Justice Hunt of this city proceeded at once to hold au inquest. The testimony showed that a party of twenty or thirty armed and masked men went to the house of Gilbert Daniols about miduight, soizea Ransom, put n rope around his neek and told him they wanted him to go with them and show them where the other negroes lived who had been doing mischief in the neighborhood. About 2 o'clock the mob reached tho place where Armor and Walker wero living, forced an entrance, dragged them both out, placed ropes around thoir necks, and in company with Ransom marched them in the direction of the woods, Walker made desperato vesistance and shot at the orowd aud 1t is believed hit ono of the attaoking party. He was overpowered, how- ever, and taken away. That was the last kuown of them alive. ‘The bodies were found about daylight by a negro boy who was hunting stock. Armor and Walker had their legs tied up and their knees wore almost touching the ground. All had aled of strangulation. * Result of a Race War. The tragody was doubtless the outgrowth of the ktiling of & notorious negro desperddo named Jarrett Burns by John Ashley, July 29 last. Ashley had sold Burns a horse which the latter had not pwid for. T he horse wot to breaking into Ashloy’s Held and Burns would uot keep him out. Finally Ashley took the horse and would not give him up until the negro paid for him. Bur: then armed himself and went to Ashley! house to take the horse by force. A dif- oulty ensued, and Ashley killed bim. This incensed the negroes in the commu- nity against Ashloy and threats of violence were made. A -few nights after tho killing some one attempted to entor Ashley’s house and was shot. On August 5 Emma Ransom, A sister of John Ransom, was brought here by An urmed escort of negroes. Sho stated that u mob of masked white men had taken her out the night before and attempted to haag her, but she escaped them and as she ran away they shot her. An examination showed that she had not been shot. The bad feeling continued to grow. Ash- ley's horses were poisoned and his crops preved upon. His life was throatened and his neighbors guarded his house overy nignt. Negroes rode about, the neighborhood armed with Winchesters and au open collision be- tween the whites and blacks was cons tautly expected. More Bloodshed and Excitement. Saturday night & weok ago two negroes were taken our. and whipped. Last Satur- day night two nore were treated In the same way, and an attack was made on another negro, but he succeeded in driving the crowa away, aithough he was wounded. In a pocket of ono of tho dead men a document was found which purported to be an oath signed by a number of negroe: in which they hea sworn to kill John Ashley and others. A rumor roached the city last night that the bodies of three more negroes were found in the woods not far from the scene of the hangiug, riddled with bullets. The raport cannot bo verified. The negroes are grestly agituted over tho affuir, and every one in the vicinity of the trouble is said to have left, It is reported that they held a meeting in the city last night, but how they viewed the sit- uation cannot bo learued, as they will not talk. The people who deplore the affair and the authorities are doing their uimost to ferret out the pervetrators of the crime. It is feared that there will be still more serious trouble before the end is reached.
