The inventor is R. Moftitt. Ho claims to have perfected o verfectly feasible and practicable method of working the most refractory and rebellious ores found in the Sierra Nevada. If this true, says the San Francisco Chronield discovery adds untold millions to the v of the mining properties in this state. mining men and prospectors all know, ther wre hundreds upon hundreds of mines and claims unworked today, vich precious metals, because there has heen no known process by which the could be economically taken from quartz, In many of these mines have shown that the ores run even as high as §100 a ton, and yet the propertics abandoned, There were ways to get out the wold, but they were laboratory methods, and dear experience proved that in using them at it cost more to free the metal than the gold was worth when concentrated into bullion. Tt is claimed for this process by those who have seen it appliod that it will at a profit the most refractory ores, even though they run ot more than & o the ton. Bessemer pro be the although mn gold thoe assays have been bandons the Stamp Mil, Mofitt's machine is so totally unlike any thing heretofore made for working ores that no one would take it to bo what it is. The stamp mill is done away with alto- gether. The ore, broken into picces as large s walnuts, runs into a crushing machine, in which rough steel plates rub against one auother. The ore comes out in particles liko river sand. Miners unde stand that these rebellious ores contain ol dinarily 1o free gold whatever. Oue can look at this sand as it comes out of Moffitt's crusher without secing the glitter of gold or anything to indicate that there is o bit of the yellow metal in it. The gold is_held in combinations, and such combinations that only the most costly chemical processes have heretoforo been able toseparate them. This sand-like ore is fed into the “oxidizing” ma- | chine, the most important part of Mofitt's invention Eixternally this “oxidizing” machine looks not unlike ahoiter with some one end, a pipe at the other and a underncath, - A pressure blower is connected with it. Internally the machine is quite complicated. Within the outer casing_the are two eylinders, one revolving within the other. They revolve in the same direction, but the inner one much faster than the other. Wood is fed into the firehole and burns in such o manner under pressure that it be- comes charcoal before being finally consumed and 80 gives out an intense heat. This five brings the outer cylinder to a white heat. The crushed ore is fed into this cylinder, of course, heated with it. Fine Points of the P'r Here the inner coss. cylinder zets in_its work. It has scores and scores of blow-pipes upon its surface, and air is forced through them at a tremendous rate by the pressure blower which connects with the interior of the cylinder. As the outer heated cylinde slowly revolves the ore drops on the blow pipes and thus gets the full benefit of the blast. Somuch oxygen is furnished that everything in the ore but the precious metais and a soft, powdery ash is burned in this cyclone motion. he force of the blast issuch that the lighter particles of metal and ash_are fos upward and precipitated in a tank of water above the revolving cylinders. The heavier particles are blown downward and forced into another tank of water. Nothing is los If what is left of the oreat this time i examined the ash will be found to be glisten- ing with bits of gold, the metal having be released from the rebellious combinations which held it. The process does not stop here. A spiral keeps gathering up the sediment in the tanks and mixing it with quicksilver into an amalgam, ready for the retort. Thus the orc is put into the machine in chunks and comes out amalgamated. It Works Rapldly, Tests have shown that one of these ma- chines will treat a ton and a half of refr: tory ore an hour, while larger machines of the same pattern will have a correspondingl greater capacity. A plantof them could be run for comparatively little monoy, as one good engine would furnish power for a num- ber of the machines and pressure blowers, the only other expenses being attendunce and the wood or wood preferred —used m the oxidizing furnace. Anotheradyantage is that the machines weigh less than a ton and can be taken apart, no part weighing over 300 pounds, Therefore they can be easily transported over any mountain trail that'a mule can trav The ore at the Reeve mine at West Point, Calaver county, is said to-be the most re- fractory known'in California. A ten-stamp mill with a chlorination plant was tried av the mine, but it could not earn expenses. Experts who have scen Moflitt's machine work say it chews up the ore at the rate of ton and a half an thour and turns out $25 in gold for every ton, The discovery has already created quite a flurry in adjacent mining counties, and, in fact, wherever the particulars are known. old man de res that he is not selling rights or territory or any part of his patent. When Moftitt was asked where he got his idea he referred tothe story of the gold that disappeared from the mint. He said that £24,000 in gold was or missed from the San Fraucisco mint. No one knew where it had gone, but finally somebody thought of gathering up the Soot on the buildings around. The soot was treated and $16,000 of the gold was recovered, Moftitt ys e thought that would be a good w to'smelt ore, and so tried it in his machine, MARBLES AND ONYX, Valuable Quarries of Both Disc Worked In Utah, Within a comparatively short period there has been developed in Utah, and at several points therein, very considerable deposits of singularly fine variegated marbles, and also superior qualities of the onyx-marbles, While most excellent qualities of white and blue marbles have been for a long time known to exist, the unusually beautiful sam- ples recently displayed at the rooms of the Polytechnic societ the Salt Lake Tribune, have created a decided interest in what now bids fair to become a valualde article of export and for home 3 The character of the Utah onyx is identi- cal with that from Mexico found in the state of Pueblo alone, where there are now nine establishments solely engaged in_manu- facturing ornaments of excceding beauty from this material Since the Mexican Southern Pueblo to Tecomavaca was opened not less than 1,000 tons of onyx have passed oyer it The onyx of Mexico, like some of that of Utah, resembles amber in appearance, bug thoseof Utah have a vastly greater diversity of colorations and can be had iu slabs of con siderable size, 80 that they can enter into the decoration of interior walls in many ways not yet adopted and at a cost vastly less thin hithierto known The quarries at present opened in Utah exist near Logan in Cache county, at ’elican Point, and another on the west side of Utah lake, while still another is found on the east side of this luke adjacent to the town of Springville. rom all of these have been taken a most extraordinary variety of marbles und onyx of unusual beauty and all susceptibie of roceiy- ing the highest degree of polish The veiu of the mine near Logan is nearly perpendicular and is being worked in from the outerop on the line of the strike by us of a tunnel Those on the west side of Utah lake have a dip of some sixty degrees from the hori zoutal and are being worked ou quarry face, large picces may be taken out, while vered and rilroad from those near Springvillo are jnst now being uncovered in a variety of ways, The term onyx-marble is the proper one to give to the products of these claims, and this term, as clsewhere, serves to distinguish them from onyx proper, which is almost identieal with “the agates and practically only suitable for jowelry and the smaller ornaments.
