ALL QUIET IN BURT COUNTY -lnd‘a foott and the Attorn Good Behavior. on Their NOTHING ~ SENSATIONAL OCCURRED Peterson Appeared in Court and Continued Is Practice, Though He Has Neither Pald the Fine Nor Offered Any Apology. TrxAmam, Nob, Oct. 17.—[Special Tele- gram to Tne Bee,]--Judge Scott took his t in the court room at 10:30 a. m. Ahout half of the Buct county bar was prosent and the court room was packed with an anxious audience, anticipating a seusation. In this they wero disappointed. The judge wvas as agreeablo as could be asked snd tho lawyers went their full length to meet the judgs on amieable terms. The first act of the conrt was to naturalize Jonn Nelson, w Swede. Ho then called the crimiual docket. he first case tho state ucainst M. J. Gullagher who was called up to plead, He pleaded not guilty of catting a fellow tramp with intent to kill. ‘Lhe case of the sate vs Renstrom was called. The aectendant, haviog oloaded guilty, was sentenced 1o twenty days in the county ail, d The %0 of the state va Amos Stevens was called and Attorney Poterson, who was fined §100 for contempt and sent to_Jsil last week and ordered not to appear be- foro Scotts court until he purged Eimsell of tno contempt, appeared for the defense and was permitted by the judgeto proveed in thoe same agreea- blo way us all other lawyers. The case was wet for tria! at 2 o'clock and M= Peterson will procee | with the case, ulthougn he has neither puid the fine nor offered auy apology. Altorney Wharton was in the court room and consulted with his buner on the bench. Undoubtedly ihere will be very little trouble until the injuoctlon case restrainiug tho at- torneys, board of insauity anu officers of the court from proceeding with the charge of in- sanity against Judge Scott, which comes up for trial tomorrow before Judges Irvine, Davis and Keysor. Both sides seem to be on their good behavior today, although the at- torneys still declarc thal as soon as the in- Junedon caso can be disposed of they will Ppush the insanity cas More Trouble Anticipated Shyster is & term to which the Burt county attorneys object, especially when ap- plied by members of their own community, as 1 the peution wbicn was circulated by the farmers last Saturday. IU1s thought tho luwyers bave concluded to rely upon their ability to substautiate tho charges made against Judege Scott as the most direct way to disprove tho damaging aliega- tions made in the farmers' petition. To this end thero seoms to be a quiet determination 0 push the insanity procecdings as soon os thio injunction case is disposed of, and while there has been an apparent cessation of hos- tilities toaay, it is evident tkat both sides are prevaring for a measuro of strongth on the morrow Fon. H. D. Estabrook ana Atlorney . W, Simeral of Omuha are now oun the ground, while a score of others aro expected tomorros. Tho matter has gone so far that it 1s dificult to see how either side cun, recede from its position, and it 1s now guite probable that the matter, which at one ime could have been settled with but few concessions, will zow have to be contested to the bitter end. "To illustrate what a small bevinning thero may be to an_affair of far-roaching import- ance, it may be well Lo note toat this trouble had its origin in 8 tle iucident which oc- eurred on the train while Judge Scott was enroute to Tekamah to open court. Two at- torneys were comiug up on the same train with the judge. One was to try a onse and tho otuer dissuaded him from trying the cuse before Scott. A gentleman sitting o tho seat bohind and hearing this conyersation between the Lwo uttorneys, went into the other car and related to Scott che conversation that took place in the front car. At tins Judse Scott secmed to fix a determination lo forco tho trial and it is doubtiess a fact that this little incident had much to dowith the subsequent action of 1he judge, which has caused such & evelone of excitcment amoug the legal fra- ternity. xri TITUD Members of the Men's Association Pass Kesolutions, NouroLk, Nev, Oct. 17.—[Special to Tue Brr.|—At a meoting of the travelng men of tho Klkhorn valley this afteruoon the fol- lowing was unanimously adoptes Resolved, That we, revresentatives of the Eikhorn valley traveiing men in conventio ussembled, do hercby extend to the wives of the traveling men, 10 thoso of ex-traveling ley Traveling men und the citizens of Norfolk in our sintere thunks fog the assistance renderod us béth in nd presence atour annual meeting at No., September 0. P, Hopkins last evening appeared before the Current, Tovic club championing tho cause of tha negative of the proposition that the city should have the guardianship of its poor. ‘L' prosident of the Commercial National bank contended that the poor should be looked after by a body free from ect the control of politics, ~acd seek- ing only the good of the indi- vidual. ~ He contended that there should be two principles actuating the care of the poor, a curative und u preventative influ- ence, from which only great good could re- sult. He made tho assertion during the course of his remarks that it was sometmes tho sincerest charity to retuse help 10 a max, for it gave bim new life to fight the battles of life and tended to help him on his feet, a remark that called out considerablo antag- onism during the course of the debate. The affirmative was espoused by several mem- bers of the club, the evening being very profitably spent in aiscussing a vital ques- tion of cur daily life. —— Disease never successfuily attacks the tem with pure blood.
