SUGAR BEET CULTURE PAYS ! Advanco in This Eranoh of Agricultaral | Indnstry in America Fnoouraging. REVIEW OF THE SITUATION CAREFUL from the Ameriean Agri- Which to Text of an Artic enltaraiist e " Farmers Are pmended Rilse the Itoots for Market. | t. 20.—[Special to ThE | B est around in tho be sugar industry is taking vory definite shapo. The latest and most i accession to the cuuse is tho old Ameri- | enn Agriculturist of this civy, for fifty ! yeafs the conservative authority on the | farming of tho country. | Whiie it has given much attention to the sugar question for soveral yoars, and | especinlly during the past year, this powerful magazine announces n great department—"0ur Sugar Tndustry”—in its forthcoming Novemberissus. Spenk- ing of the effort to establish tho boot sugar industry on o permanent basis, it says: “Thoe foundations are boing well laid for this tremendous enterprise. T federal and state governments have done a vast amount of cxperimenting to determine where beets can be grown to advantage. Their rosuits have boen confirmed by hundreds of farmers who have grown heets on a practical scale. Six beet sugar fi i ro already in successfui ope The sugar trade and capital aro interested. The exper imental stage is passed. Lot the Col umbian year mark tho grandest cpoch yet in American agriculture—the care- ful foundation of a system merense the production of our sugar. . T'ho most inviting opening for agri- culture nnd capital that now’ exists in the United States1s the production of sugar from beets. The bounty of two cents per pound, offered by tho federal government for all dom sugar pre duced until July 1, 1905, gaaranteos such returns to the beet grower and to the money invested in sugar factories as to make beets the most profitable crop for the western farmer and the investment 2 most attradtive one. “The market is practi The TInited States 2,000,000 tons of sug inually, or onoe- third of the worid’s production. Yot this country produces hardly more than 200,000 tons, or only 10 per cent of tho sugar we consume, = Our use of sugar is goustantly increasing. The average American family spends move for sugar than for flour. T'he United States pays over $100,000,000 a year to foreign coun- tries for’ sugar. It could all bo pro- duced in the United States, thus keep- ing at home this vast sum. Il we pro- duced all the sugar we consumed the bounty to those engaged in the business would be over $50,000,000, besides which would be kept at_home the $100,000,000 now paid for foreign sugar. Thus $150, 000,000 would be distributed among our own people yearly. *“T'be benefits of the industry and of this enormous sum would go, primarily, to the farmers and laborers who pro- duced the beets, and to the capital in- vested in the sugar factories and the labor employed in them, thus supplying the western farmer’s demand for “*more money.” Thence this volume of money would find its way into severy branch of trade, stimulating all businecss, reliev- ing agricultural depression, and promot- ing the interests of all farmers by re- ducing the area of other crops. Boeet culture would also promote o higher type of farming gonerally, thus enhancing all farmers’ profi **Once lirmly established. the domestic production of sugar would make the United States independent of foreign countries. Dopendenco on foreign sugir has often proven costly; only recently the cholera outbrenk ‘curtailed sugar imports, and prices advanced 1 cent per pound. Iivery sentiment of patriotism and profit thus calls for the aomestic production of our sugar supply. Let the enterprise be madé a great national undertaking. TLet the capital be furnished by our own citizens, the beets grown by our own farmers and the management in the hands of our own business men. Let it be an Ameri- can industey throughout, so that the full benofit of the #100,000,000 now paid for foreign-grown sugar may ultimately be enjoyed by the citizens of the United States,” Just how to establish the business is discussed and the American Agriculturis’s plan is printed in full. This plan has already attracted the fa- vorable attention of New lingland and New York capitalists and the linal steps in the organization of the United States Beet Sugar company ave now being taken. It will have a capital of several millions of dollars, and men of the strongost financial standing will bo in- terested in it,including western and Ne- braska men of well known ability and recognized standing. The oxecutive management will be in the hands of men long experienced in large and successful manulacturing enterprises, aided by tho bost technicnl exports in the construce tion and operation of sugar factories. it is understood that the company proposes to follow the lines laid down by the American Agriculturist, which says: "Tho grontest success in the busines of producing sugur from beots in the United States will be governed by the extent to which farmers and capitalists co-operate in conducting it. So far as the manufucturing partof the industry is concerned, it is an absolute and as- sured success wherever there is an abundant supply of properly grown beets of good quality. Tho ono vital pointin the whole industry is to got the beots. To insure a supply of beets, thery fore, the farmer must bo directly in- terestad in tho factory. After making its suggestions in detail the article concludes s follow *IL will be seen that this plan guaran- tees such profits to growors as 10 insure a bountifu! supply of beets toany well located fuctory. With such a supply, the federal bounty should enuble tho factory to pay $4 per ton for beets of prime quality, 10 per cert on the cap- ital, and after meeting its reserves have asurplus in good yours suflicient to pay o handsomo extra dividend of 10 per cent on capital, and 50 conts per ton on beots. With an average yield per acre in Nebraska of fifteon tons, at u cost of about $2 pov ton, it will be seen that the farmer’s nctual net profit by this plan would be from $15 to $30 per ncre—many timesthe real profit from thecorn erop.” The importance of fall plowing is em- hasized.
