WAR ON DIVES, « Mayor Lawrence fins Two Disreputable Re- sorts Closed by the Police. The **Court” saloov, kept by Frank Car- roll on Lower Broadway aund the Opera House saloon, run by Mike Kildare, were closed yesterday under an order direct trom Mauyor Lawrence, Both were dives of the most disreputable kind, and the compluints that have come to the ears of the puolic every few days by rea- son of the frequent robberies and other criminal transactions that 100k place thero have led many to expect just such a move on the part of the mayor. 1t needed such an oc- currence as that of Monday morning to give the mayor the necessary public sentiment to back bim, and yesterday Lhe order was given. Before the keys bad nardly been turped in the locks the frienas cf the saloon men were on their way to the mayor's oftice, where they filled the air with wild supplications that the saloons might be reopeuned. A reporter found Mayor Lawrence leaning wearily against the door of his private oftice, trying to recover from the effects of & con- versation he bad with Carroll's sttoruey, so that be might receive another delegation of the saloonkecpers' friend: 'You would be surprised,” said he, “if I were 10 wll you the names of some of the “men who bave beex 1o me since I issued wy order and asked me to recensider. Mauy of them are my personal fricnds, aud 1 hate to refuse them any ressonable request. But there's no use talking, those places have been smelling to heaven for mooths past, and I rannot gisregard the requests of the men who have been coming 10 me continually, especially since the shooting scrape, and ask. iug me why I did not tuke some steps to pre- vent such “disreputabie joiats from runping. THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: WEDNESDAY NEWS FROM COUNCIL BLUFFS Coroner's Inquiry Tnto the Monday Morning Tragedy Oontinued. FEW NEW FACTS WERE' BROUGHT OUT Several Witne Light Ga es Examined but Very Little A —Suspicion Strong Agalust Maher—Will Catry the Inguiry to the Eud. The taking of evidence by the coroner's Jjury ovef the remaivs oi Jack Wade, the dead hack driver, was resumed yesterday morning. * James Connor, who works for Jonn C. Lee and rooms in Lee's establishment across the street from the scene of the shooting, was the first witness. He stated that he hap- pened to be awake just before the shooting and heard someone say, ‘Jack, you've been following me now for the last two years; what nave vou got to say fer yourself? and immediately two shots were fired. Whose voice uttered the speech he could not say. C. Peterson was passing the place of the shooting and Lieard loud talk. He saw the shots fired, two from one gun and one from the other, al & time when the men wero avout the width of the sidewalk from one unother. Henry Johnson, alias Stewart, C. H. Leuch, Outo Pleiffer and Dr. J. C. Water- wan wero examined, but nothing new in the v of iuformation was ovtained from them, Tom Caliaghan toid bis story substantially as it was stated in Tue Ber, During tbe quarrel betweon Wade on one side and Maher and Jones on the other, over the question of hack fare, both the latter started towards him—Callaghan—and after receiving a blow upon the head from Muter he started off up the street on 1he run, He looked back, however, and saw the two men start for ‘Wade, who backed off with his revolver pointed at them and told them to stay back or he would fire. The gun Wade had, Callaghan said, be- longed to a girl who lived at 119 Pierce street. Sho bad exhibited 1t in Wade's pres- ence shortly before the shootiug aud said sho intended to shoot ber lover with it. Wade got the gun away from her and kept it. What a Policeman Found. During the afternoon George I. Hughes, Lewis Nelsou and Ofticer A. J. Wyatt of the police force told what they knew of the af- The two former rebearsed for tue most part the stories of former witnesses, and Officer Wyatt's was the only testimony that brought to light auy new facts. He t tified that after hearing the shooting he ran 1 the direction of the crowd and finally found Jones Iying groaning at the southwest corner of Hughes' building. As he ap- proached ho heard Jones say: ‘ney've done me." Upon muking an examination he found Jones’ pistol sticking in bis back pocket with the handio protruding. 1t looked as though it had been put into his pocket hurriedly. When Jones had been taken to_the station and lay on ihe floor groaning, Maher was brought in under arrost. Whilo he was being searched Maher exhibited a great deal of nervousness, and could hardly siand up. This concluded the afternoon session, and the inguest adjourned until 2 o'clock this afternoon, when further testimony will be introduced. The coroner and county attorney, as well as the spectaters, were very anxious to have Jimmie Maher brought before the jury, believing that 1f he chose to do 50 he might give some information that might be of use 1o untangling the mystery that surrounds the case. When ho was asked by Sheriffl Hazen if he would testify, be refused 10 leave his cell, saying he would not run the risk of being strung up by going up town under any cousideration, unless the autborities should order him to do s0. Maner s strongly Suspected. Maher’'s nervousness over the possibility that he might be the chief object of interest at a necktie party has not worn off with tne novelty of his situation, and whenever any one cails on him at the jail he trembles like a leaf and shows oy his every word and action that he would be willing to trade places with almost any one that desired a change. Part of the_police are still of the opinion, as they have been fror: the start, that Maher was the one who handled Joces' gun, and that it was in his hands when the shot was fired that laia out Jack Wade Others, how- ever, believe that it was Muher who shut Jones, in spite of his violent protostations of his friendship for the injured man. C. C. Joues, a brother of W. M. Jones, and H. E. Adams, treasurer of the Sanawich Manufacturivg company, of which the in- jured man 18 Councit Bluffs manager, ai rived from Sandwich, 1L, vesterday morn- g, Mr. Adams staes ihatJones has au excellent standing with the company, and that the company will furnish ali the assis- tanco that may bo needed to run down tus assailant ana bring him to justice in case bo is still alive, Both genilemen attended ihe inquest. - ‘Wil Clear it Up. *“‘We will spare no money or trouble,” said Mr. Adams last night, “in clearing up all the mystery there is in connection with this case. This is a very busy time at the fac- tory, out I will siay here as long as neces- sary aud will use just as much mouey as is required to procure the best deiective talent, and we will not let up until we bave learned all that can be found out. Mr. Jones has been with us for many vears, all of bis business life, in fact, except two years when ho was in business for iimself. He bas been a very successful manager aud bas made asplenaid record wherever he hus been located. There is not a particle of douot in my mind, nor does his brother question the statement he has wade to his wife and re- peated to us, that he did not fire & shot from is revolver, and that he was shot after he was koocked down. We are going to know all the truth, or as much of it as is possible 1o ascertain, Mr. C. C. Jones, the cmther who is con- nected with the company 8t Sundwich, talks in the same coufident strain and declares 1hat the coroner and police officers here shall have every assistance that can be gruptea them in probing the mystery to the bottom. Missovrt VaLLey, Ia., May 3l.—[Special elegram to Tux Bee.]—Intense interest is manifested in the suaden disappearance of Supervisor Morrow of Little Sioux. A searching party of fifty men from this city together with 100 others from other towns toany searched in the rain for traces of him. Almost every foot of land within a radius of wwo miles of River Sioux bas been carefully examined. It 1s thought by some that he wusgmurdered and bis body thrown into the Little Sioux river. Others thivk he may have become demented and is now wander- ing about. Two tough characters were arrested on suspicion today at River Sioux and will be examined tomorrow. On Saturday night, the time of Morrow's disappearance, there was a round up between these two and sev- eral kindred spirits. One of them while going home made the statemsnt that they bad killed a man and would have to go to the penitentiary. The case is mysterious in the extreme from the fact that no trace or clew can be found of Morrow since he was sup- posed to have left River Sioux Saturday evening.
