A resume of the cvents that led to his arrest and triaion tho cuarge of wilful murder is, therefore, given. On _the nuight of Avril 11, last, two cirls named Alico Marsh and Immwa Shrivell, aged, respectively, 21 and 15 years, received & man in their apartments at 115 St. Hanford strect, Lambeth, This man remained with the girls until 2 o'clock mext mornine. Shortly after he left the house the two girls were found in agony on tho floor by the landlady of ihe premises, Mrs. Voght. Tue girls belonged to the unfortunate class, and an ofticer was notified and thoy were re- moved to St. Thomas’ hospital. The Marsh girl died on the way to the hospital and the Shrivell girl died three hours after she was aamitted. i 1t was thought at first that tho girls had boen powsozed by canned sulmon, of which they bad partaken, but it was subsequontly learned that they had been poisoucd with strychnine. On examining the rooms occu- pied by tho givls a lettor was found, dated April 10, nccepting an_fnvi to tako tea wilth them next night. This letter was signed George Clifton, but it afterwards transpired thut the writer was known to the girls as Fred. No trace of the author of | the lotter could be found, and for a time tho onse was referred to as the “Lambeth mys- tery.” When the matter of the death of the two girls came before tne coroner for invesiiga- tion that official reccived a letter, which was provea to have been 1n the hand ogof a woman named Sabbatina, whom Neill was at one time engaged to marry. In this letter the writer said sho was in u position to give valuablo information, which would show that the two girls had heen poisoned by & young man named Harper, Tried fis Hand at Biackmall, Tne letter was placed in tho hands of the police, and from irquiries that were Insti- tuted, they discovered that abou. the samo time the coroner had received tho letter, Dr. Harper of Barnstaple bad aiso received a letter, admitted o have been sent by Neill, in which ho demanded the sum of $1,500, and intimating that unless the sum was paid the writer would give iuformation showing that Dr, Harper's son had polsoned tho girls. Young Harper was at that time a student at St. Thomas’ hospital and lodged i the samo house in Lambeth with Neill, On the ctarge of attemptea b forrod ogainst him by Dr. Harpe arrested. W. F. D. Smith, son of the late Rt. Hon, W, H. Swmith, and t Countess Russell, who, during the of her sut’ for a sepnration from hor hbusband, Russell, in December, 1501, had received a letter, alloged 10 bave been written by Nelll, accusing the earl of baviug nolsoned the Clover girl. In the letter to Dr. Broadbent the physioian was also accused of poisoning her, whilo Mr. Smith, in the letter ha received, was accused of administering sirvchnine to the Denworth girl.
