formations; with an expectant peoplo already testing in different parts of the state, the question naturally urises: What are the probabilities of obtalning these substances in owa? Before attempting to answer, howover, y be desirablo to review briefly th ssful flow. Th ads: The origin an it m tlons of & suc fall unde cumula:fon. The different theorles concerning the origin of natural gas and mineral ofl ne e con- sidero otall here. Nearly all geologists now 1 o that organic matier burled in the rocks at the time they wero lald down Is the real ource of petroleum, some regarding it a sort of distillation through means of moder ate heat, some 48 the result of decomposition Contrary to popular opinion petroleum isa widely distributed substance. The well known dolonifties of Chicago containlarze quantitios Orton hasshown that the water ltme formation of Ohlo, which 18 a compaet magnesium 1in atone having a thickness of 500 fect in places, ins not less than 2,600,000 barrels of ol o square mile. This 1s rock through which the ofl I disseminated so as to be perfectly yotifitcould bo gathered into place the amount contained in only three townships would or the tot nsylvu the year 1585 less” rocks as rich in oil as the Ohlo 1i stone or water lime. The lower carbonite ous limestones in southern Iowa are good cx- amples. Mr. Keyes then discusses the necessary conditious to make the almost universal ac- cumulations of oil of commercial value. It has already been shown that large quan- tities of petroleum are doubtless disseminated through Towa's rocks, the evidence being here as elsewhere the actual presence of a large amount of hydrocarbons. There is little doubt that strata reservoirs wifd the s coverings are present. This is indicated by arte- sian wells already put down in different parts of the state, as well as by the succe sion of the beds observable in the northwest- ern part of the state. The pressure js suffi- elent, as-is known -from various sources. “There romains yet one necessary condition unsatisfied. That is geological structare. It is well known that the strata of lowa have a general dip tothesouthwestward, the total amount of fall being in the neighbor- hood of 3500 feet. But the whole of the state is covered with a thick mantle of glacial deposits, hiding from view the stratified rocks entirely and at every point. Numerous streams, however, ‘have corroded their channels completely through the drift debris, even into the un- derlying indurated rocks, thus exposing in many places the arrangement of the differ- ent layers, It will be some time befove ax thing like accurate and detailed cross sec. tions can be made across the state in direc- tion of the common inclination of the rocks, and yet good progress in that line has al- ready been made. There is a widespread opinion that the Towa strata have still their uninterrupted rd tilt unaffected by defol tions of any kind. ‘Such, however, is not the case. Although far removed from mountainous dis- tricts, orographic movements have affected the beds to a slight extent, producing low folds. A number of these low anticlines and shallow synclines have long been known, though rather vaguely. According to McGee, says Dr. Keyes, who has indi- cated the chief axes of the state in a recent sketch map, the anticlines of eastorn lowa trend southwestward. Other folds have been ree ized in the centratand western portion of the state. The extent of this folding is" at present nnknown, but in some cases it may prove to be very considerable; sufiicient, perhaps. to satisfy the last requirement for a flowing well. Ttis not then peyond all hope that when the arching dome of some low antie- line is pierced we may yet hear the mighty roar, not soon forgotten, or list'n to the gushing stream of liguid amber, ity obtad w York ofl Towi there d from 14 up to doubt- the porous Nowtit Jan. 18.—With locomotive g on the ground ready for use and their fine steel track com- pleted, the North Galveston railroad now hrings the promising little city of North Gaiveston into direct communication with thervest of the outside world. Indians know nothing of those harm- tul drugs, and could not use them if they would. This fact is important. The medicine you take into your system should be to strengthen and build it up, not merely to stimulate it, and add the fuel of polson to the consuming flames ot disease. Indians don’t have Dyspepsia, yet they eat anything and everything, at all times and under all conditions. Indians don’t have Malaria, yet they sleep out of doors, exposed to night air, live in damp places, and frequent changes are quite common to their mode of life. Yet both these ailments and many others that the red men never have are frequent- 1y found among white people. How 1s it with the Indian? Knowing the value of Kickapoo Indian Sagwa he keeps it constantly with him and when his system feels run down, needs toning up as we say, the Indian takes a few doses of Sagwa. He keeps welll He don’t wait until danger overtakes him, but craftily watches for its approach and wards off the attack. Here is a lesson to profit by.
