AVERAGES MUCH LESS THAN IN IOWA Good Work trial f the Stato 1 an of Indus* Statistios—Something of the Inhoit and Lowest Estimutos —Lincoln News Notes. " Laxcory, Neb, July 21.—[Spociai to Titm Ber. | ~For veral months past the Nebraska bureau of industrial statistios has beon receiving reports from practical farmers from overy couuty of the state in regard to the cost of proaucing corn per acre, In order to securo those statisties Commissioner Andres obtained from county clerks the names of ten well known farmers in each county. A list of questions was mailed to cach of these farmers, The itoms of expenso taken into consideration were: Interest on value of land at 8 per cout, taxes, sood, listing or planting, plowing, harrowing, rolling, oulti- vating, husking and cribbing, Out of 1,000 circulars sent out replies woro received from The figuros returned by those 535 farmers have been tabulated ina statement showing the highest, lowest and average es- tumates, The highest estimate received from any one county was $16.00 per acre, this estimate being furnished by a farmer in Nemaha couaty who values his land at 30 per acre, £1 for taxes, 10 conts for seed, $2 for listing, $2.50 for plauting, 8 for cultivating, 83 for husking, 81 for cribbing, He reported that ho raised forty bushels per acre, and thus figured that it cost him 413 cents per bushel. The lowost estimate wus furnished by a farmer in McF'herson county, who figured the interost on the valuo of his land at 20 cen's, taxes 10 cents, seed 10 cents, listin, 70 ceuts, cultivating cents, busking an cribbing 75 cents, Neither of tho above estimates are of value, as tho ono is evidently too high and the other manifestly too low. They are cited more to give an idea of the difference in the opinions beld by differsat farmers and to show the difficulty 1 arriving at a true esti- mate of the cost of producing Nebraska's greatest staple. The average estimate by counties ri fel from $4.14 to §0.84 per acre. The tabvlation 18 not quite complete, a fow counties yet being missing, but the average estimate for the eutire state as far as received is $0,5§ peracre. This is tho average estimate as furnished by tho farmers of thy state them- selves, It may be interesting in this cons nection to note that the lowa bureau esti- mated the cost of producing corn in that state at $10.33 per acro, Steve Jones Talks Republicanism. The regular weekly meoting of Lincoln, re- publicaus was held at hoadquarters, . this evening, the hail being filled as usual in spite of the intense heat. Many wero at- teacted by the anuouncement that Stove Jones was to be the orator of the occasion. Mr. Jones was secretary of the people's in- devendent county central committee until within a fow weeks ago. He changed his mind in regard to the independent party and is once more a republican. His adaress this evening was on the recent national conven- tion at Omaha, and 1 1t he descrived the scenes that were enacted at the big Coliseum in language which brought out shouts of ~laughter. At that con- vention, said Mr. Jones, were gathered a groat throng of men, nach with a hobby, a cure-all for existing ovils, a specitic for occonomic maladies, There were the alli- ancors, the Kuights of Labor, single taxors, nationalists, iree traders, freasilver howlers, subtressury hemers, democrats, Kore- shanties, and all the pains and aches of political disaffection. Tae recoption of the platform was marked by the wildest scene of rejoleing that had ever been enactea on this continent. And why should it not be an occasion of voleanic uproar! inquired tho speaker. Every delegate got just what he wanted. The platform was so broad 1n its ideas, freo in its promises, that every faction was pacified. Aunlyzing the Piatform. Taking up the Omaha platiorm section by section, Mr. Jones gave an elaboralo 6xposi- tionof it * * * ‘and foliowed it up with logical and convincing arguments against oach and every oue. He gave especial prominence to the subtreasury plank, show- ing how it would benefit the cotton planter to the detriment of other indusiries of tho south, and demonstrating that 1t proposed legislation for tho benefit of a class, He charactorized it as simply 8 scheme to take the government into partuership to form a corner and make cotton scarce. The land- loan system, ho said, “was evolyed for:the bonefit of the northesn farmer, who had no cotton to sell.
