DONT LIKE TEXAS, WEATRER 014 8ol's Eathusiasm Nearly Floors the Boys Quartered at Camp Brooke, SUNDAY AFTERNOON SOME SHOWS Several Pretty Exhibition Drills Given by the Different Companies—A MeCarthy Wins the Individual Prize—Child- ren's Day Tomorrow. TLite at Camp Brooke was exceedingly dull yesterdny forenoon. The sun beat down With torrible force upon the city of tents, and long before noon the heat was so intense that Jife under canvas was almost unendurable. Guard was mounted at the customary time and after that moro than half the soldiers 1n camp left for the city. g Divine seivices were held by Dean Gard- nor in the amphitheator at 11 o'clock. On ac- count of the smull attendance the services wero very short. The dean read a short pas- sage from the scriptures, commented on it briefly and then offered prayer. Company streets were ulmost deserted, but tero and there under an awning could be found two or three uniformed men. quietly talking over their chances for the oup, the maiden prizo or the individual medal. Butthe camp was dead and the heat seemed to grow moro intense every moment, and not a man moved from tho shelter of an awning 1f ho could possibly help it. About noon the band gave a concert in tho grove, but oven the music Had no attraction for the tired out soldiers avd littls attention was paid to it. About 2 o'clock the grand stand began to fill up and before long the promise of & good audience was assured, ‘L'ne individual prize drill for the C., S. Raymond gold medal, for the best drilled soldier in ocamp, was callea at 3 o'clock. Originally There wore fifty odd entries, three being allowed from each company, but when the hour arrived only thirty-three men went on o the field. Tho soldiers in their aifferent colored uniforms were drawp up in a line facing the grand stand and the plan of pro- codure was somothing like the old time spelling school. As soon as a man made an error he was dropped out. Lieutenaut Reed, U. S. A., commanded the drill and Licutenants Andrews and Picker- fug, the other two judges, watched the move- ments of the men. ''he manual of arms came first and & Fencible man_aropped out. ‘Then the crowd cheered, in fact the audienco was very good natured and cheered at every- tbing. One by one the aspironts for the medal fell until only two, a McCarthy and o Sealy, stood before the judges, ‘Unen tho real battle commenced. After ten minutes hara work the boy iu white from Galveston made an error, and left the Little Rock mau standing alone. Durand Whibple, a private of tho McCarthy Light Guards was the winner. The grand stand cheered and yelled, and the McUarthy b who witnessed the drill, nearly went w fhey took Whipple in their arms, threw him in the air, and finally carricd tho victor from the field awid tho cheors of the crowd. 2 A splendid arill by the Indianapolis Light Artiliery followed, and entertained tho crowd for a full half hour. The work of the battery under Captain Curtis was excelient, and was fuliy ns good as thedrill put up for tho prize. 'he University Cadets of Lincoln and the National Fencibles gdve exhibitions, and were followed by the McCarthys and Flotchers, who drilled s one company. Captain Lechtman and his Hale Zouaves then came on and kept the crowd luterested for some little time. Much to.the disappoint- ment of the audience the zouaves did not do their great fence scaling ct. But the most Interesting drill of all for the audieace was the drill of Captain Boyd’s “Ghosts,” which combined both the Sealy and Belknap Riles, drossed in pure white. ‘The manouvers of this command were loudly applauded. Several thousand people in carriags and & grandstand nearly full witnessed the dress parade which followed immediately after tho exhibition drilis National Assock Meeting. At n meeting of the commissioned officers in camp, held yesterday noon, the following companies belonging to the National associa- tion were reprosented: Sealy Rifles, Bel- knap Rifles, McCarthy Light Guard, Fletcher Rifles, Dallas Light Artillery, University Cadets, Lima City Guards, Governor's Guards, Cincinnati Light Artillery, Omaha Guards, Indisnapoiis Light Artillery, Deviin Cadets, Chaffee Light Artillery and the Branch Guards. President Mulford occupied the chair. A resolution barring cadet companies from military schools where there 1s a military fnstructor from the free-for-all was passed. The rules of the Omahos encampment were then adopted. Horoafter privates and non- commissioned ofticers will ba allowed to wit- ness ail drills if they so desire, Any military company is cligible to enter in the maiden class, excopt those having won 8 prize at a national drill. An important change was mado in the na tional and artillery drills, Hereafter tho program will be handed to the company com- mauder as the company marches onto the field, aua uot un hour before, as has been the custom. Another chaoge, which allows com- panies a fifteen-minutedrill before beginning the competitive drill, was made. In refillrd to the Gatling drill the rules ‘wore changed, making eight meu the mini- mum for drill. ‘The meeting then adjourned until noon today, at which time new officers will be tlected and the location for the next en- tampment chosel Program for Today. The motion was carried and duke took the chair and addressed the convention. At the conclusion of his spoech Sir W. G.
