The question of having a fire watsh in the tower of the city hall or in some other elo- vated place was discussed at length &t tho mesting of the Fire and Police Commission- ers last night. No conclusion was reached, though the majority of the commissioners thought that a watchman ia a tower would be a good thing., especially in cases where fire would break out some distance from & patrolman’s beat or from a fire alarm box. The question was laid over for one weok in order to allow & committes to consult with the fire chief, A communication from President Davis of the city council requested the board to relo- cate tne fruit and vegetable markets, Mr. Davis wants the market to be on Tenth street between Dodee and Capitol avenue and on Dodge between Ninth aad Tenth streets. ‘I'nis matter was reforred to Chief Seavey. I'ho chief of polico recommended that W. K. Marshail be appointed & patrolman, vico I'. 1. Bennett, resigned. Referred to the commitiee on men and discipline. P, Hopkins last evening appeared before the Current, Tovic club championing tho cause of tha negative of the proposition that the city should have the guardianship of its poor. ‘L' prosident of the Commercial National bank contended that the poor should be looked after by a body free from ect the control of politics, ~acd seek- ing only the good of the indi- vidual. ~ He contended that there should be two principles actuating the care of the poor, a curative und u preventative influ- ence, from which only great good could re- sult. He made tho assertion during the course of his remarks that it was sometmes tho sincerest charity to retuse help 10 a max, for it gave bim new life to fight the battles of life and tended to help him on his feet, a remark that called out considerablo antag- onism during the course of the debate.
