The city council met last evening. A little more progress wes made in electiug officers thau at any previous meeting, ana this was made possible by the action of Alderman Jeuniogs, who left the democratic ranks long enough to vole for Alderman Van Brunt for presidont of the couneil. On the second bal- lot Van Brunt was elected by & vote of five 10 three, Goles voting for Brown and Van Bruut and Brown both passiog. Attempts were also made to elect a poll tax collector, a clerk and u street comumissioner, but the old vote of four to four resulted, and on motion further balloting was postpoued until the uext meeting, Attorney N. M. Pusey’s claim for 81,400 attoruey’s fees, which bud heen lying in the hands of the city clerk for over a year, after some discussion was referred tothe judiciary committee with instructions to report at the next meeting. W. H. M. Pusey uddressed the council with reference to the troublo he had had over his sidewalk at the corner of Broadway aua Pearl street. He wanted an amendment made 1o the ordinauces providing that no sidewnlas should te constructed on Broad- way, Main or Peurl streeis save of artificial or biatural stoue or hard burued brick, His nwendment was luid oo the table. A communication was read from Chief Nichoison of the fire department, recom- mending that the Iescue steamer be sold and a chemical enzine be purchased. It was referred.
