L. s and the brideis a Guve Away a Steam Engine, A new steam cengine worth $1,000 would be nvery nieo present for any- body to give of receive, and only w v tiberal and prosperous businéss man could afford to muke such n present, But that is just exactly what the Odgen Iron works of Council Bluffs has done I'hey built a benutiful new engine und gayc it to the Evans laundry people in this city, and it is at the present time, and has boen for several months, running that big plant. In connection with this magnificent gift there is an intercsting history, showing the confidence n bright man has in his own judgment, and how that contidence ean bring him lurge rewards for the products of his own genivs, For several yeurs tho luundry company has been using an Atlas automatic high speed engine, It needed some vepuirs, and Mr. Ogden was called into consul- tation. An examination convinced him that it would laundry pe and ho be The prieo be to the interestof the plo to put in a new engine, 1 urging them to do go. sked for the new macbine was 8000, or nearly twice what a new Atlas would cost. The lnundry peoble thought the price was extravi- wgaut, and they told Mr. Ogden 1t \\h\lu they were willing to patron home industries they didn't want to pay a premium for the privilege of doing s0. Final Mr. Ogden mude them a novel proposition that apy »d to be so alto- gethor in their favor that they at once accepted it. The provosition was to take out the old engine and replace it with the new and take the saving in coal for two years in full payment. The contracts weré drawn upon this basis, and the new engine was built at the works on Tenth avenue, As abasis for computation of of the conl consumption the lightest month in the laundry’s coal bills was se- lected, the amount consumed being 55 tons. The old engine was disconnected and the new put in its place between one bank, where Mr. 3dmundson has sn_oflice. He accordingly used it, and ignorantly pre- sonted the oraer, Mr. Edmundson himself vbemgright there at the time. Aftera severe scaro tho lad was leu go, with evidentiy somewhat more of an appreciation of the enormity of the ofiicnse than he had when he tivst entered the bank. —— S. Fuac: complishea the job without making any fuss about it, and has pever been the cause of the loss of a minute since. After running a short time the coal test was begun that was to decide whether Mr. Ogden was to get some- thing for his engine or get left. Mr, Anderson, the regular engineor who ran the old engine for more than a year, onducted the test, with the instructions that it was to he fair and tull. Every pound of coal thut went into the fur. nace was weighed and every gailon of water that went into the boiler was d during the month. At the commencoment of the trial the demands upen the laundry required the addition of the tenth large washor, and all the requi ments upon the mnew engine amounted to ten horse power more than the old, When the computations were made at the end of the month they showed a state of thin that made the laundrey people open th eves. But 31 tons of coal liad been con- sumed, making a saving of 24 tons, which, by terms of the contract, had to be computed at $2 per ton, or £48 a month for two years. Afteran agreed pereentage for increased pow i been wilowed, the grand total to be paid for tho engine was raised to a little over #1,200. This result astonishca and delighted ail concerned. It showed the idry people that they 1 been wast- ing a sum er thin the value of their old engine every year, and that while they had paid a’groater sum for the muachina than they would have been obliged toif they had not ent into the peculiar contract, the, able to do =0, and would get the in tho end without any cost.
