Eleotricity Pushing Into the Domain of Steam Power, St. Paul Ploneer Pre: We are somewhat prepared, from our knowls edge of the changes produced by tho substitution of the steam railroad for the stago conch, to understand what will happen in case tho projected electrie railroad between Chicngo and St. Louis, which Is to carry passengers at the rate of 100 miles and upward an hour, should prove a succoss. —Its rovolutionary ef- fects will not ba by any means to the transportation of people from point to point, but it will bear upon and alter hundreds of the eommonest facts of our daily lifo, and revolutionize to a considerable oxtont the course of busi ness, Mr. Edward Atkinson has laid stress upon the fact that every groat invention or improvement in machinery is potent as a Gestroyer, and that prac- tically all the implements used in doing the world's work must be consigned to the junk shop every twonty years. One bas but to think back for a moment and imagine himself purchasing for use today the pattern of any kind of machine thit was oun the market twenty years ago to appreciate the truth of it. “And Ve far-reaching and revolutionary will be ‘the work of the new rapid transit scheme if its practical operation mcets the hopes of its projectors, Tho first groat eftect, of course, will be the fint issued against the existing railronds of the country. They will not be destroyed immediately or lie as un used property any more than people have ceased to muke or usoneedles since the sewing machine was invented. But they will be assigned to new uses. The great trunk lines between important with all the improvements that have been made to secure comfort and rapid travel, must be used theroafter mostly for freight cavviage. If it is possi- ble to carry peoplo with comfort and safoty at the rate of 100 miles per hour of average speed, with a promise of bottor time still in the future, then it is clear thut the passenger train of the present, with all its costly accessories, and not- withstanding the untold millions that have been expended upon its develop- ment and improvement, must disappear as surely &s e Tetigpes ship beforo the ocean greyhound. [f people can travel from New York to Chiongo in from six toeight houra, they will not spend twen- ty-five on the way. And if the thing is amechanical possibility, then the money to mako it a renlity will be forthcoming upon demonstration. If the St. Louis- Chicago electric is a success, lines built and operated in the same way will con- nect all the larger cities of the country before the end of five years, Now such lines as this must be bullt in a very different way from tho or nary railrond. They must be practi- cally aur lines. Thero can be no steep grades or heavy curves ina roadbed carrying vehicles that move at the rate of 100 miles an hour. There can be no crossings at grade. There can be no chances of collision, but everything must be run on the biock sysiem. We shall have the country traversed by lines of communication perfectly shut out from the common_highways. Over the heaas or under the feet of the people, or in lunes securely walled against all appronch, will specd the motor of the future. Ixcept for the longest journeys,half-way or more across acontinent, the sleeping car will pass out of use, For its occupation will be gone when a man could not have time for even a comfortablo nap hetween New York and Bosten, Therailroads now in operation would be used, for a time, as carriers of freight, and those which sorve a rural patronage would hold their place for many years. But eventuully freights would seek the vapid transit lines, just as most of them have forsaken tho steamboat for the railw and the enor- mous _capitali n of wealth vepro sented by the railronds of the country must become wholly or partly unre- munerative. This is but a glance at the commercial reyolution which it is reasonable to belicve may be an nctual and tangible occurrence in the course of a few years. Nothing touches morve directly or powerfully upon the life of & people than such a chinnge in methods of transportation. If the new electric railroad is o success those whom it whisks from point to point in breathless wment wiil find it the forerunner of a new era altoge You dow't want a torpid hver; want a bad complexion; you don’t want a bad breath; you don’t want a headache, “Then use DoWitvs Little Early Riscrs, the famous little pilis. | Pears’ _ Soap We perspire a pint a day without knowing it; ought to. Judge Walker Reid was a famous lawyor and judgo of ante-beilum times, says the Cincinnati Commercial Gazette, Heo was for many yoars a circuit judge before the county seat of Masoh was transferred from Washington to Mays- villa. Ho was physically a man of great sizo, especinlly ubout the girth, Morall: he was a gom without a flaw, an montally he hardly had a superior in the commonwealth, He was o man of great digoity of character, and, toa stranger, bore the alv of being unaps proachable. But he had a heart s simple as o child's, and those who ap: proached him found his scoming austerity molted at oneo into kindnes and gentlo courtesy, Ho was of rathes quick tomper, but his angor wus of that volatile kind that ojocts itsell in rapid spurts, leaving his mind vosy with good nature, lix-Congressman Wadsworth of Mays- ville, nt present one of the attorneys of thos Chesapeake & Ohio railrond, was one of Judge Ileid’s most active tor- mentors,as woll us his greatest favorite. The worst joke ever played on the old judge was in" 1845, The judge and a lob of his lawyer chums were on their way from the Lewis circuit court to Flem- inesburg. Of