HIS NOMINATION RAISED A LIVELY ROW Harmony Was Absent from the Conven- tion—Dissntish to Thelr Objections to dacy~The Judicial sd Democrats Give The democrats of the Ninth congressional district yesterday nominated Judze McGee of Council Bluffs, The conveation was a howling success, the howling beiny demo- cratic, the succoss republican. The dele- wates came well laden with political pyro- techinics and for a time oratorical sky rockets wero firod with becoming regularity and en- thusiasm, but toward the ciose the mischievous freo silver fuse got in among the fireworks and there was a general explosion, There were muny wounded and their groans were unutterably utter, ot Tho preliminary work of the convention was characterized by the calm which pre- cedes a storm. State Senator W. I, Cleve- land of Shelby county gave the call to order and a temporary organization was effectod by the choice of 'J. J. Snew of Council Bluffs a8 chairman and W. B. Gardner of Villisca a8 sccrotary. Committees were appointed and then adjourament was had for noou lunch, Permunent Officers, Returning at 1 o'clock with toothpicks and cigars. the committeos roported and Ssnator Cleveland was made permanent chairman, acd M. Flammant of Mills county secretacy. The most practical suggestion of the chaic- man’s opening speech was thut the conven- tion skould namesome one wio could make as good a stump speech as Senator Hager, tho republivan nominee. This recommenuation wus rather glumly received by the few en- thusiasts who \ere bent on reuomiuinating Congressmun Bowman, and who was never known to make a spoech in bis Life, An impaticnt wait followed, while the com- mittee appointed for that purpose was build- ing a platform ia an adjoining room. Iho mouotonous interim was broken a little by stich unimportant motions as limiting the nominating speeches to ten minutes, no nom- inations to be made except by duly aceredited delegates, eto. Colonel Whittlesey. who had been hustily whispering about that Towm Bowmau must be nominated in spite of his protestations, was called out of the room, and on his return addrossed the convention with tears in his eyes, announcing that Mr. Bowman had di- rected him tosay that under no circumstances would he accept a nomination. The colonel closed an elcquent eulogy of HBowman by offeriug a resolution thankine that gen- tleman for the service he had rendered democracy in the past. A mising vote was called. It was so apparently unanimous that it.secmed unnecessary to call for the other side, but the formality was indulged in, ang to the surprise of the chairman the other sido was there, two democrats, Dr. Hemp- stead of Woreland and C W. Ruckman of Montgomery county, rising to their feet and refusing to say even a thank you to the re- tiring congressmun, This was the first evidence of bad blood, It required the report of the committeo on resolutions to bring it further out. A ma- jority and minority vaport were presented. The majority report pruised Cleveland, en- dorsed tue lust national and state democratic platforms, and expressed thanks to Con- gressman Bowman, The Minority Resolution The minority report signed by F. C. Clark of Mougomery county and T. W. Ivory of Mills county caused & storm. Colonel Whittiesey wanted the two raports joined in holy weadlock, but the bans were forbid. C. F. Chase of Atlantic moved that as a substitute for the report the convention quietly sottlo down onto the platforms adopted by the Chicago and Davenport con- ventions. Then the free silver men bohbed up most spiritedly. Clark and Ivory insisted that the democrais had batter face the music aud declare themsolyves. Walton Wil «Stand Pat.’ Sheriff McQueen of Grand Rapids, Mich., arrived in the Bluffs last evening to take in charge P. A. Walton, who was arrested the other duy on o telegram which stated that be was wantad to answer to the charge of assault with inteat to commit murder. Wal- ton has been coufined in the county jail ever since his arrest. The Michi- kan officec visited him there and found tim very accommodating. Walton had employed a couple of attorneys and throagh them commenced habeas corpus ceedings, but when McQueen introduced himself Walton confessed everytbing aud announced himself willing to throw uw the preceedings and accompany him back to Michigan if he had the necessary papers for his romoval. The officer repiied that he had the papers, and supposiug that the matier was seitled he took bis prisoner out, to @ high priced restaurant and bought him & supper, after which Chief Scanlan gave Walton a 20-cent cigar as @& opartng gift. But the supper and the cizur seemed to have a baa effect, on Walton, for no sooher hud ho finished euting and smokiug than he changed bis mind, said he would “stand pat,” and would fight the habeas corpus proceedings to the bitter end. The Grand Rapids man ook him back to the county jail with a great deal of diszust, as he will not be abie to leave for home until this evening instead of at 3 o'clock this mornind, as he hud expected. The finance committee of tho council met Mounday evening at the city building together with the mayor, auditor and treasurer for the purpose of talking over the financial condi- tion of the city’s affairs. A pew scheme nad been drawn up forsettling the city’s bills for the coming vear, and it appeared that, tak- ing the first six months of the present ad- mimstration as a basis, considerably less money would be required to carry on the city government during the coming year thitn has genorally baen neoded. It was de- cided to reduce tho ussessments from 30 mills to 25 mills, which will make a differenca of about £3).000 in the entire amount of/ the tax lovy. The August term of district court opened vesterday with Judge N. W. Maoy on the bench. Routine matters occupied nearly all the day, such as calling the docket and mak- fng the usual preliminary arrangements for the work of the torm. The question of the legality of the method in which the grand jury was drawn came up. Tho legal point was raised, this time by County Attorney Organ, that the grand jury nad been drawn at ths opening of the year by the county clerk, without the sherif or the auditor being present, s required by law. The method \was the same us bad bsen adopted in past years, but it seems that it was not according to law and it was feared that consigerable troublo might resuit some time on account of the informality. Judge Maey accordingly d cided that the grand jury should be dis- charged aad a new oue empanelled from the body of the county by the sheriff.
