Lixcony, Neb,, July |Special to Tnr Ber.|—In accordance with the statutory provisions ot the laws of Nebraska, which permits the pardon of two convicts on every Fourth of July, Governor Boyd yesterday afternoon aftixed his official signature to the pardons of Neils Godfredsen of Valley county and Henry B. Coyue of Cheyenne county, and on Monday both men will leave the penitentiary, where they have lived for more than ton years past. A careful con- sidoration of thie facts in the case of both men convinced Goyernor Boyd that they wero worthy of the clemency ho extended to them, Godiredsen was tentiary on May 20, The man Kilied by hitn was a fellow citizen of Valley county. Hohad called upon Godfredsen to induce him 1o s1gn & potition for some purpose or oth Godfredsen refused and Lot words followed which soon resulted in a fight in which Godfredsen was whipped so badly tuat he was ccnfined to nis bed. The next ¢ the man appeared at the houso with the potition and upon the refusal of God wifo to sign it, he commenced to ngered at tho ussault vpon his tsen sprang from his bed, seized comm! 1882, ted to the peni- sau fredsen’ beat her. wife, Godfre an old musket standing near aud riddled the assailant with bullets. Coyno was a herderin Cheyenne coun and was nover adverso to a friendly game of poker. Oue evening he won a cousiderable sum of monoy from a wealthy stockman. Tho next day tho stockman domanded the roturn of his monoy. Coyne declis it over and u fight ensued, Duving the ficht tho stockman drew a revolver and fired three shots at Cogoo. Before he could firo tho fourth Coyno had drawn a weapon and tho stockman fell mortally injured at the first shot. Tho conduct of both men has beon excellent sinco their incavceration, neither having been reported for an infraction of the rules. Howard; flour, Johuson, May Effect a Compromise The residents of East Lincoln who are so vigorously opposing the Kock Island grade crossiug at O streot have suggestod tho fol- lowing compromise: They propose that tho Rock {slana tracks be depressed six feet be low the present grade, and that the present O street grade bo raised six feot for a short distance on each side of tho crossing. The street would then be filled in from lot line to lot ljne and the slope up to the cut would be so gradual that street traflic would in no wise be incouvenionced. In aadition the Rock Island 1s to erect a short viaduct not more thau cight foet high over its tracks on O street. A compet:nt engineer has estimated the cost of this viaduct, together with all necessary expensos of changing the grade, filling, curblng and repaving, at 7,000 The Rock Island oficials are suid to look upon the proposal with soine degreo of favor. A big barn belonging to Brown Bros. was de- molished at_the corner of Twenty-soventh and Orchard streets, Although it was a sub. stautial structure, the forco of the wind duced it to kindling wood. A section of the coul sheds of L'rester’s coal yards, twenty fect wido and thirty-five feot long, was picked up and carried some distance and de- posited right sido up in a vacaunt lot. Numerous sheds, barns and small buildings were demolisned, but fortunately not a single dwelling house wus injured and novody was hurt.
