8 COLLAPSE OF THE HOSPITAL Predicted Ruin of One Wing of the Build® ing Finds Early Fulfillment, ONE END OF THE BUILDING IN RUINS Close Call for the Inmates and Workmen Who Were Testing Wally= Now the South Wall Threats ens to Come Down, It is now a fact, settled beyond any ques tion of doubt, that Superintendent Tilly, tho city inspector of buildings, is cither a prophet or the son of & prophet. Thursduy hie viewed the county hospital and made tho prediction that the north wing of the structure was in an unsafe condition, liable to fall within twonty-four hours or ai any moment. The prediction was correet and now the interior of the north wing is a total wreck, the floors of tho three ¢ ors having dropped tu the basement, ing arches and partition walls with them, When Crash Came, Shortly after 10 o'clock yesterday morning Buperintendent Matoney, while at his oftice in the court house, received a teiephone mes- sago that the building had been wrocked. Commissioner Stenberg was notified and accompunicd by u Bre reporter visited the wreck, Thursday ovening the commissioners in- structed Inspector Tilly to employ an expert to ascertain what was needed to savo the building, Acting under these nstructions Contractor Dick Smith's sorvices wero secured, and to gether, at an early hour yeslerday tho two mon Journeyed 10 the hospital. “They d “the exterior walls and had tho basement, first and second had inspe Rono throug! story cornidors. Then they went fotlo tho gurret under the roof, passod along the ceuter A the north end, but on ncceunt of the lack of Jlizht, wors unablo to discover any gefects. s _nnd were met by An attend- when o mo- warning, tho not was s ment later, and without any corridor over which the men had passed not tes bofore, fell with aloud crash, garret with dust and debris, A sccond later there was another crash, as the ficor below was too weak to stand the strain, Tho Maia Floor Gave Way, The whole mass fell to the main floor, and for a moment it sustained its load, but finally broke and the whole muss of brick, mortar, wood and iron went into the buscment. ‘The corridor walls swaved back and forth, but at last thoy strongthencd up, and aronow stanaing, although bulged and tivisted outof shape, Tho men hurriedly left the building, ex- pecting that the outer walls and the roof would go next, but they stooa tno strwin, thouwh they look as though o cyclone had passed over that section of tha country. The Roof Badly Damaged, The slate roof has cracked and in somo places sunk down fuily threo feet, while the ‘walls, from the water tables w tho eaves Bave sprung out 1 places at least two feet. Wiat the damages umount to no one will approximate, but it will not fall below £100,000, as ninety feet of the center of tho wing has fallen out. luspector Tilly states that the entire wing will bave to be torn down. To do this it will bo uecessary 10 prop all of the partition walls 10 hold them from falling. Then tho outer walls wiil havo to bo braced in order to provent the roof from dropping . After this is done tho roof will have to betaken apart ana the ecntire wall pulled down brick by brick. The South Wing Also Shaky. This is not tho worst tuing that is liable to happen. ‘tne walls of the south wing have com- menced to crack and ono cruck in the ceiling of tho floor of the corridor of the south wing extends from the main_building to the south end, Whilo this work is mnot such as to causo an y alarm, it1s as large s the cracks 1 tho north wing were when tho building was visited by a BEr reporter yes- torday. An‘attempt will be made to save the south wing. Contractor Smith has been instructed to employ n force of men ana work night and day until this portion of the building is in a safo condition. o stated that ho would put iron rods throuch the building at ntervals of ten fect and if this conld be nccomplished beforo au accident occurred the structuro could bo saved. Lives of Inmates in Danger, It thesouth wing should fall without a moment's warning, 4s did the corridors of the north wing, the loss of life would be great, as tho administration rooms, the Insane aua sick wards are all in that poriion of the building. Causes of the Collupse, Tho falling of the north wing is attriouted to two causes, the first and principal being poor construction by Ryan & Walsh, tho contractors. The second cause was that for months water had run down tho cavo spouts and into the ground around the founaation walls, causing them to settle. By the settling the walls had been drawn ap leaviug nothing to support the brick arches over tho corridors. Tho falling walls nearly resulted in a panic among the inmates, but by the coolness and presonco of mind of Mrs. Mahoney se, cial sorious accidents wero prevented. Broke the Steam Pipes, L] When tho arches went down all of the stoam pipes in that portion of tho building wero broken aud great clouds of stoam hissed through the south corridor whero tho insano congregated. As this steam on- veloped them they made a wild dash for the south windows preparatory to jumping to tho ground, twenty feet below. Mrs. Malioney, although nearly frightened to death, rushed'down the corridor and was the first 'berson to reach the window. There she held them back and by hor nerve aud coolness held them at bay until the steam was shut off and until assistance arrived, s Aftor the grip Hood's Sarsaparilla will re- storo your strength and health aud oxpe every trace of poison from tho blood. - d Builders, Sealed bids will be received for the erection of atwo-story b building, Bids opened Juno 1.
