Strong Efforts May Be Made to Get Cull- fornia Freig SaN Fraxcisco, Cal, Aug. 23.—A state- ment is published here that the Union Pacific is only wuitirk developments beforeit makes an effort to secure the California freight business, heretofore controllud by the South ern Pacific—Sunset route. The new lines of clipper ships between here and New York are said to have made serious inroads in the Southern Pacific business and caused that company to call on the Transcontinental for help. The Pacitic Mail Steamship company, coutrolled by the Southern Pacitic, has al- ways been handled as a club with which to threaten any intended compotition on water. As it is likely that the Transcontinental sociation will refuse to pay & subsidy any longer, the Union Pacific will be ready for business. In view of this condition the latter rail road company {8 now preparing to increaso its steamer service between San Francisco and Portland. Instead of one steamer every three or four days, daily steamers will run, reaching Oregon as fast as the traius do. That the line from Astoria to Portland is being built by the Union Pacificis an open se- cret, and one quurter of the road is nzw com- pleted. When this is finished the Union Jacific sieamers will land their freight at Astoria and then send 1t direct east, It is estimated thut the average time from San Francisco to Astoria will be thicty-six hours, Two new steamers are to be secured at once for the trade, and the Union Pacific be- lieves that by thivs showing the merchauts of Sau Francisco its eagerness to help them out it will secure a good portion of tne trado which 18 now in the control of the Pacitic Mail Steamship company. The Great Northern also proposes to Vip down into the California business by runuiug a steamer down between San Francisco and the Sound, und later on, it is confidently bo- lieved, President Hill will carry out his orizinal 1dea of building from Butte, Mon., via Boise City down to San Frantisco. Thus both lines are reaching out tor California trade, Outwitting the Sealpers. Cnicaco, I, Aug. 23.—A special meeting of the Western Passenger association was held today to consider a_proposition of the Chicago. Milwuukee & St. Paul road to make an eastbound rate of £0 between Omaha and Chicago. The object of tho proposed reduc- tion was to meet the rate made by brokers in scalping tho return portions of Denver ex- cursion tickets issued on account of the Knights Templar conclave. The St. Paul was induced to withdraw its application by an agreement on the part of its competitors to take immediato steps to stop the manipii- Iation of these tickets, The plan adopted is to order conductors to take up the return portions of the tickets when presented on traius leaving Denver and to give each pas- senger a trai check good only for continu- ous passage to Chicago. Freight Shipments Increased, An mer e in the volume of east bouud freight shipuients is shown by rail last week uotwithstanding tio switchmen’s strike at Buffalo. Tno 1otal movement from Chicaco by all the roads was tons, against 47,106 for tae preceding- week. an increase of 2 tous and of 6,782 tons comvared with the corresponding week iost year. The official proceedings of the Western Freight association last week has just boen issued from Chairman Mideley’s office. One subject, suppressed at the time of the meet- ing, was a proposition of the Kansas City, Forv Scott & Memphis road to establish a rate of 1S cents per 100 pounds on cottonseed oil in tank cars from Memphis to Kansas City, Atchison, Leavenworth and St. Joseph and 23 cents to Omaba, Council Bluffs, Lin- coln and Nebraska City. It was claimed that the reduction was necessary to meet the competition of the Missouri Pacific, which had reduced the rates to those figures by paying rebatoes to shippers. The association voted down tke propesition, whereupon tho Memphis line gave ten days’ notice that it would put a reduced rate into effect. Richmond Terminal Keceiver Appointed.
