NEWS FROM COUNCIL BLUFES | Peculinr Death of Frec Zimmer at the Pacific Houss, BELIEVED TO HAVE COMMITTED SUICIDE Finding of an Under the D iy Co Empty Laudsnum Bottie 1 Man's Window Appar. ws the General Opinton Local News Notes, Fred Zimmer, a man_apparently ahout 00 yoars of age, was found dead in room 44 at the Dacific house yestorday morning at about 10 o'clock. He has been a guest of the hotel & numbee of times during the last month, registering sometimes as from Council Bluffs and at others from Omaha. No one seemed to know, however, who he was or what business ke was in. He came to the hotel Monday night, and after he haa gono 10 his room bo showed signs of illneas. When he was asked what was the matter, he rophied that ke had besn on a big drunk, and was just getting over the effects of i1, He went again to bis room Tuesday nignt, and some of the hands about the hotel claim to have heard him groauing at different times. All efforts to awaken Zimmer failed, aud finally, at 10 o'clock a boy climbed into the room over the transom and found him lying partway on ihe bed, dead. ‘There wore indications that ho had been doad &t jeast six or eight hours, An inquest was held yesterday afternoon &t whict a little more light was thrown upon the mystery. Gcorge Drake, an old resi- aent, identitied Zimmer and said he used o live here many years ago and was engaged fn the meat market business. Later he hud a shop in Omaba, and for soy- eral yoars was in St. Joseph. He recently appcared bere again and not long since told Mr. Drake thut he was planning on buying some stock which be would slaughter and then veddle out the meat. He has been di- viding his time botween the two cities, An Omaha acqunintance smd that Zimmer recently had in his possession not only a bot- “Ale of whisky, the evidencs of which was from time lo time apparent, but also a bottlo of laudanum. This informa- tion led to a closer examination of the room where o was found dead and under the window was found an oempty laudanum bottle, 'his, with the evidence of physicians, and other circumstances, led the jury to find in its verdict that it wasa case of suicide. ‘There was not a penny found on the boay.