course, Wadsworth was along, ana ready for duty as usual. On their v it was necessary to cross Kin- niconick ereok. There had beon o vio: lent rain ecarly in the moraing and, while it had not raised the streams to any great extont, it had rendered them all swift and muddy. This condition of tho streams suggested to Wadsworth tho scheme of u joke, the most harrow- ing thatev outraged judicial dignity since the formation of the earth, When they had como to within about a milo of Kinniconick, Wadsworth, eall~ ing attention to the swollen condition ot the small vivulets and “runners™ to con- firm hisupinion, stnted that he feared the large stream would be past fording. As ho said this ho slyly winked at the attorneys ana they ab once gave ex- pression to the same fencs, knowing that o practical joke on the judge was form- ing in theit associato’s cranium. *Well, what'll we do about it?’ fear- fully asked the old judge. *‘I've got to go, freshet or no freshet.” Wadsworth replied: “T'il tell you what, judgo; Thomas and I will ride on and test the stream hoefore the rest of you got there. Wo'll earefully oxamine the ford, and find the bost place for you to cross, judge, as you are not able to swim.” “Very well, very well,” judge. Wadsworth and Thomas galloped for- ward, When the judge and his party came veam they beheld Wadsworth homas on fho opposite banlk, weore stripped 1o shaet and s, and they ljeld a pair of pants cn them, which they affected to be wringing. **Hold returned tho up! hold up!? yelled Wadse worth, in loud tones of caution; “‘the stream is up to the line of your horses’ backs. You'll have to strip off your clothes, us we did, or you'll get ’em wet, and as it’s a cool day to get your clothes wet it would kill you, judge.” **Yes, thut's 50,7 admitted the judge, in sorrowful tones. “The old fellow then climbed down from his horse and slowly stripped off his olothos, all except his shirt (which was short), and tied them in a bundie. Ho then remounted his horse, placing his knees in the saddle and the clothey in front of him, and rode fearfully into the turbid stream. On, on he rode, but the stream seemed 10 grow no deeper than it was at the very edgo. Oa to tho middle. Still shallow! Then tho awful trath dawned upon him that he had been ‘‘sold,” for the stream at no point from shors to shore was ovor a foot deep! The poor old judge, as soon as he made the dise covery, gave a erriblo yoll of agonized anger and dropped his 240 pounds avoire dupois into the saddle. Of course, be- fore the judge could dress himself his evil genius was a mile or more nway. wus threo hours at Jeast before tha judge could be persundad to abandon his resolution of killing Wadsworth on sight. — “THE PRINCE O/ SAFEMLN.” Bold Exploits of an Arrested American ) Belgiun Adam Worth, alias Harry Raymond, who has been arrested at Liege, in Jelgium, is considered by the New York police to be the most noted of Ame riminals abroad. He has for y le London his residence, bee iug a fugitive from justice from the United States for complicity in the exs tensive Boylston bauk robbery, av Bos- ton, about twenty years ago, Worth, who is now about 50 yeats of age, has long beon considered the ‘‘prince of safemen.” Among the ear- lier exploits of this daring criminal was tho plundering of the Ocean bank in 1869, when he was nssocinted with L,\nr- ley W. Bullard, alias *‘Piano Churley,” Criminal and Mirsh, alins “Big Ike.” Maximilian, or Mark Shinbarn, and *Bob” Cockran wore ulso members of the gang. Among other big robberies which Worth’s gnng succeeded in wadwthat of the Morchants Union Ixpress company, on the New York Central railrond be- tween Now York city and Buffalo. Bul- lard, Narsh und a reformed ex-convict bound and gagged the messenger while the othar members of the gang covered the train hands with pistols, ‘They gov away with about $100,000, Marsh and Bullard were captured in Canada and brought back w White Plains jail, but pending their trial some of their con- federates managed to liberate thom and they wenu to Boston, It was ouly n few months later that the Boyiston bank robbery took pluco. The burglars got away with cash and securities amounting to $450,000, With this rich haul. the trio hastened to Iurope. InParis the “American Bar,” a cufo in the Itue Scribe, was opened by Bullard under the name of Charles H, Wells, and it was there thut a thriving gnmbling business was conducted until vecently, when the I'rench authorities closed ‘the place, Bullurd obeing sen- tonced to one year in prison, After the Boylston bank robbery Worth rewuined abroad a long time, although he has made a number of trips to Canada, Worlh wus arrested in New York city somo years ago for blowlug open the safe in Stiner’s toa store, in Vesey street, but ho got off, the =~ evidence against him being too fNlimsy, Worth is believed to be very rich, owning his own lLiouse i London, where he lives in grand style. He is the owner, also, of a flne steam yacht, and cvery season enlers tains his friends—all of a shady charac- ter—cruising up and down the Mediter- ranean, a8 only a few weeks ago that Sa- pmll“undcnl Byrnes roceived n request from the authorities on the other side for a description of Worth, which it was found !ullwd with that of a crook who has been victimizing some of the wealthiest banks on the continent. The indictment against him for the Hoylston bank robbery in ldoston is still alive, and it will be difficult for him to get away from his vietims abroad by coming to this ,ounlry, a8 his pieture isin every rogues’ gallery, and tho polico of every city will be on $ho lookout for Lim, .
