Dueling Among Uncle Sam's Ward fined to the Clu Ttisa fact that asmong Amorican In. dians of the same tribe, though they may number thousands, thore are few casos of quarrels that evoer result in murder. This is strange when it is ro membered that the Indian is passion: ate, uncontrolled in his impulses, cruel and ferocious by nature, They have their difficulties and theiv quarrels, but arbitration of the old men prevents bioodshed or murde Yet onco in a whils a fight occurs, and it is a novel sight to witness, says an old wostern traveler, One buck challongos another to combat. Accompanied by his frionds to the battleground, each buck is stripped and made to confront the other. Botween them lies a warclub, a smooth, long piece of hardwood, sea. soned by yoars of servico and regirded with reverence because of the blood- stains on it received during the war, The seconds of the surly-look ng dueliste toss up a piece of bark. The winnor l\n‘k» up the club, and his m?mnom, olding his arms, plants himself, bend- ing his head. Itis tho club bearer's privilege to whack his antagonist just us hard as he can.and with all the vigorous malicious- ness he can command, on the back. One blow is struck, and then the man who hus endured it picks up the club, and his ovponent is subjected to all the foreo he can command So the whueking goes on, and almost every blow is a knockdown one, until the duelist last knocked dewn refuses to accept the club from his opponent. Ha has had enough and the party breaks up. The severity of the punishment sondured in these duels is marvelous. 'ho club has a jaggid edge, and overy blow struck brings blood, making deep cuts and fearful bruise: Widow Ford Sheds Her Woods, A recent issuo of the Creede Colo., Chronicle, contains the announcement of a “'sociul event” given by Mrs. Dot Ford, widow of Bob Ford. Here is what the Chronicle says of it: Brave men with Winchesters and skirt dancers, with daggers in their boots, will tip the fantastic, glasses and things, in the Bad Lands tonight. Yesterday’s mail brought the follow- ing to the Chronicle office, encased in a satin envelope “tiod together nt either end with a golden cord. Pictured in the upper left hand corner is a group of men and womon seated about a table, whilo escaping toward the starry heavens is a ‘“‘carrier duck” with the handle of a 4-pound pail in its mouth. This would indicate that the can is to be urged—the growler rushed; or to use a vulgar expression, that it was the intention to fly the duck during the evening’s exercises. 'The wording of the beautiful engraving was like this: ‘“‘Yourself and friends are cordially invited to attend a grand ball Friday evening, August 5, in the Archu- leta building. South Creede, Colo., given by Mrs. Dot Ford.” The word *“ludy” was scratehod in the engraving and ‘“‘friends” substituted. Dot is the weeping widow of the la- mented Robert Ford, formerly of Mis- souri, and the friends of the decensed are expected to rag for the benefit of the widow. Quad in the New York Sun. There are ten graves in all, five on each side of the main walk. The whole lot is u beautitul grass piot, with trees, shrubs and flowers in profusion and n white picket fence sur. rounding the lot. The total cost up to date has been about $1,000, but tourists who have traveled in every country de- clare that they have seen nothing to begin with it. We beliove there is an editor somewhere in Idaho who has n privato graveyard with three graves in it, but we have been told that he killed his victims with a pickax while they were drunk. The lithograph reprosents a full moon shining down upon our p. g and bring- ing out every detail as cleavly as if seon under the noonday sun. A sort of ha L is thrown upon each grave, and the trarling arbutus and blossoming violets produce a softness of detail which goes ht to the heart of the beholder. ; ———— Cousumptive Indians, It is often said if white people could could live most of the time in the open air like the Indiuns, they would never have consumption; and, in fact, certaln phy- sciuns attempt to cure consumption by keeping their patients outdoors nearly all the timo.
