Almost every day word is received that this or that manufactiring establishment s seeking a new location, I'nese factories are | for the most part old institutions that are looated fa some stute a little east of Ne. | praska. They now find themselves fixed in some small town which has ceased to grow | while the conters of distribution bave moved away from them. A factory thatis located ut a large business centor always has a cer- tain prestice besides other business advan tages that are not possessed by the manufac- turor of the small town. A great many of these small town factories have bullt up a good husiness, but owing to the disadvan- tages surrounding them there is room for | verr littie future growth. Manufac- turers realizo this and many of them are looking for an opportunity to locate at a more favorable noint. A very serious obstacle is encountered in the removal of such factories. In the majority of the small towns there is no opportunity for the sale of the property owned by the manufacturers, and if they move they are forced to sacrifice their buildings ana land, in fact about evorsthing that they cannot take with them. There areagood many such plants in near by states like fowa that could be relocated most any Hme it the own ers could see some wuy of making up the loss incurred by the ubaudonment of eir property. A prominent local manufactnrer comment fng on this supject remarked that if there Was somne organized plan to assist in the re- moval of such factories Omaha cou'd easily secure a number of very valuable industries that would add several tnousand to the city’s population. The speaker expressed himsell as opposed to the bonus system as a general thing but that circumstances altered cases. “When a well established factory employing a larce force of men can be moved by simply making up to the manufacturer the cost of sucli a removal, it_becomes a question worth cousidering. 1 believe,”” continued the #peaker, “that If tne Board of Trade would put itself in shapa to take hold of such wat ters an immense amount of good could be accomplisted for the city. [ would not be 1n favor of domg anything to bolster up ‘Wwind-broken con ns, but let _uh efforts be confined to those factories that would be of undoubted value to the city. Other cities in the westare dowmg somethiug in this line aud Omaha ought to keep up with the procession. 1 have in mind now a factory in lowa that bas wade a great suc- coss of its business but the growth of other cities west of it has left itsidetracked in a small town and it is only a question of time when it will be moved. ~ St.Joe is now figur- ing with the managers for ils removal to toatoity. This factory employs hifty men and I know of ancther manufacturer that emgloys over 100 men who has told me that he would gladly move to Omaha if it was not for the loss that he would incur from the aoandoninent of the buildings at present oc- cupied by him, I would like to see some- thice done in Omaha toward looking after such opportunities.” Factory I WV, O. Taylor, manager of Bradstreets, says that if there is one thing that Omuhn needs more than another it 1s a large and commodious exposition building centrally located. The Morse-Coe Shoe company have ar- ranged that only Nebraska material be used in their new factory building, which is now well under way. “I'ho stato institutiors are large consumers of different lines of manufactured goods. The managers of some of these institutions who nave had their attention calied to the subject have commenced the practice of men- tiouing Nebraska made goods in calling for bids for supplies. Dr. Gillespie of the Ne- braska iostitute for the deaf and dumb is oue of the latest to declare bimself in favor of trying to build up the manufacturing re- sources of the state by patronizing those factories already 1n existence, ana hereafter dealers will bo asked to supply Nebraska goods for the asylum, J. Beckman, the cigar manufacturer, has samples of the tobacco raised 1n this state. The tobacco is ouly one year old aud hence hardly cured, but Mr. Beckman says that ic is good stock. In bis oinion it has been demonstrated that good tobaceo can be raised in this state. Tue tobacco raised so far will make a good filler and binder for cigars, but with a little more care and experience there 18 10 reason why wrappers could not be pr duoed, The Rouinson & Stokes company aro pre- pariug to enfurve thewr plaut by the addition of aboiler nouse. They will at the same time put 1n another boiler, thus adding very materially to their steam power. They are now employing & thira more people thun they Were a year ago. ‘The Om:aba box factory will soon have horsepower boiler to take the place of the sixty-horse power that they have veen using. This is one of the factories that has doubled its capacity in less thao a cts. Neveus of tho firm of ICatz-Nevens company has applied for a patent on an auto- matic bution boring machine, The manner of boring the holes in pearl buttons in vogue 8t the present time is a vory slow and tabori- ous method. Ihe button is held in a clamp and the drill pushed against it. Then the clamp is turced a quarter of the way arouud and another hole arilled. A good deal of time 15 consumed in fixing the button in lace as well as in the operation of boring. Jesides, it roquires a skitled workman to do tho work. lhe machine devised by Mr. Novens can bs operated by a boy or isl as well as by u skilled button maker. Briefly descrived, the igachine consists of four arills ar a4 on @ segment of a circle and perpendicular 1 o dise or solid irvon wheel. On this disc thero aro nseries of clamps made for Lolding the buttons in place. As tho disc revoives theso clamps open Automatically ou the side nearest the operator, alowing the removal of the fin- Ished butlon and the substitution of u blank As tho aisc revolves around carrving the buttons under the arills it rises suficiently to bring them i coytact with the drills. Thus four hioles arc bored at tho same time in us many diffecent buttors. While the machino has 10t been put to a practicul test as yet in faciory it has veen tried ou blanks oblained from the Omuha Bution faciory, end bas given overy cvidence that it would do its Wwork in a most satisfuctory manuer, It is evideut that a macbine of this kind would be of great importance in outton manufactur- Ang, as it would enable one girl to do as much &s four or imore skillea workmen, ‘I'he Omata Milling compauy is displaying 8 samplo of Nebraska winter wheal from Beaver Crossing that weighs sixty-two pounds 1o the measured bushel.
