The case of the statdo against Charles Waggoner 1s set for trial in the criminal court next ‘Tuesday morning, \Waggoner was arragned yesterd 1d pleaded not Rullty to having stolen w horse, the property of Dan Mason, residing at Florence. The court officials feel coufident that they have tho evidence to send Wageoner over the road for a loug term of years, and in ms counviction they cloim that the lurgest and most thoroughly organ- fzed band of horse thieves that has existed fn Nebraska since the territorial days will be broken up. Sherift Leunett said yesterday that ho felt positive that Waggoner was only one of the many thieves who are operat ing 1n this vicinity and have been for several yeurs. The men operate from the Wessington hills in South Dakota to the Kausas line and are under as thorough an organization as an army, huving generals, captains aud privates, The distance covered by the fanciers of horso llesh 18 something ke 500 miles, with reiay stations every twenty or thirty miies. The plan of operation s like this: Iivery relay station has from three to five “rustiers” whoso dutie are 1o go cut into the country and steal horses, principally from the farmevs, The stolen Liorso is taken to the nearcst stal and turned over to one of the ‘“‘trustics This man takes the horse and rides him to tho next station, where L is turned over to another “trusty,”” who rides him to anothe station. T'his is continued until the animu! has reached a point at least 100 miles from where ho wasstolen. Then heis putintooneof the horse trading camps and disposed of to the kest agvantage to an iunocent purchaser, or soid for cash, 1t the original owner hap- pens along and attempts to make any trouble the horse is given up, tho trader protesting and claiminz that he came into the possession of the auimal through a trade. At each of the trading cawps or relay stations there are any number of hangers-on, who make it their business to do nothing but watch the movements of the oflicials, wnd if they have stolen borses in stock they cache thom uutil the excitement biows over and then they run them on a few stations farther, where they are disposed of. Ounce a month the captains of tho several trading camps meet at some place agreed upon and settle up the business of tho previous month. Each captain takes back his share of the swag and divides it among the men who are working as *‘rustlers” and “'trusties,” their sharedepending absolutely upon how suc- cessful thoy have been in gotting horses aud in getting awuy with thom. The band of " thieves, the sheriff bel was organized by the remnaut of Middloton baud that flourished Niobrava river valley and was number of vears ago. So bold hiave those fellows become of late that they have established trading camps al most i the heart of the city, At this time severnl of them exist within two miles of the postofiice, whiie there are anv vumber of them around South Omaha and just over the line in Sarpy county, In fact, the sheriff Kknows of aline of these camps that éxtends from the Dakota live to a point as far south as Brownville, and from nearly every one of them stolen horses have been taken auring tho past three months. "o show thal theoperators keep thoroughly posted it is only necessary 1o stato that when Waggoner vus arrosted by Deputy Sheriff ;McCarty he had nearly 200 postal cards in his pocket uil describing stolon horses aud atl mailed to him from postofices in Dakota, iowa, Nobraska ana Kansns, ince his arrest ho ks weakened to some extent and has told the sheriff where there ure several horses and nules seeroted in the woods vear Floronce and Papiliion. Ile, however, refuses to divulge the names of any of his associates in crime and claims that the state will have a aificalt matt vroving him guilty, as he says that ho bad no knowledzo™ that any of tho horses that eame into his possession were stolen, zof the o3, the “Doc’ in. the broken up a MRS, RkE Ys enaRGe Bho Says A, L. Jury in the Mogan-Street Railway Com- arged Yesterday., Judgs Irvine returned from Tekamah yesterday noon, and about tho first thing that he did was to wend his way up to his court voom in Tuk Bee building, where he had been led to velieve that riot was run ning wild over the action of the jury in the as0 of Jonn Hogan, who had sued the Omaha Stroet Railway company in an action to recover £20,000 for the loss of a leg. “Lte jury \was o:dered brongnt bofore the court, but there was nothing about the appearance of the men to indicato that they had any fecling against the plaintiff or the defendant They had been out for forty-eight hours Judge Trvine asked them if they could agree.
